Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Beginning assignment over weekend

Rizzo (forearm) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset during the weekend, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.

Rizzo will serve as a designated hitter for the first several games of his assignment before eventually moving back to first base. The Yankees haven't said how long the 35-year-old will remain in the minors, though he figures to return to New York sometime in early September.

Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Closing in on rehab assignment

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that the team has discussed sending Rizzo (forearm) out on a rehab assignment, though no decision has been reached as to when it would begin, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

Rizzo would serve as a designated hitter initially on the rehab assignment before eventually playing time first base. The 35-year-old has been on the injured list since mid-June with a fractured right forearm and is likely trending toward an early September return.

  • Matthew Batten 3B | ATL

Padres' Matthew Batten: Sent down to minors

The Padres optioned Batten to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Batten's latest stint in the big league lasted just one day and he did not see any action. His roster spot will be filled by infielder Mason McCoy, who was called up from Triple-A.

  • Juan Yepez 1B | TOR

Nationals' Juan Yepez: Sitting amid rough patch

Yepez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Yepez will head to the bench for the second time in three games while he's gone just 2-for-26 at the dish over his last eight contests, bringing his slash line down to .279/.331/.422 over 163 plate appearances since getting a call-up to Washington on July 4. His recent struggles could cost him a regular spot in the lineup against right-handed pitching, as Joey Gallo looms as a potential alternative following his return from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Gallo will fill in for Yepez at first base in Wednesday's contest.

  • Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero: Second straight start at third base

Guerrero will start at third base and bat third in Wednesday's contest versus the Reds.

Guerrero will pick up a second start in a row and the eighth start this season at the hot corner, despite having not previously made any starts at the position since his 2019 rookie campaign. The 25-year-old has already picked up third-base eligibility on some fantasy platforms, and getting to the 20-game threshold before the end of this season would mean he would have eligibility at the position in just about every format heading into 2025.

  • LaMonte Wade 1B | CHW

Giants' LaMonte Wade: Sitting against lefty

Wade is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

With the White Sox sending southpaw Garrett Crochet to the bump, the lefty-hitting Wade will give way to the right-handed-hitting Mark Canha at first base in the series finale. Of Wade's 296 plate appearances on the season, only 34 have come against left-handed pitching.

  • Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY

Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Takes swings Tuesday

Rizzo (forearm) batted in a simulated game against Yankees reliever Ian Hamilton on Tuesday, but the first baseman's return timeline is still undetermined, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.

That Rizzo was able to take swings against Hamilton -- who threw his full arsenal of pitches -- is a positive sign that his forearm fracture is healing well, but manager Aaron Boone indicated that the team still wants Rizzo to heal further before sending him off on a rehab assignment. The veteran slugger has been out since mid-June and isn't likely to return to New York's lineup until some time in September.

  • Pirates' Rowdy Tellez: Idle against southpaw

Tellez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rangers.

For the second day in a row, the lefty-hitting Tellez finds himself on the bench while the Rangers send another southpaw (Andrew Heaney) to the bump. Connor Joe will fill in for Tellez at first base.

  • Zach Dezenzo SS | HOU

Astros' Zach Dezenzo: Playing time dwindling

Dezenzo is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Red Sox, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

It's the third straight game on the bench for Dezenzo, who has started just three of the last nine games and just one of the last seven against right-handed pitching. Yainer Diaz will play first base in Wednesday's series finale, while Victor Caratini will do the catching.

  • Astros' Jon Singleton: Goes yard in loss

Singleton went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 6-5 loss to the Red Sox.

Singleton's blast helped the Astros erase a three-run deficit in the first inning. That was his lone successful moment Tuesday, as he struck out in his other three at-bats. The first baseman has gone 9-for-32 (.281) in August, but he's been losing playing time to a combination of Zach Dezenzo and Yainer Diaz over the last week. Once Alex Bregman (elbow) returns, Shay Whitcomb may also enter the mix at first base, further impacting Singleton's role. For the season, Singleton is slashing .235/.315/.371 with 11 homers, 33 RBI, 40 runs scored and seven doubles over 96 contests.
