The third week of the preseason means different things to different teams. Some use it to determine any remaining starting battles, some sprinkle in starters to get them game reps, some avoid using starters or notable players by any means necessary, while others focus predominantly on lower-end roster battles.
The teams still deciding top roster battles, naturally, will dominate headlines during the preseason. One team that has minimal expectations for the 2025 season but has received a lot of attention is the Browns, who face off with the Rams on Saturday. They recently named veteran Joe Flacco as the starter, but Cleveland used picks on rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders in April, traded for former first-round pick Kenny Pickett and also signed former Pro Bowler Tyler Huntley. Flacco will start Week 1 as well as this preseason game, but all eyes will be on the team's two rookies, especially Sanders, as he's the son of former Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Sanders will play after missing Cleveland's last preseason contest due to injury.
Another team that has unanswered questions at quarterback is the Saints. Last year, they used a fifth-round pick on Spencer Rattler, who started a handful of games due to injuries, especially to Derek Carr. Carr retired this offseason, and Rattler and 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener return to New Orleans. The Saints, who hired new head coach Kellen Moore, also drafted Tyler Shough in the second round out of Louisville. Rattler will start this game, and he also started the team's first preseason contest, while Shough started the second. New Orleans has yet to announce who will start Week 1 against the Cardinals, so Rattler and Shough can use Saturday against the Broncos as a final selling point to make their respective cases.
Bet Broncos-Saints and more at Caesars:
While the Saints and Broncos have some uneasiness at quarterback, the Seahawks have their starter settled. Sam Darnold joins Seattle after a Pro Bowl season in Minnesota. He's the team's unquestioned QB1, and after sitting out the Seahawks' first preseason game, he played last week against the Chiefs. Darnold won't play Saturday in Green Bay, but neither will his backup, Drew Lock. That opens the door for rookie Jalen Milroe to make a big impression. The third-round Alabama product will not only start against the Packers, but he will also play the entire game, adding a layer of intrigue to the Seattle-Green Bay game that wasn't there otherwise.
