• Devin Funchess: Let go by Lions

  Rotowire Aug 29, 2022

Funchess has been released by the Lions, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. When healthy, the 28-year-old Funchess still has something left in the tank, and he started the preseason strong by showing his value as a red-zone threat. However, a mid-August shoulder stinger curbed his momentum, and Funchess ultimately was unable to do enough to earn a roster spot in Detroit. The Lions presumably will move forward with Brock Wright, James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra as depth options at tight end behind T.J. Hockenson.

• Lions' Devin Funchess: Out with shoulder injury

  Rotowire Aug 21, 2022

Funchess (shoulder) did not play in Saturday's preseason win over the Colts, Benjamin Raven of MLive.com reports. Funchess hurt his shoulder in Wednesday's practice, and an extended absence probably will damage the strong case he had been making for a roster spot. It remains to be seen whether or not he can return to the field in advance of the Lions' preseason finale next Sunday in Pittsburgh.

• Lions' Devin Funchess: Suffers stinger

  Rotowire Aug 18, 2022

Funchess left Wednesday's practice with a shoulder injury, but head coach Dan Campbell has labeled it as a stinger, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. Funchess could return to practice Thursday, but even if he's unable to, it doesn't appear to be an injury that will force him to miss extended time. The 28-year-old is currently competing for a spot at tight end, and was able to grab a touchdown in the Lions' preseason loss to the Falcons on Friday.

• Lions' Devin Funchess: Exits with shoulder issue

  Rotowire Aug 17, 2022

Funchess left Wednesday's practice with an apparent shoulder injury, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports. The severity of the injury is unclear, but it puts Funchess' status for Saturday's preseason game against the Colts in jeopardy. Since joining the Lions in June, the 28-year-old pass catcher has been making the transition from receiver to tight end, where he's been competing for a roster spot with rookie James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra. However, Funchess' case strengthened after he caught the only receiving touchdown for Detroit during last Friday's preseason opener against Atlanta. To maximize the veteran's chances of making the team, he'll need positive news on the health front regarding the shoulder issue, which forced him out of Wednesday's practice.

• Lions' Devin Funchess: Finds end zone in Lions debut

  Rotowire Aug 13, 2022

Funchess caught four of four targets for 19 yards and one touchdown during Friday's preseason opener against Atlanta. Funchess didn't get much work with the first-team offense, but the 6-foot-4 former wide receiver found paydirt on a back-corner fade on a pass from Tim Boyle just before halftime. Funchess then gained first downs on two more catches later on, the first of which included a broken tackle and the second involved the 27-year-old hurdling a defender. While Funchess probably remains firmly on the roster bubble, his effectiveness as a short-range receiving weapon could give the Lions something to think about when it comes time for roster cuts.

• Lions' Devin Funchess: Competing for roster spot

  Rotowire Aug 9, 2022

Funchess is competing for a back-end roster spot, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports. Head coach Dan Campbell reportedly said that he's looking to carry three tight ends on the gameday roster, specifically a blocker to complement T.J. Hockenson plus an all-purpose option behind those two. With Brock Wright and Garrett Griffin the clear options competing for the blocking role, Funchess is seemingly left to compete with fifth-round rookie James Mitchell and Shane Zylstra for the other opening. While Mitchell is probably the favorite given the investment Detroit made in him, Funchess -- a wide receiver making the transition to tight end, who hasn't appeared in an NFL game since 2019 -- could secure the spot with a strong preseason.

• Lions' Devin Funchess: Inks deal with Detroit

  Rotowire Jun 14, 2022

Funchess signed a contract with the Lions on Tuesday. Funchess was released by the Packers with an injury settlement in August last year and joined the 49ers' practice squad shortly before being cut with an injury designation. Now presumably healthy, the 28-year-old will look to carve out a role in Detroit, though he may have an uphill battle to make the roster seeing as he hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2019.

Funchess (undisclosed) was cut from the 49ers' practice squad injured list Monday. Funchess had been sidelined since last Tuesday due to an undisclosed injury, and he'll now be forced to seek out other opportunities. The 27-year-old hasn't appeared in a regular-season game since 2019.

• Devin Funchess: Out with injury

  Rotowire Dec 1, 2021

Funchess (undisclosed) was placed on the 49ers' practice squad injured list Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Funchess joined San Francisco's practice squad last week, and it didn't take long for him to go down with an injury. The 27-year-old dealt with a hamstring injury in training camp with the Packers before being released off injured reserve, though it's unclear if he aggravated that injury or if he's dealing with a new issue.

• Devin Funchess: Signed to 49ers' practice squad

  Rotowire Nov 23, 2021

Funchess was added to the 49ers' practice squad Tuesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. The 27-year-old has yet to play this season after reaching an injury settlement with the Packers in the preseason. Now healed from a hamstring injury, Funchess will look to provide depth at wide receiver for the 49ers. He has only appeared in one game since 2018, making three catches for 32 yards in a contest with the Colts in 2019. Funchess signed with the Packers in 2020 but sat out that season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

• Devin Funchess: Gets injury settlement

  Rotowire Aug 27, 2021

Funchess (hamstring) has been released from IR by the Packers with an injury settlement, Field Yates of ESPN reports. It remains to be seen how close Funchess is to being able to re-take the field. However, following this move, the wideout is now free to catch on with another team once he recovers from what ESPN's Rob Demovsky previously described as a lingering hamstring injury.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: Moved to IR

  Rotowire Aug 25, 2021

The Packers placed Funchess (lower body) on injured reserve Wednesday. The timing means he can't return this season unless he agrees to an injury settlement and becomes a free agent again. Even if that happens, Funchess is now 27 years old and has been either injured, ineffective or opted out every season since his 840-yard, eight-touchdown breakout for Carolina back in 2017. It remains to be seen if he's actually dealing with a severe injury or if he just didn't do enough to make the Week 1 roster before suffering a less-serious injury.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: Unavailable Saturday

  Rotowire Aug 21, 2021

Funchess (lower body) will not play Saturday versus the Jets, Jason Wilde of ESPN.com reports. Funchess was a dominant force in the team's preseason opener corralling six passes for 70 yards against the Texans, but the veteran wideout had to be carted off the field Wednesday with a lower-body injury that was later deemed to not serious. Funchess is in a heated battle for one the team's final roster spots at wide receiver along with Equanimeous St. Brown and Malik Taylor.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: No practice Thursday

  Rotowire Aug 19, 2021

Funchess (lower body) is not participating in Thursday's practice, Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette reports. Funchess had to be carted off the field after pulling up during Wednesday's practice, and while the nature and severity of his apparent injury remain undisclosed, it's not encouraging that he's absent Thursday. At the very least, Funchess is trending in the wrong direction for Saturday's preseason contest against the Jets, and it's within the realm of possibility that he's dealing with a serious injury.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: Carted off at practice

  Rotowire Aug 18, 2021

Funchess was carted off the practice field Wednesday with an apparent lower-body injury, Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com reports. Funchess is coming off an impressive preseason debut, having secured six of eight targets for 70 yards while displaying chemistry with Jordan Love (shoulder). However, the wideout now appears to have suffered a potentially worrisome injury. Funchess opted out of the 2020 season and was only able to suit up for one game in 2019 because of a broken collarbone.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: Leading receiver Saturday

  Rotowire Aug 15, 2021

Funchess caught six of eight targets for 70 yards in Saturday's preseason loss to the Texans. With most of the Packers' starting skill players off for the night, including Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams, Funchess got a chance to make an impact with Jordan Love (shoulder) under center, and he took advantage, leading all receivers in catches and yards. The 27-year-old is looking to get his career back on track after opting out of last season and playing only one game in 2019 due to a broken collarbone. Funchess will need to continue making good impressions if he's going to win a roster spot.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: Agrees to pay cut

  Rotowire Mar 9, 2021

Funchess is accepting a pay cut of approximately $750,000 to stay with the Packers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. Funchess opted out of the 2020 season a few months after he signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract. The deal tolls over to 2021, and the Packers apparently were ready to release him if he didn't agree to a smaller salary. Funchess will be only 27 years old for the upcoming season, but he's played in just one game since the end of 2018, bouncing from Carolina to Indianapolis to Green Bay. He may end up battling for a roster spot this summer.

• Packers' Devin Funchess: Gets one-year deal with Packers

  Rotowire Mar 26, 2020

Funchess (collarbone) has agreed to a one-year contract with the Packers, Jason Wilde of The Wisconsin State Journal reports. Funchess is signing a one-year deal for a second straight offseason, following a lost year in Indianapolis where he never made it back from injured reserve after suffering a broken collarbone Week 1. He should have plenty of time to recover before the 2020 campaign, likely challenging fellow big-bodied wideout Allen Lazard for the starting job opposite No. 1 target Davante Adams. The Green Bay offense still figures to go through Adams and the running backs, but there's potential for another receiving weapon to establish mainstream fantasy value (even though it didn't quite work out that way last year).

• Devin Funchess: Nearing deal with Green Bay

  Rotowire Mar 24, 2020

Funchess (collarbone) is expected to sign with the Packers in the near future, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. The particulars of Funchess' pending deal with Green Bay aren't yet known, but he'll likely be forced to settle for a one- or two-year deal with a modest amount of guaranteed money after a broken collarbone kept him sidelined for all but one game with the Colts last season. Assuming he finalizes a contract and proves healthy for the start of camp, the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Funchess could contend for a starting role in a Packers wideout corps that often lacked reliable options beyond top target Davante Adams in 2019. The 25-year-old turned in his best season in 2017 with the Panthers, recording 63 catches for 840 yards and eight touchdowns while playing all 16 games.

• Colts' Devin Funchess: Could return to Indy

  Rotowire Jan 29, 2020

General manager Chris Ballard suggested Funchess (collarbone) could re-sign with the Colts during the offseason, Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis reports. Funchess was unable to make good on his one-year, $10 million contract, missing the Colts' final 15 games after suffering a broken collarbone Week 1 and requiring surgery. He should be healthy before the start of the new league year in mid-March, and it sounds like the Colts would consider re-signing him at a lower price.
