Patrick Mahomes Returns to Chiefs Training Camp

Player Outlook
Mahomes is coming off last year's torn ACL and LCL in his knee, which he suffered in Week 15. He practiced in full in the early days of training camp and seems ready for the start of Week 1. Mahomes is still considered a low-end No. 1 Fantasy quarterback, and he should be drafted with a mid-round pick in one-quarterback leagues. In multiple-QB formats, Mahomes is worth drafting no later than Round 3. Prior to getting injured, Mahomes was having his best Fantasy season since 2022 at 23.6 points per game. Part of that was due to him setting a career high for rushing yards (422) and rushing touchdowns (five) in just 14 games, but it's hard to imagine him relying on his legs this season due to the injury. The Chiefs also invested heavily in their backfield with the additions of Kenneth Walker III, who will try to take pressure off Mahomes in the ground game. That said, Travis Kelce is back in 2026, Rashee Rice is healthy as is Xavier Worthy, and the Chiefs have Eric Bieniemy back as the offensive coordinator (Mahomes averaged 28.4 Fantasy points per game when Bieniemy was the OC from 2018-22). Hopefully, Mahomes is healthy for Week 1 and can once again be a standout Fantasy quarterback.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Won't play in preseason opener

Mahomes (knee) won't play in Kansas City's preseason opener against the Rams on Saturday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Mahomes has been progressing well in his recovery from a torn ACL that was surgically repaired in December. He has been cleared for 11-on-11 drills, but the Chiefs don't have much incentive to rush the star quarterback's return to game action. Justin Fields, Garrett Nussmeier and Chris Oladokun will suit up at quarterback Saturday. Mahomes continues to target the Sept. 14 regular-season opener against the Broncos as his return date.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Unlikely to play in preseason opener

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Friday that Mahomes (knee) is unlikely to play in the Chiefs' preseason opener against the Rams on Saturday, Aug. 15, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports. Reid isn't sure if Mahomes will play in the second or third preseason game, either. The Chiefs typically play their starters more than other teams in August, but it won't be shocking if they make an exception for a superstar QB coming back from an ACL tear. Mahomes' return has gone well, by all accounts, with no signs of limitation early at training camp. He may not run as often as he did last year, but he's on track for a Week 1 appearance.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Taking part in 11-on-11s

Mahomes (knee) is participating in 11-on-11 team drills during Wednesday's training camp practice, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid shared that Mahomes had been "cleared to participate fully" to begin training camp, and seeing the 30-year-old signal-caller now taking part in team drills affirms his tremendous recovery progress. That said, it still remains to be seen whether Mahomes has been cleared for game action, be that in the preseason or Week 1 against the Broncos on Monday, Sept. 14. Mahomes has stated that his aim is to be ready for the start of the regular season.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Expected back for camp?

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Thursday that Mahomes (knee) should "be able to do some things in camp," Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports. Reid also said Mahomes is "on course to get ready for camp", though "the healing process has to keep taking place." It's mostly coach-speak, but overwhelmingly positive, which meshes with previous favorable reports on Mahomes' rehab from mid-December surgery to repair ACL and LCL tears. He's been limited to individual drills and 7-on-7s at OTAs, allowing Justin Fields to take first-team reps.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: On the field for OTAs

Mahomes (knee) participated in Kansas City's opening OTA practice Tuesday, Nate Taylor of ESPN reports. While the extent of his participation wasn't revealed, a video was posted on social media of the QB making a throw on the field while sporting a brace on his left knee. Mahomes is bouncing back from December surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL, and his participation in Tuesday's session, in any capacity, is encouraging. The two-time MVP's stated goal is to be ready for Week 1 action, and in recent weeks Kansas City has expressed optimism that Mahomes will be in uniform Sept. 14 against the Broncos.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Agrees to contract restructure

Mahomes (knee) recently agreed to restructure his contract, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. The Chiefs add $43.56 million in cap space with the restructure, but they'll still need to make other moves to become cap-compliant before the start of the new league year March 11. Mahomes is in the early stages of his rehab process after undergoing surgery in mid-December to repair ACL and LCL tears. He said in mid-January that he was aiming to be ready for Week 1 of 2026, though he acknowledged that he "can't predict what happens throughout the process," per The Associated Press.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Eyeing Week 1 return in 2026

Mahomes has begun rehab following surgery to repair the torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, and the Chiefs are optimistic that the star quarterback could be back as soon as Week 1 of the 2026 regular season, ESPN.com reports. Head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder told reporters Wednesday that Mahomes' operation with Dr. Dan Cooper was successful, per Jesse Newell of The Athletic. The recovery process for injuries similar to Mahomes' typically takes around nine months. The 2026 regular season is expected to kick off Sept. 10, so Mahomes has a realistic chance of being back early in the season, and possibly as soon as Week 1, if all goes to plan with his recovery. Gardner Minshew is Kansas City's starting quarterback for the remainder of the 2025 season following Mahomes' injury in Week 15.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Undergoes surgery

Mahomes underwent surgery to repair his torn left ACL and LCL on Monday. Mahomes was in Dallas on Monday to get a second opinion on his knee injury. Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Mahomes tore the LCL in addition to the ACL in his left knee, making recovery potentially more complicated. The Chiefs noted that Mahomes' rehab will begin immediately, but a timeline for his return to the field has not been announced. Gardner Minshew will serve as the Chiefs' starter for the rest of the 2025 season.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Seeking second opinion

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Monday that Mahomes is traveling to Dallas to receive a second opinion on the surgery required to repair the torn ACL in his left knee, Nate Taylor of ESPN.com reports. Mahomes remains out for the rest of the season due to the injury he sustained Week 15 versus the Chargers, but it appears that the exact surgery required to repair his left ACL, and therefore potentially also his recovery timetable, have yet to be determined. Expect clarity on Mahomes' upcoming procedure, as well as a timetable for him to undergo surgery, before long. In any case, Gardner Minshew is positioned to finish the 2025 campaign under center for Kansas City, beginning with Sunday's road matchup against the Titans.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Tears ACL in loss to Chargers

Mahomes (knee) suffered a torn ACL in Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Chargers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Mahomes will miss the remainder of the season, and his recovery could stretch into the 2026 regular season. He was hurt in the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Chargers, which eliminated Kansas City from playoff contention. Gardner Minshew will take over under center for the Chiefs in Week 16 against the Titans.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Set for MRI on left knee

Coach Andy Reid said after Sunday's 16-13 loss to the Chargers that Mahomes is slated to undergo an MRI on his left knee, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. With regard to the QB's injury, Reid acknowledged to reporters that "it didn't look good." Given the Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention by Sunday's loss, the team will presumably proceed with caution with the franchise signal-caller. If Mahomes ends up sidelined Week 16 and possibly beyond, Gardner Minshew would be in line to work as Kansas City's starter.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Falters in brutal SNF matchup

Mahomes completed 14 of 33 pass attempts for 160 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions while gaining 59 rushing yards on seven attempts in Sunday's 20-10 loss to Houston. Mahomes was shut down almost completely by the Texans' vaunted defense on Sunday Night Football, a scene we have not seen much over the course of the signal-caller's illustrious career. All credit goes to Houston's defense, but Kansas City's role players didn't offer much relief. The Chiefs' receivers suffered six drops in the primetime loss, with notable guffaws coming in critical moments from stars Rashee Rice and Travis Kelce. Mahomes may have to pull out one of his Superman games against the Chargers in order to keep his team's bleak playoff hopes alive in Week 15.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Zero TDs in OT win

Mahomes completed 29 of 46 passes for 352 yards and zero touchdowns with one interception in Sunday's 23-20 overtime win over the Colts. He added 30 rushing yards on four carries and threw a two-point conversion. The yardage total was a season high as Mahomes led a fourth-quarter comeback from a 20-9 deficit, but Kareem Hunt had Kansas City's only TD while Harrison Butker booted five field goals. Mahomes has a concerning 1:3 TD:INT over the last three games, but Sunday's win could be the spark the team needed to turn things around. He'll likely need to be more productive in Week 13 for a Thanksgiving tilt against the Cowboys.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Loses showdown with Josh Allen

Mahomes completed 15 of 34 pass attempts for 250 yards, no touchdowns and one interception while adding five yards on his only carry in Sunday's 28-21 loss to Buffalo. Mahomes picked a poor time to have his worst passing performance of the season after being outshined by rival Josh Allen (123.2 QB rating) in a loss that reshaped the landscape atop the AFC. It was Mahomes' first contest in 2025 in which he failed to register a touchdown, and also the first time he finished with a completion rate below 50 percent. Even with Sunday's dud, the 29-year-old heads into the upcoming bye week completing 65 percent of his passes for 2,349 passing yards and 21 total touchdowns through nine starts. Fantasy managers will have to search for a replacement signal-caller in Week 10 before Mahomes returns to action against Denver on Nov. 16.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Fills stat sheet in comfortable win

Mahomes completed 25 of 34 pass attempts for 299 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while adding 30 rushing yards on four attempts in Monday's 28-7 win over Washington. Mahomes got off to a rocky start when he was picked off on Kansas City's first two offensive drives in Monday's primetime matchup. The resilient superstar settled in after halftime, rattling off three touchdown passes on consecutive drives out of the break. It was Mahomes' first start committing multiple turnovers this season, but it also was his third-straight appearance recording three scores for fantasy managers. The 29-year-old is putting up elite numbers again in 2025 after taking a step back over the previous two years. Mahomes checks in with 2,099 passing yards and 21 total touchdowns through eight starts as the Chiefs prepare to face Josh Allen and the Bills on Sunday in a Week 9 showdown of elite quarterbacks.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Leads Chiefs to easy win

Mahomes completed 26 of 35 passes for 286 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 31-0 win over the Raiders. He added four rushes for 28 yards. Mahomes had a very efficient day and jumped on the Raiders early, leading touchdown drives in each of the Chiefs' four possessions. He completed three passes of more than 20 yards, including a 44-yard connection with Travis Kelce on the team's first possession, and had passing scores from two, eight and three yards away. After throwing for only one touchdown in the first three games of the season, he has at least three passing scores in three of his last four contests. With Rashee Rice back in the mix and Xavier Worthy healthy, the Chiefs' offense should have the chance to take off in the second half of the campaign.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Leads KC to first victory

Mahomes completed 22 of 37 pass attempts for 224 yards and a touchdown while rushing five times for two yards in Sunday's 22-9 win over the Giants. It wasn't Mahomes' prettiest game, but he managed to will Kansas City to its first win of the 2025 season. The star quarterback actually put the ball on the ground twice, but fantasy managers breathed collective sighs of relief when both fumbles were recovered by the Chiefs. Mahomes seemed more willing to take deep shots in this contest, dialing up Tyquan Thornton for a long score and drawing a massive pass interference penalty on a deep shot to Hollywood Brown that led to a quick field goal before halftime. Mahomes has yet to eclipse the 300-yard mark in passing through three starts, but he may be asked to air it out more against Lamar Jackson and the high-powered Ravens' offense next Sunday.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Looks sharp in dress rehearsal

Mahomes completed eight of 13 pass attempts for 143 yards and a touchdown while adding 18 rushing yards on one attempt in Friday's 29-27 preseason loss to the Bears. Mahomes ramped up his preseason workload after logging just three snaps on offense over the Chiefs' previous two exhibition games. The superstar QB looked to be in mid-season form while orchestrating two lengthy scoring drives (15 total plays) in one quarter of action. Mahomes threw for a career-low 3,928 yards while tying his previous worst of 26 touchdowns across 16 contests in 2024. The 29-year-old will be poised to improve on those totals this upcoming year with fellow All-Pro Travis Kelce and an improving group of young talent around him.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Throws two picks in Super Bowl loss

Mahomes completed 21 of 32 pass attempts for 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions while taking four rushing attempts for 25 yards and a lost fumble in Sunday's 40-22 loss to the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. Mahomes was stifled for nearly three quarters in Super Bowl LIX before completing the first of three garbage-time touchdowns with 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter of Sunday's one-sided affair. The 28-year-old superstar saw his hopes of a potential third consecutive Super Bowl title erode away with each ensuing unsuccessful offensive drive against a ferocious unit led by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Mahomes saw a decline in total production in 2024 despite earning the top seed in the AFC, but he maintained a respectable 26:11 TD:INT in 16 starts in the regular season. The Chiefs will look to regroup following a disappointing showing on the national stage and bring in more talent to surround Mahomes for the upcoming 2025 campaign.

  • Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes: Returns to practice in full

Mahomes (ankle) was a full participant in Tuesday's practice. Mahomes was inactive in Week 18 with Kansas City having already secured the AFC's No. 1 seed. The star quarterback instead benefited from more time to recover from the right high-ankle sprain that he sustained in a Dec. 15 win over the Browns and then played through in Weeks 16 and 17. Mahomes looks like he'll be good to go for a divisional-round matchup with the Texans on Saturday.
