Gore (8-10) earned the win Tuesday over the A's after allowing one run on five hits and four walks while striking out four over 5.1 innings.
Gore wasn't especially sharp, issuing four walks for a second consecutive start and needing 95 pitches (57 strikes) to get through 5.1 innings, but he limited the Athletics to a single run. That came in the third inning, when Lawrence Butler brought home Zack Gelof with a single to center. Gore departed when the Rangers had a comfortable lead, and the bullpen held on to give him his eighth win of the campaign. He's now allowed one run or zero in four of his last six appearances, and this outing lowered his ERA to 4.31. His next start should come over the weekend at home against the Rays.

For the season, he has a 4.45 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 154:51 K:BB through 139.2 innings over 26 starts. The strikeout upside is encouraging, and the Rangers will need Gore to stay sharp as they battle for a playoff spot. His next start is projected to be at home in a favorable matchup versus the Angels.

Gore hardly pitched well enough to deserve the victory, notably hitting three batters Saturday, but he received plenty of run support to get him off the hook. Although the 27-year-old southpaw has registered seven punchouts in three of his past four outings, he's given up at least five runs in each of those starts. Gore is putting together something of a bizarre campaign, holding a career-worst 4.80 ERA in spite of a career-best .236 opponent batting average as well as a 122:42 K:BB across 110.2 innings.

Gore will serve as the Rangers' starting pitcher against Houston on Sunday, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Gore last pitched Wednesday against the Angels, so he'll be working on only three days of rest. Texas manager Skip Schumaker said Saturday that Gore approached him and offered to take the mound in what was otherwise looking like it might be a bullpen game for the team. Gore tossed 90 pitches in his previous start, so he may have his workload monitored Sunday in the Rangers' final contest before the All-Star break. Given that Texas will then have four days off, Gore's start Sunday won't necessarily impact his usual slotting in the rotation.

Gore has allowed four or more runs in four of his last seven outings, taking a loss in each of those four instances. All five runs against the southpaw came in the second inning, highlighted by a three-run homer from David Fry, and Texas offense was never able to climb out of the hole. It's the first time since May 7 that Gore has been tagged for more than four runs, but since the beginning of June he's stumbled to a 4.92 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB over 34.2 innings. He'll look to get back on track in his next start, which is scheduled to come at home early next week against the Angels.
