  • Diamondbacks' Ildemaro Vargas: Takes over at shortstop

Vargas started at shortstop and went 0-for-3 in Tuesday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies.

Vargas filled in for the injured Geraldo Perdomo (knee). Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said prior to the game that Perdomo could be available off the bench -- he didn't play in the loss -- and implied the injury is not serious, per Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports. Vargas, who has career highs in games played (105) and plate appearances (364) this season, has slipped back into a utility role off the bench and recently lost playing time at first base to Tim Tawa.

  • Pete Alonso 1B | BAL

Orioles' Pete Alonso: Stays hot in win

Alonso went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Twins.

Alonso opened the scoring with a 418-foot blast off Bailey Ober in the first inning. The first baseman has now tallied eight hits over his past four games, going deep three times and driving in six runs during that stretch. For the year, he's slashing .256/.350/.479 with 26 homers, 77 RBI, 73 runs scored and five steals across 520 plate appearances.

  • Matt Olson 1B | ATL

Braves' Matt Olson: Crushes two-run homer Tuesday

Olson went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run and an additional run scored during Atlanta's 4-0 win over the Mets on Tuesday.

Olson doubled Atlanta's lead in the eighth inning when he took Chayce McDermott deep to right field for a 423-foot, two-run homer. It continues a hot stretch at the plate for Olson, who has eight long balls over his last 14 games and is up 35 home runs on the year. Not only is that now tied with Kyle Schwarber and Yordan Alvarez for most in the majors, but it is the third time in Olson's big-league career that he's recorded at least 35 homers in a season. Olson also ranks fourth in the majors this season in slugging percentage (.554) and ninth in OPS (.897) over 525 plate appearances.

  • Nick Kurtz 1B | ATH

Athletics' Nick Kurtz: May not return this season

Kurtz (thumb) is set to spend three more weeks in a brace after receiving a platelet-rich plasma injection last Tuesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Kurtz received the injection when he initially landed on the injured list last week with a strained right thumb. He's scheduled to shed his brace at the beginning of September, but with the 47-72 A's well out of the race for a postseason berth, the team likely won't be in much of a hurry to bring him back. If the Athletics opt to shut Kurtz down for the year, Jeff McNeil and Tommy White figure to split reps at first base for the rest of the season.

  • Andrew Vaughn 1B | MIL

    Brewers' Andrew Vaughn: Idle Tuesday

Vaughn is absent from the lineup for Tuesday's matchup with San Diego.

Vaughn went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Monday's series opener and will now sit out Tuesday. Jake Bauers will man first base and cleanup, while Christian Yelich will act as the designated hitter and bat sixth for Milwaukee.

  • Josh Naylor 1B | SEA

Mariners' Josh Naylor: Out of lineup with wrist soreness

Naylor is out of the lineup Tuesday against the Yankees due to right wrist soreness, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Naylor tweaked the wrist on a swing during the Mariners' previous homestand and will get the night off Tuesday versus Yankees lefty Ryan Weathers. Weston Wilson is starting at first base and batting eighth for Seattle. Since the All-Star break, Naylor is slashing .312/.376/.455 with five doubles, two homers, six RBI, nine runs scored, five stolen bases and a 7:10 BB:K across 85 plate appearances.

  • Jared Young 1B | NYM

Mets' Jared Young: Absent from lineup Tuesday

Young is not in Tuesday's lineup against Atlanta.

Despite going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored during Monday's series opener, Young will ride the pine Tuesday. Gabriel Arias will make his first start at first base and bat ninth for the Mets.

  • Michael Toglia 1B | CIN

Reds' Michael Toglia: Joins big-league club

The Reds selected Toglia's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.

Toglia has spent the entire season at Louisville, where he slashed .273/.373/.547 with 22 homers, 65 RBI, 49 runs scored, four stolen bases and a 56:103 BB:K across 402 trips to the plate. The switch-hitting Toglia possesses plus power but owns an inflated 35.0 percent strikeout rate spanning 1,067 big-league plate appearances. He has the ability to play first base and right field and will likely see some at-bats at designated hitter.

  • Josh Naylor 1B | SEA

    Mariners' Josh Naylor: Idle Tuesday

Naylor is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Yankees.

With southpaw Ryan Weathers toeing the slab for the Yankees, the left-handed hitting Naylor will sit out Tuesday's series opener. Weston Wilson will start at first base and bat eighth for Seattle.

  • Kyle Stowers 1B | MIA

Marlins' Kyle Stowers: Heading to injured list

Miami placed Stowers on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain on Tuesday.

Stowers exited Sunday's series finale early against the Angels with discomfort in his left hamstring, and the injury proved serious enough to warrant a trip to the injured list. The 28-year-old will be sidelined for at least 10 days for the second time this season, after also missing the first three weeks-plus of the campaign due to a right hamstring strain. The left-handed-hitting Stowers has batted .242/.327/.462 with 16 home runs and 52 RBI in 399 plate appearances this season. Miami recalled Graham Pauley from Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.
