Steelers' Germie Bernard: Chance to shine in preseason opener
Bernard will have the opportunity to work in an expanded role in Thursday's preseason opener against the Packers due to injuries to both Michael Pittman (right leg) and DK Metcalf (undisclosed), Jacob Punturi of SI.com reports.
The Steelers released their initial depth chart Aug. 5, which had Roman Wilson pencilled in as the WR3 alongside Pittman and Metcalf while Bernard was listed as the No. 4 wideout. Bernard, a second-round selection of the Steelers in the 2026 NFL Draft, has been battling against Wilson for a spot on the first-team offense, and Thursday's preseason game will be stage in which both wideouts audition for a starting spot for the upcoming regular season, especially if both Pittman and Metcalf are sidelined against Green Bay.

Steelers' Germie Bernard: Battling Wilson for WR3 spot
Bernard got most of his reps in the slot with the first-team offense at Friday's practice, Alan Saunders of Steelers Now reports.
Bernard is competing for the third spot on the wide receiver depth chart with Roman Wilson, who mostly worked on the outside with the second-team offense Friday. That usage marked a departure from Wednesday's practice, when Wilson logged most of the reps in three-receiver sets alongside DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman. Bernard has also seen some time on the outside, with Wilson shifting into the slot, so the Steelers are still identifying their best combinations and pecking order at wide receiver at this early stage of training camp. Bernard is a rookie second-round pick, while Wilson was a third-round selection in 2024.

Steelers' Germie Bernard: Role as rookie TBD
Bernard, who showed "confident hands and good body control" during OTAs and minicamp, per Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, figures to compete with Roman Wilson this summer for work behind DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman in three-receiver sets.
DeFabo notes that Wilson got almost all of the first-team reps in such sets this spring, but the competition between the 2024 third-rounder and Bernard should heat up during training camp. Of the two, Bernard -- who the Steelers took 47th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft -- brings more fantasy upside down the road, but it remains to be seen how much work he'll see out of the gate in the team's Aaron Rodgers-helmed offense. With that in mind, DeFabo suggests that while the 6-foot-1, 206-pound Alabama product has the versatility to line up everywhere, he "probably will carve out his niche as a big slot" as a rookie.
