Reds' Nick Senzel: Cleared to return

Senzel (illness) announced on his personal Twitter page Wednesday that he'd been cleared to return to the field.

Seznel and teammate Mike Moustakas had been out of action for the past few days due to an illness, but neither player ever tested positive for COVID-19. They had to appeal a panel of league and union representatives to be allowed back on the field, but they've evidently been successful, so both could return to the lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Cubs.

  • Kevin Newman 3B | LAA

Pirates' Kevin Newman: Not in Wednesday's lineup

Newman is not starting Wednesday against the Brewers.

Newman sits for the second time in the season's first six games, meaning he seemingly has less than a true everyday role in Pittsburgh at the moment. He's done very little at the plate thus far this season, grabbing just a single hit in 16 at-bats. Erik Gonzalez will make his second start of the year as the shortstop in his absence.

Reds' Nick Senzel: Appealing COVID-19 protocols

Senzel and teammate Mike Moustakas plan to appeal to a select panel of league and union representatives Wednesday regarding their MLB-mandated absences as a result of their self-reported COVID-19 symptoms, C. Trent Rosecrans and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report.

Though both players have been held out of action since reporting their symptoms, neither has received a positive result on multiple COVID-19 tests, leading both to believe they should be eligible to play for the Reds. Senzel's and Moustakas' teammate, Nick Castellanos, relayed after Tuesday's game against the Cubs that both are unable to play until Thursday due to the current protocols in place, but a favorable ruling by the league and union committee Wednesday could expedite their returns.

Reds' Mike Moustakas: Appealing COVID-19 protocols

Moustakas and teammate Nick Senzel plan to appeal to a select panel of league and union representatives Wednesday regarding their MLB-mandated absences as a result of their self-reported COVID-19 symptoms, C. Trent Rosecrans and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic report.

  • J.D. Davis 1B | LAA

Mets' J.D. Davis: Swats first homer

Davis went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 8-3 win over the Red Sox.

He took an Austin Brice offering the other way and clanked it off Pesky's Pole for his first homer, and first RBI, of the season. Davis came into the game with just two hits, both singles, in his first 13 at-bats, but as the 27-year-old showed last season, he can heat up in a hurry.

  • Mike Moustakas 3B | CHW

Reds' Mike Moustakas: Unavailable until Thursday

Teammate Nick Castellanos said after Tuesday's game that Moustakas is testing negative for COVID-19 but can't play until at least Thursday, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Moustakas was placed on the COVID-19 injured list Sunday after waking up not feeling well, but he was apparently only showing similar symptoms to coronavirus and has tested negative. It's unclear if the Reds expect the 31-year-old to be ready to play Thursday, but that's apparently the front end of his return timeline.

  • Nick Senzel 3B | LAD

Reds' Nick Senzel: Not available until Thursday

Senzel (illness) tested negative for COVID-19 but won't be cleared to play until at least Thursday, teammate Nick Castellanos said after Tuesday's game, John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Senzel hasn't seen game action since Saturday as he has been feeling under the weather, but he's thankfully tested negative for COVID-19 to this point. It's unclear if the team expects the 25-year-old to be fully cleared for Thursday, but it's apparently the earliest he might be able to take the field.

  • Austin Riley 3B | ATL

Braves' Austin Riley: Absent from lineup Tuesday

Riley isn't in the lineup Tuesday against the Rays.

Riley went 2-for-14 with a solo home run and five strikeouts as he started in each of the first four games of the season for Atlanta. However, he'll take a seat as Johan Camargo gets the nod at the hot corner Tuesday, batting seventh.

  • Brian Anderson RF | ATL

    Marlins' Brian Anderson: Schedule paused

Anderson and the rest of his teammates won't play again for the rest of the week due to the team's COVID-19 outbreak, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Roughly half of the Marlins' roster has tested positive for the virus. It's not clear whether or not Anderson is part of that group, but all of the team's games through Sunday have been postponed, so he won't be taking the field even if healthy. Miami's next scheduled game is set for Tuesday against the Phillies.

  • Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Makes first start

Vargas started at first base and went 1-for-4 in Monday's 6-2 loss to San Diego.

This was Vargas' third appearance and first start of the season. All three appearances have come at first base. Prior to 2020, Vargas played mostly middle infield and some third base, but a productive summer camp has manager Torey Lovullo looking to get him in the lineup wherever possible. Vargas is 2-for-7 with a run scored in 2020.
