  • Chiefs' Jerick McKinnon: Misses practice

McKinnon missed Wednesday's practice due to a strained hamstring, Nate Taylor of The Athletic reports.

Consider McKinnon, who is listed behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the Chiefs' unofficial depth chart, day-to-day in advance of Saturday's preseason game against Washington. As long as McKinnon is sidelined, Ronald Jones and rookie Isiah Pacheco should see added opportunities to make their cases for slotting in the team's backfield ahead of Week 1.

  • Joshua Kelley RB | TEN

Chargers' Joshua Kelley: Leading No. 2 back competition

Kelley has seen more first-team work than fellow running backs Isaiah Spiller and Larry Rountree at training camp, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Kelley, Spiller and Rountree are competing for the No. 2 job behind starter Austin Ekeler, who is coming off a career year in which he played between 60 and 66 percent of the team's offensive snaps on each of first, second and third down in the 16 games in which he suited up. Kelley, Rountree and Justin Jackson all had shots to spell Ekeler last year, rotating through the No. 2 role without much success. The highlight for the group came Week 16, when Jackson went for 162 total yards and two touchdowns in a fill-in start, but he's now with the Lions. Kelley has averaged only 3.2 yards per carry and 6.6 yards per reception on 144 career totes and 28 catches, but he started the preseason strong with six touches for 44 yards in a loss to the Rams last Saturday. Between that and his work in camp, Kelley seems to have an early lead for the No. 2 spot, though Spiller remains the upside fantasy play of the bunch.

  • Steelers' Master Teague: Dealing with minor injury

Teague suffered an ankle injury during practice Tuesday, Joe Rutter of Triblive.com reports.

Teague's injury isn't expected to be serious and he's considered day to day. The undrafted rookie, who originally signed with the Bears, rushed for 31 yards on six carries in the Steelers' preseason win over the Seahawks on Saturday.

  • Seahawks' Kenneth Walker: Dealing with hernia issue

Coach Pete Carroll said Walker didn't practice Tuesday due to "a little hernia issue," Curtis Crabtree of Sports Radio 950 KJR Seattle reports.

On the same day that Rashaad Penny (groin) got back on the practice field, Walker wasn't present for drills. Carroll didn't provide much more information about the reason for Walker's absence, but it may impact his availability for Thursday's preseason game versus the Bears. If Walker is unable to suit up, Penny, Travis Homer, DeeJay Dallas, Darwin Thompson and Josh Johnson would compose the Seahawks backfield.

  • Rashaad Penny RB | CAR

Seahawks' Rashaad Penny: Back on practice field

Penny (groin) returned to practice Tuesday, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times reports.

The Seahawks held Penny out of Saturday's exhibition opener at Pittsburgh due to a minor groin injury, but as he got back on the field Tuesday he took handoffs in individual work before notching a 40-yard carry once team drills kicked off, per Condotta. While his issues staying healthy are well known, Penny will continue his quest to be the Seahawks' No. 1 running back to begin the season, with rookie second-round pick Kenneth Walker his primary competition.

  • Max Borghi RB | PIT

    Max Borghi: Waived by Denver

The Broncos waived Borghi on Tuesday, Troy Renck of Denver 7 News reports.

Borghi participated with the Broncos during rookie minicamp but didn't earn a contract until the start of August, when Damarea Crockett (knee) tore his ACL. The undrafted product out of Washington State will have to look elsewhere for a new NFL opportunity, but he posted 880 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns during his senior season in 2021 so he may garner some interest from around the league.

  • Jordan Wilkins RB | CLE

Jordan Wilkins: Let go by Tennessee

The Titans released Wilkins on Tuesday, Turron Davenport of ESPN.com reports.

Wilkins ended last season on the Titans' practice squad and signed a contract with Tennessee in March, but he's among the first wave of cuts ahead of Tuesday's 85-man roster deadline. The 2018 fifth-round pick played just one offensive snap across five appearances -- split between Indianapolis and Tennessee -- last year after rushing for at least 300 yards and one touchdown in each of his first three seasons in the NFL with the Colts.

  • Jake Bargas RB | NO

    Jake Bargas: Waived by Vikings

The Vikings waived Bargas on Tuesday, Craig Peters of the Vikings' official site reports.

Bargas signed with Minnesota back in May after spending each of the past two seasons on the team's practice squad. The 25-year-old fullback played in just one game last season, logging five snaps on special teams. Bargas will now look to make a roster for another team looking for help at the fullback position.

  • Bears' David Montgomery: Thursday's status uncertain

Montgomery (undisclosed) will likely see six-to-10 plays in Thursday's game against the Seahawks if he's able to take the field Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports.

Montgomery missed last week's game but did return to practice Monday, though his status has yet to be updated for Thursday. Should he play, coach Matt Eberflus said that some guys will get 20 plays, so his playing time could vary.

  • Commanders' Antonio Gibson: Practicing with special teams units

Gibson took snaps with the punt return team at Tuesday's practice, Sam Fortier of The Washington Post reports.

Fortier adds that Gibson's spot on the unit (slot protector) has mostly been handled by rookie Brian Robinson, the third-round pick who shined in the preseason opener with the first-team offense after Gibson lost a fumble on the second drive. There had already been talk of Robinson stealing short-yardage work prior to training camp, and it now seems the rookie has a shot at more than that. Fortier notes that Tuesday's practice was an odd one for Gibson, as he got special teams work and took some third-team offense snaps during a drill but then finished things out with the first-team offense during install. While it's premature to declare his starting job lost, Gibson will be one of the top players to monitor for the rest of the summer, including this Saturday in a preseason matchup with Kansas City.
