  • Panthers' Christian McCaffrey: Missing first Week 10 practice

McCaffrey (shoulder) won't participate in Wednesday's practice, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Coach Matt Rhule gave McCaffrey the vague "day-to-day" label after the running back suffered a painful shoulder injury Sunday in the Panthers' 33-31 loss to the Chiefs. The outing was McCaffrey's first since Week 2, when he suffered a high-ankle sprain that sidelined him for the Panthers' next six games. While McCaffrey's shoulder issue doesn't yet look to be nearly as much of a concern, David Newton of ESPN.com notes that the 24-year-old is set to receive a second opinion on the injury, putting his availability for this weekend's game against the Buccaneers in doubt. McCaffrey will likely need to practice Thursday or Friday on at least a limited basis to have a realistic shot at playing against Tampa Bay, but if not, Mike Davis would step in as the Panthers' feature back.

  • Mike Boone RB | MIA

Vikings' Mike Boone: No carries for second straight game

Boone posted one tackle on 18 special-teams snaps, but he logged zero offensive snaps during Sunday's 34-20 win against the Lions.

The third-year back out of Cincinnati collected a combined four offensive touches between Weeks 5 and 6, with Dalvin Cook's inactive designation Oct. 18 against the Falcons due to a groin injury providing extra opportunity for the backup committee. With Cook returning to the fold after Minnesota's Week 7 bye, Boone hasn't fielded an offensive snap since. Boone remains the Vikings' No. 3 back behind Cook and Alexander Mattison heading into a Week 10 matchup against the Bears' 14th-ranked rush defense.

  • Justice Hill RB | BAL

Ravens' Justice Hill: Role exclusive to special teams

Hill collected three tackles on 17 special-teams snaps, registering zero carries or targets on three offensive plays during Sunday's 24-10 win against the Colts.

With rookie second-round draft choice J.K. Dobbins now a member of Baltimore's backfield, Hill has gone without a rush attempt in 2020 after fielding 58 during his debut NFL season out of Oklahoma State last year. After dealing with a thigh injury throughout much of September, Hill has made game appearances in Weeks 4, 6, 8 and 9 while registering five total tackles on special teams. His offensive role is likely to remain obsolete, barring an injury ahead of him on the RB depth chart.

  • Royce Freeman RB | CHI

Broncos' Royce Freeman: One offensive snap against Falcons

Freeman did not garner a single rush attempt or target during Sunday's 34-27 loss to the Falcons, fielding one offensive snap and 22 special-teams snaps.

The third-year back has gone without an offensive touch in consecutive outings, after collecting 14 combined carries and four receptions over three outings between Weeks 4 and 7. With Melvin Gordon and Phillip Lindsay posing a formidable duo atop Denver's backfield, Freeman's offensive role figures to remain relatively remote in closely contested games. Freeman will slot in as the Broncos' third-string running back heading into a Week 10 matchup against the division rival Raiders.

  • Chiefs' Darwin Thompson: No offensive snaps against Panthers

Thompson played zero offensive snaps and 12 special-teams snaps during Sunday's 33-31 win against Carolina.

The usually strong Kansas City ground attack managed only 30 team rushing yards against the Panthers, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire (five carries) and Le'Veon Bell (four carries) being the only running backs involved. Darrel Williams did not have a rushing role, but he did post one catch in the contest at least, relegating Thompson to the No. 4 spot in the KC backfield at the moment.

  • Ameer Abdullah RB | JAC

Vikings' Ameer Abdullah: Scores TD against Lions

Abdullah had one reception for a 22-yard touchdown in Sunday's win over Detroit.

Abdullah played just one snap on offense and he's had just two receptions all season (along with two carries), so we wouldn't read too much into this touchdown. Abdullah is fourth on the RB depth chart and will only be a significant factor if both Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison are sidelined.

  • Melvin Gordon RB | BAL

Broncos' Melvin Gordon: Court date pushed back

Gordon's court date for his Oct. 13 arrest on DUI and speeding charges has been moved from Friday to Dec. 14 at the request of his attorney, Mike Klis of 9News Denver reports.

Based on the recent NFL precedent for players who have faced similar charges, Gordon is likely to face a three-game suspension, but the league isn't expected to levy punishment on the running back until the legal process is resolved. With that in mind, it's possible that any potential suspension Gordon might face relating to his arrest may not have to be served until 2021. As Klis notes, the Broncos will have three games left on the schedule following Gordon's Dec. 14 court date.

  • Chiefs' Darrel Williams: Snares lone target

Williams hauled in his only target in Sunday's game versus Carolina.

Despite seeing the field for double-digit snaps (18) for the first time since Week 6, Williams was unable to piece together much of a noteworthy stat line. That's not too surprising given that most of his work comes on passing downs and the Chiefs have a number of star targets in that department who will get looked to first. It's certainly a positive sign but Williams still remains third on the running back depth chart behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Le'Veon Bell for consistent running back reps.

  • Joshua Kelley RB | TEN

Chargers' Joshua Kelley: Leads backfield in snaps

Kelley carried the ball nine times for 28 yards during Sunday's 31-26 loss to the Raiders. He also caught all five of his targets for 31 yards.

Even with the Chargers offense missing two of its essential players, Justin Jackson (knee, injured in first quarter) and Austin Ekeler (hamstring), Kelley did not put up the numbers that some would have expected. While Kelley was unsuccessful in making it to the end zone, he did have the highest number of snaps (43) among running backs and tied for his season high in snaps as well. Still, it wasn't enough to surpass Saturday's practice-squad callup, Kalen Ballage, who dramatically took advantage of the opportunities vacated by Jackson's injury to the tune of 84 total yards and a team-high 15 carries in the loss. It's clear Kelley has a defined role within the rushing attack, though the rookie is essentially locked into a second-fiddle role to whoever is healthy among the group of Ekeler, Jackson, Troymaine Pope (concussion) and now Ballage. There's likely too much uncertainty regarding the Chargers' injured backs to know who will be the leading rusher this Sunday, but it's becoming clear Kelley won't be the answer.

  • Jets' La'Mical Perine: Gets eight touches

Perine rushed six times for 19 yards and caught both of his targets for 19 yards in Monday night's 30-27 loss to the Patriots.

Perine's longest gain went for 11 yards, as he again split time with Frank Gore in New York's backfield. Overall, though, Gore's 12 rushes for 46 yards and two grabs for 13 more lent slightly more value than that from Perine's touches. Still, with neither player really separating himself from the other, it's likely the Jets continue with their tailback rotation when they return from their Week 10 bye, capping the already-mild upside of both options.
