    Bills Still Need Another Playmaker

Fantasy News

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Could return by playoffs

Oliver (biceps) has a chance to return for the first week of the playoffs, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Buffalo coach Sean McDermott confirmed earlier this week that the defensive tackle needs surgery on his torn biceps, per Rapoport. The Bills also still plan to evaluate the trade market as a way to help their struggling run defense. In Oliver's absence, Larry Ogunjobi, Jordan Phillips, DaQuan Jones and Deone Walker will need to take on bigger roles.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Sent to injured reserve

The Bills placed Oliver (biceps) on injured reserve Tuesday. Coach Sean McDermott confirmed Oliver needs surgery, but there's a chance he could return during the playoffs should the Bills qualify for the postseason, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. It's a massive loss for the Buffalo defense that has struggled to stop the run this season. Oliver has appeared in just three regular-season games this season, logging 12 tackles (10 solo), including 3.0 sacks. Larry Ogunjobi, Jordan Phillips, DaQuan Jones (calf) and Deone Walker will need to pick up the slack.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Torn biceps confirmed

Head coach Sean McDermott confirmed Monday that Oliver tore his biceps during the Bills' 40-9 win over the Panthers on Sunday and is out indefinitely, Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News reports. Oliver was unable to return for the second half of Sunday's game, and further tests have confirmed that the 27-year-old defensive tackle tore his biceps. He'll be sidelined indefinitely while recovering, and it doesn't seem likely that he'll be cleared to return this season unless the Bills qualify for the playoffs and make a deep run. DaQuan Jones (calf), Larry Ogunjobi, Deone Walker, Michael Hoecht and Jordan Phillips are poised for bigger roles on the defensive line in Oliver's absence.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Likely out indefinitely

Oliver is feared to have sustained a torn biceps in Sunday's 40-9 win over the Panthers, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The 27-year-old defensive tackle recorded three total tackles, including 1.0 sacks, across 18 defensive snaps before exiting Sunday's game with an injury. If tests confirm a torn biceps, Oliver likely will be sidelined for the remainder of the season. He's battled multiple injuries throughout the year, recording 12 total tackles, including 3.0 sacks, across just three appearances. If Oliver misses time as expected, Larry Ogunjobi is likely to have an expanded role on the Bills' defensive line.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Won't return due to biceps injury

Oliver has been ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game against the Panthers due to a biceps injury, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. Oliver went to the locker room late in the second quarter after suffering the injury and was quickly ruled out for the rest of Sunday's game. With Oliver done for the day and DaQuan Jones (calf) inactive, the Bills will turn to Deone Walker, Larry Ogunjobi and Jordan Phillips to pick up the slack at defensive tackle the rest of the way.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Good to go vs Falcons

Oliver (ankle) has no injury designation for Buffalo's matchup versus the Falcons on Monday. Oliver is set to play for the first time since the team's Week 1 win over the Ravens after missing the last four games. Now healthy, the 27-year-old should return to his role as one of Buffalo's starting defensive tackles for Monday's matchup.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Limited in practice

Bills coach Sean McDermott said Oliver (ankle) will be limited in practice Thursday, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports. Oliver has missed four consecutive games due to a left ankle injury, and he also practiced in a limited capacity prior to being ruled out for Week 5 action. He'll work to upgrade to full practice reps in advance of Monday's road matchup against Atlanta.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Questionable tag for Week 5

Oliver (ankle) was limited in Friday's practice and is questionable for Sunday's game against New England. Oliver has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury against the Ravens in Week 1, but he has a chance to return from a three-game absence for Sunday's AFC East clash. T.J. Sanders (knee) and Deone Walker would continue to see additional snaps at defensive tackle if Oliver is not cleared to play.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Gets in limited practice

Oliver (ankle) was limited in Wednesday's practice. Oliver has missed the last three games after he was injured in the Week 1 win over the Ravens. A limited start to the week would suggest Oliver is closing in on a return, potentially as soon as Sunday against the Patriots.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Ruled out for Week 4

Oliver (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Saints, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. Oliver hasn't played since the Week 1 opener against the Ravens. DaQuan Jones, T.J. Sanders, Zion Logue and Deone Walker soaked up most of the defensive snaps on the interior of Buffalo's defensive line last Thursday night against Miami.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Doesn't practice Monday

Oliver (ankle) did not participate in Monday's walkthrough practice, Alec White of the Bills' official site reports. Oliver was unable to play in Sunday's win against the Jets after his foot was stepped on in practice last week. Head coach Sean McDermott did not specify a timeline for Oliver's return, but the seventh-year defensive tackle would have to practice in at least a limited capacity over the next two days to have a shot at playing against the Dolphins on Thursday. Deone Walker and rookie second-rounder T.J. Sanders would see increased work at defensive tackle alongside DaQuan Jones if Oliver cannot play Thursday.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Ruled out against Jets

Oliver (foot) won't play Sunday against the Jets, Bills coach Sean McDermott said Friday, Maddy Glab of the Bills' official site reports. McDermott added that Oliver got stepped on in practice Wednesday. Oliver was subsequently seen wearing a walking boot in the locker room Thursday. The defensive tackle will need to recover quickly to avoid missing additional action, as the Bills will have a quick turnaround before hosting the Dolphins on Thursday in Week 3.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Spotted in walking boot Thursday

Oliver (ankle) didn't participate in practice Thursday and had a walking boot on his left foot in the locker room, Sal Capaccio of WGR 550 Sports Radio reports. Oliver wasn't listed on Wednesday's injury report but appears to have picked up an ankle injury during the week, putting his availability for Sunday's game against the Jets in jeopardy. If Oliver's unable to suit up, T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker would likely be in line for additional opportunities on the interior of Buffalo's defensive line.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Regresses in 2024

Oliver recorded 29 total tackles (14 solo), including 3.0 sacks, while adding three forced fumbles over 14 regular-season games in 2024. The 27-year-old was one of the NFL's most productive defensive linemen in 2023 after posting 51 total tackles, including 9.5 sacks, across 16 regular-season games. However, he wasn't able to repeat that performance. Despite the dip in production, Oliver still led Buffalo's defense with three forced fumbles and ranked fourth on the team in sacks. He signed a four-year, $68 million deal with the Bills last offseason, and there's been no indication the team is looking to get out from under that deal.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Strips Wilson, sacks Rodgers in win

Oliver tallied four tackles (three solo), including 1.0 sacks, and one forced fumble during the Bills' 40-14 win over the Jets on Sunday. Both of Oliver's big plays came late in the third quarter of Sunday's blowout. Matt Milano pounced on a fumble that was caused by Oliver stripping the ball out of Garrett Wilson's hands, and that turnover led to a 14-yard touchdown pass from Josh Allen to rookie Keon Coleman three plays later. Oliver then got to Aaron Rodgers for a 12-yard sack on the final play of the third quarter, and the Bills opted to pull their starters for the fourth quarter. Oliver is now up to 3.0 sacks through 14 regular-season games, 2.0 of which have come over his last three games.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Past hamstring issue

Oliver (hamstring) has no injury designation ahead of Sunday's matchup against the Titans. Oliver upgraded from limited work Wednesday and Thursday to a full practice session Friday, suggesting that he's moved past his hamstring issue. Expect Oliver to start alongside DaQuan Jones as part of the Bills' top interior defensive-line duo in Week 7.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Won't return in Week 6

Oliver (hamstring) has been deemed out for Monday's clash against the Jets, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com reports. Oliver will miss his second straight contest due to a hamstring injury he suffered in practice last week. The veteran defensive lineman did not practice in any capacity this week, so he could be in danger of missing Week 7 as well. In Oliver's absence, DeWayne Carter logged his highest snap count of the season last Sunday, and he could again see extended work against the Jets on Monday Night Football.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Ruled out for Week 5

Bills head coach Sean McDermott said Friday that Oliver (hamstring) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Texans, Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.comreports. Oliver popped up on the injury report Thursday as a limited participant, so it looks like he injured his hamstring in practice and will be forced to miss at least one game as a result. Until Oliver is cleared to retake the field, rookie third-round pick DeWayne Carter will stand to handle an expanded role on defense.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Suffers knee injury Saturday

Oliver suffered a knee injury during Saturday's preseason opener against the Bears. Even though he's been cleared to play, he will not return to the game, according to the NFL Network broadcast. We'll see if the early week practice reports reveal anything more, but it looks like the Bills may have dodged a bullet after Oliver was injured in the first quarter. The defensive tackle is arguably the team's most important player on that side of the ball, so perhaps the Bills are just playing it safe with a player who will not require much work ahead of Week 1.

  • Bills' Ed Oliver: Coming off best season

Oliver finished the 2023 regular season with 51 tackle (including 9.5 sacks), three passes defensed and one interception in 16 games. All of those figures were a career high or tied for a career high for the 2019 first-rounder, while the 9.5 sacks were particularly noteworthy considering he is an interior lineman. Oliver and DaQuan Jones will continue to lead one of the stronger units on the team. The Bills did lose quite a bit of depth in the offseason and will probably draft a defensive lineman this weekend, but no one will enter the fray to meddle with Oliver's projected playing time, plus the Bills need a wide receiver (or two) more than any other position. If your league forces you to have a spot for both defensive ends and tackles, Oliver is one of the league's better IDP choices for the latter slot.
