  • Lions' Christian Izien: Inks deal with Detroit

Izien signed a contract with the Lions on Friday. The terms of the deal are yet to be announced, but Izien will head to Detroit after calling Tampa Bay his home for the last three seasons. He played a prominent role in the Buccaneers' defense in 2023 and 2024 but saw his snaps on defense dip in 2025, finishing with 25 tackles (16 solo) and one forced fumble across 14 regular-season games. Izien will look to earn an expanded role on defense with the Lions, and he could get some starts early in 2026 season if one or both of Brian Branch (Achilles) and Kerby Joseph (knee) are not available.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Not tendered by Tampa Bay

The Bucs will not extend a restricted free agent tender to Izien prior to the start of the new league year next Wednesday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. Izien, therefore, will be allowed to become an unrestricted free agent. The 25-year-old has appeared in 45 regular-season games for the Bucs over the last three seasons, logging 165 tackles (111 solo), five pass breakups, including three interceptions, and three forced fumbles.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Logs eight tackles vs. Falcons

Izien posted eight total tackles (four solo) and one forced fumble in Thursday's 29-28 loss to Falcons. After playing just 35 defensive snaps over 10 appearances prior to Thursday's loss, Izien was on the field for all 66 of Tampa Bay's defensive plays. The Rutgers product tied Lavonte David for the second-most tackles on the team and stripped Bijan Robinson in the third quarter, leading to a Buccaneers touchdown. He may have earned an expanded role on Tampa Bay's defense going forward, but he's still expected to back up Tykee Smith (neck) once the latter returns from injury.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Limited in Tuesday's walkthrough

Izien (neck) was a limited participant in Tuesday's walkthrough practice. Izien didn't participate in Monday's walkthrough practice due to a neck injury, but he was cleared to work in at least a limited capacity during Tuesday's session. He would avoid an injury designation for Thursday night's game against the Falcons if he were to log a full practice Wednesday. If Izien is cleared to play, he would likely start at safety alongside Antoine Winfield if Tykee Smith (neck/shoulder) is unable to suit up.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Good to go against Niners

Izien (quadriceps) is active for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Izien has been cleared to return after a two-game absence due to a quadriceps injury that he picked up in Week 3 against the Jets. Izien has one solo tackle across two regular-season games and has been limited to special teams this year.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Questionable for Week 6

Izien (quadriceps) is questionable for Sunday's game against San Francisco, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports. • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Won't play at Seattle

Coach Todd Bowles said Friday that Izien (quadriceps) is out for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Izien will sit out for a second straight game as he continues to recover from a quad injury he picked up in Week 3 versus the Jets. In his absence, Kaevon Merriweather could see an uptick in reps in the secondary in Week 5.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Out for Sunday

Izien (quadriceps) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Eagles, Greg Auman of Fox Sports reports. The 25-year-old from Rutgers was unable to practice both Wednesday and Thursday due to a quadriceps injury, so it's no surprise he'll be unavailable Sunday. Expect Kaevon Merriweather to serve as Tampa Bay's top reserve safety while Izien is sidelined in Week 4.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Won't return due to quad injury

Izien has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Jets due to a quadriceps injury. Izien picked up the injury in the first half, and it has been deemed severe enough that he won't return to Sunday's contest. Kaevon Merriweather will be the Bucs' top reserve safety behind Tykee Smith and Antoine Winfield for the rest of the game due Izien's injury.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Past oblique injury

Izien (oblique) was a full participant in Thursday's practice. Izien wasn't cleared to play in the Buccaneers' Week 1 win over the Falcons due to an oblique injury that he picked up in mid-August. However, his ability to practice in full Thursday indicates that he should make his 2025 regular-season debut against the Texans on Monday. Izien appeared in 14 regular-season games for the Bucs in 2024 and finished with 75 tackles (48 solo), three pass defenses (one interception) and one forced fumble.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Misses Thursday's practice

Izien (oblique) did not participate in Thursday's practice, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Izien has opened the week with back-to-back DNPs due to an oblique strain that he suffered during the preseason. He would need to practice in at least a limited capacity Friday in order to have a shot at playing in Sunday's regular-season opener against the Falcons in Atlanta. Kaevon Merriweather would be poised to see more rotational snaps at safety alongside starters Tykee Smith and Antoine Winfield if Izien is not cleared to play.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Absent from practice

Izien (oblique) did not participate at the Buccaneers' practice Wednesday, Brianna Dix of the team's official site reports. Izien suffered an oblique injury in the team's second preseason contest Aug. 16 versus the Steelers, and he continues to nurse the injury to open the 2025 campaign. The safety will have two more chances to return to practice prior to Sunday's regular-season opener against the Falcons.

He's expected to serve as Tampa Bay's third safety behind Antoine Winfield (leg) and Tykee Smith this season. Izien appeared in 14 regular-season games in 2024, made 10 starts, and finished with 75 tackles (48 solo), three pass breakups, including one interception, and one forced fumble.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Leading tackler versus Cowboys

Izien tallied 13 tackles (nine solo) during Tampa Bay's loss to the Cowboys on Sunday. Izien got the start at safety as Antoine Winfield (knee) Kaevon Merriweather (knee) were both out, and he ended up leading the team in tackles. The 24-year-old has now racked up a career high 75 tackles (48 solo) and will look to increase his totals during the team's final two matchups of the season.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Ready to rock

Izien (groin) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Cowboys, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The undrafted second-year pro from Rutgers upgraded to full practice Friday after beginning the week with back-to-back limited sessions, so it appears he's recovered from his groin injury in time to suit up in Week 16. Izien has played all over the field for the Bucs' defense, and he's expected to serve as the team's top reserve safety and cornerback Sunday.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Questionable for Sunday

Izien (groin) is listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Chargers. Izien appears to be trending in the right direction ahead of Week 15, as he upgraded from limited practice Wednesday and Thursday to a full session Friday. The Rutgers product has been productive in 12 appearances this season, recording 61 total tackles and three passes defended, including one interception. If Izien can play through his groin issue Sunday, he's expected to serve as Tampa Bay's top backup safety and slot corner.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Bucs' leading tackler in win

Izien recorded 10 tackles (five solo) during Sunday's 30-7 win against the Giants. Helping to lead a defensive effort that held the Giants to just 245 yards of total offense Sunday, Izien managed his best tackle total since Week 2 while playing from the slot with Tykee Smith (knee) out. His role in Week 13 at Carolina could depend on the availability of Smith.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Limited workload Thursday

Izien (elbow) was a limited participant at Thursday's practice. Izien is in danger of missing his second straight game. However, his limited workload Thursday is a progression from last week's string of DNPs. Antoine Winfield (foot) was also limited Thursday, and Izien would presumably be next man up if the starting safety is ultimately unable to give it a go. The Buccaneers do not play until Monday night against the Ravens, affording both players an extra day to get healthy.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Absent from injury report

Izien (leg) was not listed on the Buccaneers' injury report Wednesday. Izien had been dealing with a leg injury towards the tail end of training camp, but he appears to be fully healthy ahead of Sunday's regular-season opener against the Commanders. Izien finished 2023 with 65 tackles (47 solo), two passes defended, two interceptions and one forced fumble across 17 regular-season games.

  • Buccaneers' Christian Izien: Missing practice

Izien (leg) did not practice Wednesday, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Izien is considered day-to-day with the injury and could still suit up for the team's preseason finale against the Dolphins on Friday. If not, he should be ready to go Week 1 against the Commanders, where he's once again expected to operate as the team's slot corner in 2024.
