Yankees' Gleyber Torres: No hits in return

Torres went 0-for-4 in Friday's 4-3 extra-innings win over Baltimore.

Torres missed nearly a month with a sprained left thumb, and he showed a little rust at the plate with his 0-fer performance. Prior to the injury, he had hit safely in 17 of 22 games coming out of the All-Star break, posting a .300/.337/.500 slash line in that span. He should take over as the Yankees' everyday shortstop going forward.

  • Zack Short 3B | DET

Tigers' Zack Short: Optioned to Triple-A

Short was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on Friday.

Short didn't start any of the last three games, but he should receive more consistent at-bats in the minors. The 26-year-old had slashed just .111/.150/.222 with three home runs, 10 RBI, nine runs and a stolen base in 38 games since the All-Star break.

  • Andres Gimenez SS | TOR

Indians' Andres Gimenez: Swipes bag in loss

Gimenez went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 8-5 loss to Boston.

The infielder recorded his first multi-hit effort in 18 games since he was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Aug. 7. Gimenez has notched four steals in that span, but he's just 10-for-46 (.217) at the plate. He's added two home runs, seven RBI, eight stolen bases and 14 runs scored through 141 plate appearances overall.

  • Jonathan Arauz 3B | LAD

Red Sox's Jonathan Arauz: Smacks homer Friday

Arauz went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double and two total runs scored in Friday's 8-5 win over Cleveland.

The infielder started at shortstop with Xander Bogaerts (COVID-19) unavailable. In the fourth inning, Arauz took Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill deep. The homer snapped an 0-for-13 skid at the plate for Arauz, who is now slashing .188/.304/.354 with a pair of homers, six RBI, seven runs scored and two doubles through 56 plate appearances. He'll likely see regular playing time until Boston gets some of its ailing infielders off the COVID-19 list.

  • Jorge Polanco 1B | NYM

Twins' Jorge Polanco: Knocks 25th homer

Polanco went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in Friday's 5-3 loss to the Rays.

Polanco got the Twins on the board early with his solo shot off Michael Wacha in the first inning. He later knocked an RBI double in the eighth. It was his first homer since going deep in three straight games from Aug. 23-25 and he's gone 21-for-63 (.333) with nine extra-base hits over his last 15 games. Polanco is slashing .276/.334/.498 with 80 RBI through 125 games.

  • Elvis Andrus 2B | ARI

Athletics' Elvis Andrus: Multi-hit effort in victory

Andrus went 2-for-4 with a run in a win over the Tigers on Thursday.

Andrus has now hit safely in five of his last seven games, and he's struck out a minuscule 7.4 percent of the time during that stretch. With a modest 26 extra-base hits in 473 plate appearances, Andrus currently sports his lowest figure in the former category since the 2013 season. However, his .230 average and .276 on-base percentage, while certainly pedestrian, are still a notable improvement on the respective .194 and .252 figures he produced in those categories with the Rangers in 2020.

  • Red Sox's Enrique Hernandez: Could return early next week

Hernandez could return from the COVID-19 list early next week, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.

The 30-year-old has been inactive since August 26 but manager Alex Cora is hoping he will return sooner rather than later. Hernandez is one of a number of players the Red Sox expect to be reinstated from the COVID list in the coming week, including Xander Bogaerts and Christian Arroyo.

  • Gleyber Torres 2B | DET

    Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Starting Friday

Torres is starting Friday versus the Orioles.

The shortstop was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday following a thumb injury. He's batting seventh as the Yankees face the Orioles ace John Means.

  • Gleyber Torres 2B | DET

Yankees' Gleyber Torres: Returns from injured list

Torres (thumb) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday.

Torres has been sidelined for nearly a month by a sprained left thumb, but he'll rejoin the big-league club after a three-game rehab stint with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 24-year-old exited Thursday's rehab game after being hit by a pitch on the left hand, though his removal was apparently precautionary since he's still returning from the injured list Friday as scheduled.

  • Owen Miller 2B | CHC

Indians' Owen Miller: Launches three-run homer

Miller went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Thursday's win over the Royals.

Miller blasted a three-run bomb off Mike Minor in the fifth inning, and that was all Cleveland would need to grab the lead and never look back. The infielder has homered in two of his last four contests and has gone 5-for-17 (.294) in that span.
