Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Slugs solo homer
Goldschmidt went 2-for-8 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 19-inning loss to the Diamondbacks.
Goldschmidt launched a 405-foot shot to left center field in the 13th inning to give the Cardinals a short-lived lead. The 32-year-old has gone deep 33 times this year while driving in 95 runs; however, his first season in St. Louis has been a mild disappointment, as both his batting average (.259) and stolen-base total (two) are well below his career norms.

Freddie Freeman 1B | LAD
Braves' Freddie Freeman: Trending toward return Friday
Freeman (elbow) is trending toward rejoining the starting lineup Friday against the Mets, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports. "It's been very, very positive so far, so I've got a feeling when he shows up on Friday he's going to be really good to go," manager Brian Snitker said.
Freeman is in Atlanta receiving treatment on his bothersome right elbow, which has been causing him discomfort in recent weeks thanks to a bone spur. The first baseman is apparently feeling much better following a couple days of rest and rehab, suggesting he could be ready to return to action when he meets up with the Braves in New York later in the week. Austin Riley and Francisco Cervelli are candidates to see time at first base while Freeman remains sidelined.

Rhys Hoskins 1B | CLE
Phillies' Rhys Hoskins: Rested for nightcap
Hoskins won't start the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Nationals, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
Hoskins went 0-for-3 with a walk in the afternoon contest. The Phillies' loss in that game eliminated them from playoff contention, so Hoskins will sit in favor of Logan Morrison for the nightcap.

Wilmer Flores 1B | SF
Diamondbacks' Wilmer Flores: Sits again Tuesday
Flores remains on the bench Tuesday against the Cardinals.
Flores finds himself on the bench for the second straight game. Domingo Leyba gets the start at second base in his absence.

Christian Walker 1B | HOU
Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Heads to bench
Walker will not be in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cardinals.
Walker has gone 9-for-20 with a pair of homers over his last six games. Jake Lamb will get the start at first base in his absence.

Asdrubal Cabrera 1B | CIN
Nationals' Asdrubal Cabrera: Sits for early game
Cabrera will sit for the first half of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Phillies.
Cabrera returned from a brief absence with a sore ankle Monday but won't be asked to start both games Tuesday. Brian Dozier starts at second base in his absence.

Christian Walker 1B | HOU
Diamondbacks' Christian Walker: Smacks 27th homer
Walker went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in a 9-7 defeat for the Diamondbacks against the Cardinals on Monday.
It was the 27th homer of the year for Walker, who cranked a fourth-inning solo shot off Adam Wainwright. It's been a streaky season for the 28-year-old, but his overall numbers are solid, to the tune of a .261/.346/.471 slash line across 147 games.

Paul Goldschmidt 1B | NYY
Cardinals' Paul Goldschmidt: Blasts 32nd homer in win
Goldschmidt went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, three runs scored and a walk in the Cardinals' 9-7 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday.
Making his return to Arizona for the first time as a member of the Cardinals, it looked like old times for Goldschmidt, who tagged Alex Young with a two-run blast in the fifth inning and scored three of his team's nine runs. He hasn't quite lived up the lofty standards he set during his tenure in Arizona in his debut campaign with St. Louis, but Goldschmidt has still managed respectable numbers overall, posting a .260/.348/.474 slash line with 32 homers and 94 RBI in 156 games.

Dominic Smith 1B | ATL
Mets' Dominic Smith: Faces live pitching
Smith (foot) hit against live pitching Monday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Smith hadn't faced live pitching since suffering a stress fracture in his foot in late July. He'll be eligible to return Wednesday and appears to have a chance to do so if a follow-up CT scan that day yields good news. The Mets may want him to make a handful of at-bats over the final few games even if they're eliminated from playoff contention by that point.
