  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Practices Saturday

Rourke (ribs) was a full participant in Saturday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Rourke was hospitalized during Thursday night's preseason opener against the Titans due to shortness of breath caused by a rib injury. The quarterback's return to practice just two days after the issue is a strong sign that he is past the issue and set to back up Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. Rourke will likely see significant snaps in next Thursday's preseason showdown with the Chargers.

  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Leaves hospital Thursday

Rourke (ribs) was discharged from the hospital Thursday night, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Rourke left Thursday night's preseason opener against the Titans with shortness of breath due to a rib injury. The quarterback's next chance to get preseason reps will be in next Thursday's contest against the Chargers. Rourke is competing with Adrian Martinez for the No. 3 quarterback role behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. Healthy preseason snaps will be a must for the 2025 seventh-rounder as he tries to remain on the 49ers' 53-man roster in consecutive seasons.

  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Done for night with ribs injury

Rourke (ribs) will not return to Thursday night's preseason opener against the Titans, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Rourke completed 12 of 14 passes for 101 scoreless yards before suffering a rib injury, allowing Adrian Martinez to come in to finish out the exhibition opener. Rourke also rushed three times for 14 yards prior to his departure. The second-year quarterback's next chance to suit up will be next Thursday against the Chargers.

  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Questionable to return Thursday

Rourke (ribs) is questionable to return to Thursday night's preseason contest against the Titans, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Rourke suffered an injury to his ribs in the first half, and his status for the remainder of the game is now up in the air. The second-year pro is competing with Adrian Martinez for the No. 3 quarterback role with San Francisco this season, and his chances to beat out Martinez would take a major hit if the injury sidelines him moving forward.

  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Officially out for 2025

Rourke (knee) will remain on the 49ers' reserve/non-football injury list for the rest of the 2025 season, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Rourke opened the 2025 regular season on the NFI list while recovering from a torn ACL that he sustained during his final collegiate season at Indiana. He was designated to return from the NFI in early December, but with his 21-day practice window closing, the rookie seventh-rounder will not be available for the rest of the 2025 campaign. Rourke will turn his attention toward being available for the start of the 2026 season, when he'll likely compete for the backup quarterback job behind Brock Purdy.

  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Won't return Week 17

Rourke (knee) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against Chicago, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Rourke is in the final stages of his recovery from a torn ACL that he suffered during his final collegiate season at Indiana. He's not quite ready to return, but given his 21-day practice window opened Dec. 8, he would need to be activated from the NFI list ahead of the 49ers' Week 18 tilt against the Seahawks. If Rourke is not activated, then he would not be available for the 49ers' regular-season finale or their postseason run.

  • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Practice window opened

Rourke (knee) had his 21-day practice window opened Monday by the 49ers. Rourke has been sidelined since late August while on the reserve/non-football injury list with a pre-existing knee injury from his final college campaign with Indiana. • 49ers' Kurtis Rourke: Shifts to NFI list

Rourke (knee) was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list Tuesday. Rourke played his entire final season at Indiana on a torn ACL but managed to throw for 3,042 yards, 29 touchdowns and five interceptions through 12 games, vaulting the Hoosiers to the College Football Playoff. He underwent surgery Jan. 8 and was subsequently drafted in the seventh round by the 49ers. Due to his recovery, he didn't participate in rookie camp or training camp, and he'll be required to miss at least four games due to his placement on the NFI list. The 49ers can take their time with his recovery as long as Brock Purdy and Mac Jones (knee) are upright, as Rourke projects for the No. 3 role upon return.
