Impact Ben Johnson Has On Bears

Player Outlook
Guessing what Moore might be from year to year has been a fool's errand. He had one truly elite season in 2023, an elite-efficiency low-volume season in 2020, a high-volume low-efficiency season in 2021, and a major disappointment in Caleb Williams' rookie season. In 2025 he should benefit from Ben Johnson as the head coach and hopefully some improvement from Williams in his second season. He'll also have to hold off youngsters Rome Odunze and Luther Burden. With a new system, it is not easy to guess the roles and target share each pass catcher will receive, but for now, we project Moore to be the best Bears wide receiver, worthy of a pick in Round 4 of full PPR redraft leagues. There is significant upside at that cost if Moore is the clear WR1 and Williams hits his ceiling, but also a significant risk if Burden or Odunze plays a bigger role than we are projecting.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Gains 14 yards Friday

Moore brought in his lone target for 14 receiving yards in Friday's 29-27 preseason win over the Chiefs. Moore made his second appearance with the starting offense this preseason, making a nice grab after securing two balls in last week's exhibition. Fantasy managers should expect more production from the talented wideout once the regular season kicks off, especially in an overhauled offense led by head coach Ben Johnson. A clean bill of health should result in the fifth 1,000-yard receiving season of Moore's career after falling just short of that mark last year in QB Caleb Williams' rookie season.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Nabs two receptions Sunday

Moore corralled both of his targets for 16 yards in Sunday's preseason win over the Bills. Moore made his 2025 preseason debut with the rest of the first-team offense Sunday. QB Caleb Williams was in sync with his No. 1 target, connecting on a pair of tight sideline throws before exiting after two offensive drives. Moore fell 34 yards short of a 1,000-yard receiving season in 2024, something new HC Ben Johnson will look to amend for his top wideout.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Set for preseason action

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said Wednesday that the team's starters, including Moore, will suit up for Sunday's preseason game against Buffalo, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports. Moore and the majority of starters sat out Chicago's preseason opener against Miami last weekend, presumably while still picking up Johnson's playbook, but the first-team offense will make its exhibition debut versus the Bills on Sunday. Johnson has regularly deployed Moore out of the backfield throughout training camp, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports, with offensive coordinator Declan Doyle saying the team is "trying to get him touches in every way we can." Moore remains positioned as the No. 1 wideout for second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, but given the tough target competition of Chicago's crowded skill-position groups, an uptick in designed plays out of the backfield would be a welcome development. Last season, Moore logged a career-high 14 carries for 75 yards, though he didn't score on the ground.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Seeing action out of backfield

Moore has been getting reps out of the backfield at Bears training camp, Jason Lieser of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. "He's a physical, run-after-catch, just-get-me-the-ball type of guy," coach Ben Johnson said Tuesday. "There's a number of things that we're looking to do and explore how we get him the ball and get him in space." Moore is no stranger to seeing snaps out of the backfield, as he registered a career-high 14 carries last season, turning them into 75 scoreless yards. The Panthers also used Moore in a similar role during his 2018 rookie season, handing him the ball 13 times for 172 yards. Chicago has a plethora of weapons at Caleb Williams' disposal, and Moore is consistently being taken as a WR2 in fantasy drafts this summer.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Embracing new coaching culture

Bears head coach Ben Johnson said Tuesday that Moore "has been a guy that's highly motivated" during voluntary OTAs, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun Times reports. "[Moore] wants to be as complete of a receiver as he can possibly be, and he's willing to do whatever it takes to get there," Johnson said. The wide receiver's poor body language last season was also addressed by Johnson, who said at the start of OTAs that the offseason will be "all about educating" Chicago's players about new team culture expectations. Moore said Tuesday that his body language was brought up once this offseason, but that "we nipped it in the bud and it never happened again." Entering his second season with Caleb Williams under center, the departure of Keenan Allen in free agency leaves Moore as the clear leader among the Bears' pass-catching corps, and he remains entrenched as the team's No. 1 wideout. Chicago's O-line upgrades and Johnson's track record in Detroit both point to a much improved offense for 2025, but Moore faces considerable target competition from last year's No. 9 overall pick Rome Odunze, rookie second-rounder Luther Burden (undisclosed) and tight end Colston Loveland (shoulder), the 10th overall selection of the 2025 draft. Moore tallied a career-high 98 catches across 17 regular-season games with Williams in 2024, though he took a step backward from his breakout 2023 campaign in terms of yards (966 vs. 1,364) and touchdowns (six vs. eight).

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Busy day in finale

Moore secured nine of 10 targets for 86 yards and a touchdown and rushed once for five yards in the Bears' 24-22 win over the Packers on Sunday. He also lost a fumble. Moore led the Bears in receptions, receiving yards and targets, a customary development for the talented veteran. He did almost all the work on his 32-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter, taking a screen and weaving his way down the right side of the field to paydirt. Moore worked well with rookie first overall pick Caleb Williams all season, posting posting a career-high 98 receptions for 966 yards and six touchdowns while playing all 17 regular-season games for the fourth time in as many seasons since the schedule expanded in 2021.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Another busy afternoon Sunday

Moore secured seven of 10 targets for 68 yards and rushed once for two yards in the Bears' 34-17 loss to the Lions on Sunday. Moore put together a signature PPR-friendly line, finishing second in receptions, receiving yards and targets behind Keenan Allen and his season-best performance. Moore has at least seven catches in five of the last six games and six grabs in the other contest in that sample, affording him a coveted safe floor in PPR formats heading into a Week 17 home matchup against the Seahawks on Thursday night, during which he should also garner a fair share of Caleb Williams' attention.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Posts PPR gem Monday

Moore hauled in all eight of his targets for 46 yards while adding three rushing attempts for 24 yards in Monday's 30-12 loss to Minnesota. Moore led the Bears in receptions despite seeing five fewer targets than fellow wideout Keenan Allen. The latter produced the better fantasy score after reeling in his fourth touchdown in as many weeks, but Moore provided an especially strong line for those in PPR formats. Expect both of Chicago's top receivers to be busy in Week 16 with a tough matchup on tap against the Lions on Sunday.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: WRs to Start

Moore had a down game in Week 14 at San Francisco with six catches for 49 yards, but he still had eight targets. That's now four games in a row with at least seven targets, and he scored at least 13.7 PPR points in three of those outings. One of those games was against Minnesota in Week 12, and Moore had seven catches for 106 yards and a touchdown on seven targets. The Vikings are No. 1 in most Fantasy points allowed to opposing receivers, and Moore is worth using as a No. 2 Fantasy receiver in all leagues. I also consider Keenan Allen a high-end No. 3 Fantasy receiver in Week 15, and he scored 23.6 PPR points against Minnesota in Week 2. And Rome Odunze is a low-end No. 3 Fantasy receiver even though he just scored 20.2 PPR points at San Francisco in Week 14. Against the Vikings, Odunze had 8.9 PPR points, but he had 10 targets for five catches and 39 yards.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Leading receiver on six receptions

Moore (quadriceps) finished with six receptions on eight targets for 49 yards in Sunday's 38-13 loss to San Francisco. Moore overcame a quadriceps injury to suit up Sunday and led the Bears in all receiving categories except scoring. That honor went to rookie wideout Rome Odunze, who cashed in both of Caleb Williams' late touchdown strikes in the lopsided loss. Moore's production paled in comparison to his previous two contests in which he racked up 15 receptions for 203 yards and two scores. The durable receiver should remain a focal point of Chicago's passing attack when the team visits Minnesota next Monday.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Playing in Week 14

Moore (quadriceps) is active for Sunday's game in San Francisco. Moore was contained to just one limited practice (Friday) during Week 14 prep, but he relayed to Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com afterward, "I play through everything." Indeed, Moore will be available to the Bears' offense for the 13th time in as many contests this season, and he's coming off his most productive two-game stretch of the season (15-203-2 line on 23 targets) from Weeks 12 and 13.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Looks likely to play Week 14

Moore (quadriceps), who is questionable for Sunday's matchup versus San Francisco, is expected to suit up, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Schefter's report seems to confirm Moore's own words Friday, when the receiver suggested he would be able to take the field against the 49ers. Moore last missed a game in 2020, so he's proven capable of pushing through the wears and tears of the NFL season. If Moore is indeed able to play Sunday, he'll try to build upon a pair of consecutive big performances, as he totaled 15 catches for 203 yards and two touchdowns over the past two weeks.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Optimistic he'll play

Moore (quadriceps) is optimistic he'll play against the 49ers on Sunday, after being listed as questionable on the final injury report, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports. "I play through everything," Moore said Friday, suggesting he expects to play despite managing just one limited practice at the end of the week. He's missed two games in seven NFL seasons, with a concussion holding him out for the 2019 finale and then COVID keeping him out Week 14 of 2020. Moore has played through his fair share of minor injuries, but he's also had better luck than most at simply avoiding them in the first place. In any case, it sounds like his odds are better than 50/50 to avoid the inactive list ahead of Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.
... See More ... See Less
  • Bears' DJ Moore: Questionable for Week 14

Moore (quadriceps) is officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the 49ers, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports. Moore logged a limited practice Friday, but it appears his quad injury has a legitimate chance of impacting his availability for Week 14. The standout receiver's status will be made official no later than 90 minutes prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff. RB D'Andre Swift (quadriceps) also is listed as questionable for Sunday's road matchup, though on a bright note for Chicago, Keenan Allen (ankle) does not carry an injury designation after returning to practice as a full participant Thursday.
... See More ... See Less
  • Bears' DJ Moore: Sidelined for another practice

Moore (quadricep) didn't practice Thursday. While Keenan Allen (ankle) returned to practice Thursday as a full participant after sitting out Wednesday, Moore remained a spectator for the second straight day. In order to avoid taking a designation into Sunday's game at San Francisco, Moore will likely need to practice in at least a limited fashion Friday. If Moore can't shake off the quad injury ahead of Sunday's contest, Allen and fellow wideouts Rome Odunze and tight end Cole Kmet would represent the top pass-catching options for quarterback Caleb Williams.
... See More ... See Less
  • Bears' DJ Moore: WRs to Start

Moore and Keenan Allen are both worth using as No. 2 receivers in Week 14 at San Francisco, and hopefully both stay hot in this matchup. Moore has scored at least 13.7 PPR points since Thomas Brown started calling plays for the Bears, including his past two outings with at least 23.7 PPR points. He has 30 targets over that span for 22 catches, 265 yards and two touchdowns over that span. Allen also has taken off since Brown started calling plays, and Allen has 31 targets in his past three games for 18 catches, 200 yards and three touchdowns, with at least 23.6 PPR points in his past two outings against Minnesota and Detroit. San Francisco is No. 6 in fewest Fantasy points allowed to opposing receivers, but I'm still trusting Moore and Allen to each deliver a solid stat line on the road.
... See More ... See Less
  • Bears' DJ Moore: Misses practice Wednesday

Moore did not practice Wednesday due to a quadricep injury. Moore presumably picked up the quad injury at some point during the Bears' 23-20 loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, though he didn't appear to be laboring at any point during the contest on his way to finishing with a 8-97-1 receiving line on 16 targets. Keenan Allen (ankle) was also sidelined at practice Wednesday, and while it's possible the Bears are simply taking a cautious approach with the health of their top two wideouts, both players' statuses will need to be monitored ahead of Sunday's road matchup against the 49ers. Rookie first-round pick Rome Odunze would step into an increased role on offense if either Moore or Allen are forced to miss any time.

  • Bears' DJ Moore: Perfect effort in OT loss

Moore recorded seven receptions on seven targets for 106 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 30-27 overtime loss to the Vikings. He added one rush for 13 yards. Moore showed the ability to connect with Caleb Williams in all areas of the field in the loss, as he had long gains of 37 and 27 yards, the latter of which set up a game-tying field goal to send the game to overtime. He also worked effectively in the short areas of the field, including on a 10-yard touchdown reception early in the fourth quarter -- his first trip to the end zone since Week 5. While it's been a disappointing season for Moore, he has 14 receptions on 14 targets for 168 yards across two games since Chicago made a change at offensive coordinator.
... See More ... See Less
  • Bears' DJ Moore: WRs to Sit

I'm hopeful that new Bears offensive coordinator Thomas Brown helps Moore break out of his slump, but I would only start him in three-receiver leagues in Week 11 against the Packers. Moore has scored 7.3 PPR points or less in four games in a row. He has not topped four catches, 33 yards, or scored a touchdown in every game over that span, and he had at least six targets in each of his past two outings against Arizona and New England. Cornerback Jaire Alexander and safety Evan Williams are expected to return for the Packers after being out with injuries, and Moore combined for just 14.9 PPR points in two games against Green Bay last season.
... See More ... See Less
  • Bears' DJ Moore: WRs to Sit

Moore has been tough to trust lately, and I would only start him in three-receiver leagues in Week 10 against New England. It's not so much about the matchup, although Moore could draw Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, which isn't easy. In Moore's past three games against Jacksonville, Washington and Arizona, he has combined for 18.7 PPR points with 10 catches for 80 yards and no touchdowns on 18 targets. Moore and Caleb Williams aren't on the same page, and Chicago has plenty of weapons besides Moore with Keenan Allen, Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet and D'Andre Swift. I hope Moore breaks out of his slump in Week 10, but he's not a must-start receiver given his recent level of play.
