Tigers' Gio Urshela: Day off Friday

Urshela isn't in the Tigers' lineup for Friday's game against Arizona, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.

Urshela has gone 0-for-6 since returning from the injured list Tuesday, and he'll get a chance to clear his head Friday. Matt Vierling will fill the open spot at third base and bat fifth.

  • Ehire Adrianza 3B | LAA

Angels' Ehire Adrianza: Receives injection in back

Adrianza received an injection in his back Thursday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

The injection was issued to relieve back spasms that caused Adrianza to land on the 10-day injured list May 9. Before being placed on the IL, Adrianza was 5-for-26 with one home run and two RBI in eight games.

  • Bryan Ramos 3B | BAL

White Sox's Bryan Ramos: Placed on injured list

Ramos was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday by the White Sox due to a left quadriceps strain.

Ramos exited the first game of the White Sox's Tuesday doubleheader due to tightness in his quadricep, and he will now be out for at least another eight days due to the injury. The rookie infielder is slashing .281/.294/.344 through his first 10 big-league games.

  • Danny Mendick 3B | CHW

White Sox's Danny Mendick: Activated from IL

Mendick (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Mendick was placed on the injured list in early May with back soreness and only needed two rehab starts before being activated. During those two Triple-A games, Mendick went 0-for-8 with two walks and a run scored. He'll replace Braden Shewmake on the big-league roster and could see immediate action at third base with Bryan Ramos also headed to the 10-day IL with a strained left quad.

  • Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Clubs another homer

Devers went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored during Thursday's 7-5 loss to the Rays.

Devers took righty Zack Littell yard for a solo homer in the second inning, marking the third baseman's second straight game with a long ball. All six of Devers' homers this season have come off right-handers, and he boasts a .302/.394/.593 slash line against opposite-handed pitching.

  • Niko Goodrum 2B | SD

Angels' Niko Goodrum: Sent to Triple-A

The Angels optioned Goodrum to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday.

Goodrum was claimed off waivers from Tampa Bay last Thursday, and he went 0-for-13 in four games with the Angels. He will now return to the minors, making room for Luis Rengifo's (illness) return from the injured list. It's possible Goodrum returns later this year if the Angels continue to struggle with infield depth, but he has proven to be an offensive liability throughout his seven-year career in MLB.

  • DJ LeMahieu 2B | NYY

Yankees' DJ LeMahieu: Rehab assignment on tap Friday

LeMahieu (foot) is in line to begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset on Friday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.

LeMahieu has already joined Somerset, but he will first go through a full workout Thursday and, assuming that goes off without a hitch, will begin playing in games Friday. The veteran infielder had to have his initial rehab assignment last month halted after just one inning due to ongoing issues with his right foot, but he's now ready to try again. Since he's missed so much time, the expectation is that LeMahieu will probably need at least a handful of rehab games before rejoining the Yankees' active roster.

  • Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera: Heading to bench Thursday

Cabrera is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Twins.

Cabrera has been the Yankees' preferred option at third base all season, but he's started to cede more work of late to Jon Berti, who will occupy the hot corner for the fourth time in six games Thursday. Given that he holds a 129-point advantage in OPS over Berti for the season, Cabrera should still be the favored option more often than not, but both will see their opportunities take a hit once DJ LeMahieu (foot) eventually returns from the injured list to make his 2024 debut.

  • Jose Miranda 3B | MIN

Twins' Jose Miranda: Takes seat Thursday

Miranda is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Yankees.

Miranda had started at third base in seven of the previous eight contests, but he'll cede the hot corner to Willi Castro in the series finale. Though Miranda has posted an .832 OPS over his last 15 games, his opportunities could soon take a hit with Byron Buxton (knee) having kicked off a rehab assignment and potentially returning from the 10-day injured list as soon as this weekend. Castro has been serving as Buxton's primary replacement in the outfield, but Castro will likely see more time at third base at Miranda's expense once Buxton is activated.

  • Red Sox's Rafael Devers: Clubs homer in loss

Devers went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Wednesday in a loss to the Rays.

Devers' sixth-inning solo shot brought Boston to within a run, but it ended up being the final tally for either team. The long ball extended the third baseman's on-base streak to nine contests, and he's hitting .270 with two homers, five RBI and five runs over that stretch. On a less positive note, Devers has struck out at least once in 12 straight games, and his 24.1 percent strikeout rate is on pace to be his worst mark since the abbreviated 2020 campaign.
