Montgomery (elbow) allowed one run on five hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Round Rock on Saturday.
Montgomery built up to 75 pitches in his seventh rehab start, which he's hoping will be his final outing in the minors before coming off the 60-day injured list, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. Rangers manager Skip Schumaker wouldn't commit to Montgomery making his next appearance in the majors, however, as the Rangers presumably want to assess him during a bullpen session before deciding on his next step. Montgomery -- who has been on the shelf all season while recovering from March 2025 UCL surgery -- has turned in a 4.74 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB in 19 innings over his seven starts between Round Rock and Double-A Frisco.

The Rangers signed Montgomery (elbow) to a one-year, $1.25 million contract Wednesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
Montgomery had a hybrid UCL reconstruction last March but hopes to be major-league ready around the All-Star break. The 33-year-old had a disastrous 2024 season with the Diamondbacks after signing late in spring training, posting a 6.23 ERA over 25 appearances. He was terrific in 2023, however, which included starring for the Rangers down the stretch of the regular season and their run to the World Series. The two sides are hoping to recapture some of that magic in 2026.
The Brewers acquired Montgomery (elbow) and right-hander Shelby Miller (forearm) from the Diamondbacks on Thursday in exchange for a player to be named later, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery in late March, Montgomery will miss th rest of the season and likely a large chunk of the 2026 campaign. He's also set to become a free agent this winter, so the Brewers presumably agreed to pay at least some of the money remaining on his $22.5 million salary in order to acquire an impact relief arm in Miller at minimal cost in terms of prospect capital.

The left-hander is competing with Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson for the final spot in Arizona's rotation. Whatever happens, Montgomery will get one more Cactus League outing to build up his pitch count and could be ready for the first week of the regular season, if he's pitching at the back end of the rotation or if a team uses an off day to get by with four starters.
