The Jets claimed Mathis off waivers Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Mathis was waived by the Commanders on Saturday after being a healthy scratch in each of the last three games. He'll join the Jets and could suit up for the regular-season finale against the Dolphins on Sunday. Mathis appeared in 12 regular-season games for Washington and accumulated 17 tackles (eight solo) and one pass defense.

  • Commanders' Phidarian Mathis: Headed to IR

The Commanders placed Mathis (calf) on injured reserve Wednesday, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. The move corresponds with the team re-signing center Tyler Larsen. • Commanders' Phidarian Mathis: Full participant at OTAs

Mathis has been fully active at Washington's OTAs this spring, Zach Selby of the Commanders' website reports. Mathis was forced to miss the entire 2022 season after he suffered a torn meniscus in September, but he appears set to make his NFL debut in 2023. The defensive tackle was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he's projected to operate as a top depth option behind stars Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne on the defensive line in his sophomore campaign.

  • Commanders' Phidarian Mathis: Officially lands on IR

Mathis (knee) was placed on the Commanders' injured reserve Monday. Mathis is already set to miss the entirety of his rookie season after suffering a torn meniscus during his NFL debut against the Jaguars on Monday. In the second-round pick's absence, veterans Daniel Wise and Efe Obada should take over larger roles at backup defensive tackle.
