  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: Opts to avoid surgery

Cabrera (hamstring) will not have surgery, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

The Diamondbacks will evaluate Cabrera weekly to get a sense of where he's at in the recovery process. In opting for the conservative route, Cabrera is choosing a lengthier rehab. His timetable for a return is weeks, if not months.

  • Yuli Gurriel DH | SD

Astros' Yuli Gurriel: Drives in four

Gurriel went 4-for-5 with four RBI, one run scored and two doubles Wednesday against the Athletics.

Gurriel delivered two big hits in the contest, the first a two-RBI double in the seventh inning. He followed that up with another two-run double in the following frame, which helped provide Houston with plenty of insurance runs. Gurriel continues to hit very well and has maintained a.338/.408/.576 slash line with seven home runs, 22 runs scored and 36 RBI across 41 games.

  • Pete Alonso 1B | BAL

Mets' Pete Alonso: Nursing wrist injury

Alonso is dealing with soreness in his left wrist and had X-rays come back negative Wednesday, Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News reports.

It appeared to be a standard off day for the 26-year-old -- his first of the season -- but it turns out he's actually managing an injury. The issue apparently first surfaced when he was hit by a pitch by the Cardinals on May 5. Alonso will have Thursday's scheduled off day to be evaluated without missing another game, and he's expected to undergo an MRI.

  • Pete Alonso 1B | BAL

Mets' Pete Alonso: Receives first day off

Alonso is out of the lineup Wednesday against Atlanta, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Alonso has started all 36 games at first base this season but will take a seat Wednesday while mired in a 4-for-35 slump. Dominic Smith will shift to first base while Cameron Maybin starts in left field for the Mets.

  • P.J. Higgins C | CIN

Cubs' P.J. Higgins: Contract selected by Cubs

Higgins' contract was selected by the Cubs on Wednesday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Higgins began the 2021 campaign with Triple-A Iowa and slashed .333/.458/.513 with a home run, seven runs and six RBI in 11 games. He'll now serve as the backup to Willson Contreras after Tony Wolters was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Wilmer Flores: Placed on injured list

Flores was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Flores suffered a hamstring injury while running the bases in Tuesday's game against the Reds. Though Flores was sent in for an MRI, the Giants don't believe he'll be due for an extended absence, as manager Gabe Kapler told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle that the 29-year-old was diagnosed with a minor strain. Donovan Solano (calf) was reinstated from the injured list in a corresponding move, and he should take over as the Giants' primary second baseman while both Flores and Tommy La Stella (hamstring) are on the IL.

  • Donovan Solano 1B | TEX

Giants' Donovan Solano: Reinstated from injured list

Solano (calf) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Wednesday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.

Solano missed nearly a month due to a right calf strain and had joined Triple-A Sacramento for a brief rehab assignment recently. However, he'll now rejoin the major-league club after Wilmer Flores (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. While both Flores and Tommy La Stella (hamstring) are on the IL, Solano should have a clear path to an everyday role at second base.

  • Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY

Cubs' Anthony Rizzo: Not starting Wednesday

Rizzo (back) isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Nationals.

Rizzo was removed from Tuesday's win over Washington as a precautionary measure due to tightness in his lower back. He's currently considered day-to-day but could be available off the bench if needed Wednesday, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Kris Bryant will take over at first base while David Bote starts at the hot corner.

  • Alex Kirilloff LF | MIN

Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Rehab assignment imminent

Kirilloff (wrist) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Kirilloff will serve as the designated hitter Wednesday but could play in the outfield Thursday if all goes well. Manager Rocco Baldelli said that Kirilloff could only need a few days before returning to the majors, and he indicated that the outfielder could be activated during the Twins' weekend series in Cleveland. Kirilloff has been on the injured list since May 5 due to a right wrist sprain.

  • Keston Hiura 2B | LAD

Brewers' Keston Hiura: Stacking up doubles at Triple-A

Hiura is 7-for-20 (.350) with five doubles, two RBI, a steal and a 2:8 BB:K through five games with Triple-A Nashville.

Hiura got some time to tend to personal matters after being sent down by the Brewers early this month, but he joined the team's Triple-A affiliate last week and has been playing regularly since. He is stacking up doubles and hitting far better than he did at the big-league level, but he is still striking out quite a bit, and the Brewers are likely hoping to see some improvement in that area before bringing him back to the big-league club.
