Candelario landed on the 10-day injured list with a lower-back strain Friday.

The injury which forced Candelario to exit Thursday's game will wind up ending his season prematurely. It was quite an encouraging season from him at the plate, as he hit .297/.369/.503 in 206 plate appearances. Harold Castro will be the first baseman and cleanup hitter Friday against the Royals.

Devers is not in the lineup Friday against Atlanta.

The Red Sox haven't been in the playoff race for quite some time, so they have little reason to play their best players every day. Devers sits for this contest, though there haven't been reports that he's injured, so he'll presumably return Saturday.

Riley (quadriceps) is starting at first base and batting sixth Friday against the Red Sox.

The 23-year-old sat out Thursday's lineup as a precaution due to quadriceps tightness, but he's back in action for Friday's series opener. Riley has struggled through September with a .238/.304/.357 slash line in 21 games.

Peterson is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Cardinals.

Peterson received four straight starts before taking a seat Thursday and now finds himself on the bench again for Friday's matinee. Ryan Braun starts in right field while Daniel Vogelbach serves as the designated hitter.

Senzel is starting in center field and batting seventh Friday against the Tigers, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports.

The 25-year-old had been fading into a reserve role but is now starting for the second time in the past three games. Brian Goodwin appeared to take over the primary job in center field, but he's been on the bench for the past three games, two of which were against right-handed starters. Senzel has struggled since coming off the injured list Sept. 14, going 1-for-18 with three strikeouts.

Bregman went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run, an RBI triple, a double and another run scored during Thursday's win over the Rangers.

Bregman had a hot night at the plate, starting things off with an RBI triple against Lance Lynn in the first inning, then cranking a two-run home run in the fifth. The 26-year-old then tacked on a double in the sixth, falling just a single shy of the cycle. Bregman now has five long balls this season to go with a .254/.361/.458 slash line.

Candelario left Thursday's game against the Royals with lower-back tightness and is considered day-to-day.

Jorge Bonifacio entered the game in left field with Brandon Dixon shifting to first base. Candelario will look to make it back in the lineup at some point during the regular season's closing weekend.

Rivera underwent surgery on his elbow, Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Per Wilson, the procedure was similar to Tommy John surgery, but involved using an artificial brace rather than a human tendon. Fellow Ranger Danny Santana had the same surgery Sept. 9 and is expected to take eight months to recover, so a similar timeline could be in store for Rivera.

Peterson is not in Thursday's lineup against the Cardinals.

He had started four games in a row prior to this contest and is hitting .194 with two home runs and one steal in 36 at-bats this month. Tyrone Taylor will start in right field and bat sixth.

Riley is dealing with some minor quadriceps tightness, but he could have played Thursday, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.

This explains why Riley is on the bench for the second day in a row. While the team says he was fine to play Thursday, that doesn't necessarily mean he will be back in action Friday. Adeiny Hechavarria is starting at third base in his stead.
