Angels' Vaughn Grissom: Moving toward everyday role

Grissom will start at second base and bat third in Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.
The 25-year-old will occupy a prominent spot in the order for the series finale while the White Sox send lefty Noah Schultz to the hill. While Grissom has been a regular presence in the lineup against lefties since being activated from the injured list April 11, he's starting to gain some traction in the lineup against right-handed pitching, too. Grissom has started at second base over Adam Frazier in three of the Angels' last four matchups with righties and is holding down a .280/.356/.420 slash line with a 7:4 BB:K over 59 plate appearances on the season. Grissom hasn't yet produced much in the way of counting statistics with one home run, zero steals, seven RBI and six runs in 17 games, but the excellent approach he's displayed at the plate could lead to better production in a near-everyday role.

Grissom went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the White Sox.
The 25-year-old infielder got his first start of the season against a right-handed pitcher, getting the nod at first base in place of a resting Nolan Schanuel, and Grissom took advantage by driving an Erick Fedde sweeper over the left-field fence in the seventh inning. Grissom's slashing an impressive .342/.413/.526 through 13 games since coming off the IL with four doubles, one homer, five RBI and six runs. If he continues to show he can be more than a short-side platoon option, Grissom could begin to push Adam Frazier aside at second base and stake a claim to the starting job.

Grissom is coming off a big weekend series in Kansas City, where he went 5-for-8 with three doubles and one run while starting in two of the three contests. Both of those starts came against left-handed pitching, and he'll remain in the lineup Monday while Chicago sends southpaw Anthony Kay to the bump. Grissom looks poised to continue holding down the short side of a platoon at the keystone with Adam Frazier.

Grissom has been on the injured list for the first few weeks of the season due to a sprained left wrist, but he's been playing rehab games in Triple-A since March 31. The 25-year-old logged a base hit in each of his nine minor-league contests, finishing his assignment 12-for-35 (.343) with five RBI and a run scored. Now fully healthy, he'll make his season debut at second base and bat sixth against the Reds on Saturday, though Oswald Peraza and Adam Frazier remain in the mix for playing time at the keystone. Grissom -- who will turn just 25 in January -- is out of minor-league options and will get a fresh start with the Angels. Most of Grissom's experience has come in the middle infield, but he's also handled third base, first base and left field.

Grissom lost the second base gig during spring training and has spent the entire 2025 season at Triple-A, where he owns a .270/.342/.441 slash line with 13 home runs, 48 RBI, 69 runs scored, nine stolen bases and a 37:73 BB:K across 418 trips to the plate. If he's able to get healthy, Grissom could be a candidate to join the Red Sox when rosters expand in September.
