Wade joined Houston on a one-year contract Thursday and went 0-for-4 in his season debut that evening. The veteran outfielder turned in a much more impactful performance in his second contest with his new club, with his big hits being a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run double in the fifth. Wade seems likely to get occasional starts in left field with the Astros, though he'll probably need to string together an extended productive run to get a chance at seeing regular playing time.

Wade had attended spring training with the White Sox, but he was cut loose before the end of camp after being informed that he wouldn't be included on the Opening Day roster. The 32-year-old first baseman re-signed with Chicago on a new minor-league deal shortly thereafter but was unable to earn a promotion despite slashing .250/.420/.441 with seven home runs over 201 plate appearances at Triple-A Charlotte. Wade shouldn't have much trouble securing a new contract in free agency, though his lack of defensive flexibility could result in him having to settle for another minor-league deal.

Wade felt apart in 2025, finishing with a lowly .167/.271/.254 batting line across 80 games between the Giants and Angels. He was a career .246/.351/.411 hitter prior to that and is just 32 years of age, so it's reasonable to think he could rebound in 2026. Wade has primarily played first base the last few years but also has plenty of outfield experience, and Chicago's outfield is wide open for playing time.

Wade was designated for assignment by the Giants on Tuesday after posting a disappointing .167 average with one home run and 35 strikeouts over 144 at-bats in 50 games with the team this year. The lefty bat has proven to be more than serviceable in the past, producing a .258 average with 25 long balls, 79 RBI, 109 runs scored and four stolen bases over 760 at-bats between 2023 and 2024 with San Francisco. Wade will now look to emulate those numbers with the Angels, though it's unclear if he'll report to their major-league roster or head to Triple-A Salt Lake.
