  • De'Von Achane RB | MIA

Dolphins' De'Von Achane: Practicing in non-contact jersey

Achane (shoulder) is taking part in practice Wednesday while sporting a red non-contact jersey, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

The fact that Achane hasn't been cleared to take contact isn't ideal but at least puts the rookie a step ahead of Jeff Wilson (undisclosed) and Salvon Ahmed (head), both of whom missed Wednesday's practice entirely. All three still have a week and a half to get ready for the Dolphins' Sept. 10 season opener against the Chargers, though it's difficult to discern what the backfield roles will look like apart from Raheem Mostert serving as the starter. Achane, a third-round pick, was deemed week-to-week with a shoulder injury following his early exit from an Aug. 19 preseason game against Houston. Wilson has been out for even longer, since Aug. 9, while Ahmed's injury is much more recent.

  • Jeff Wilson RB | MIA

Dolphins' Jeff Wilson: Absent from practice

Wilson (undisclosed) isn't practicing Wednesday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.

Neither is Salvon Ahmed (head), while De'Von Achane (shoulder) is sporting a non-contact jersey. Oft-injured Raheem Mostert and undrafted rookie Chris Brooks are the only healthy running backs on the Dolphins' initial 53-man roster, though at least one or two of Wilson, Achane or Ahmed should be ready for the team's Sept. 10 season opener versus the Chargers. Wilson has been absent from practice since an early exit Aug. 9, with head coach Mike McDaniel thus far declining to provide details on the injury.

  • Ravens' Keaton Mitchell: May be candidate for IR

Mitchell (shoulder) has secured a spot on Baltimore's initial 53-man roster but is a candidate to be placed on injured reserve, Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic reports.

If Mitchell is forced to IR, he would be ineligible to play in any of the first four games of the season. He injured his shoulder in the second week of the preseason shortly after breaking off a 31-yard run, and while he was spotted at practice just a few days later, the Ravens might find that he's still banged up enough to require an IR stint. The Ravens have three healthy veterans -- J.K. Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill -- atop their backfield depth chart to start the season, with Mitchell nabbing the fourth spot over 30-year-old Melvin Gordon and fellow undrafted rookie Owen Wright. Mitchell is considerably smaller than all of them, but he ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash this spring after piling up 2,584 rushing yards and 505 receiving yards over his final two seasons at East Carolina.

  • Zander Horvath RB | MIA

Zander Horvath: Let go by Chargers

Horvath was waived by the Chargers on Wednesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

Horvath was waived to make room for newly signed linebacker Tanner Muse. The fullback made 15 appearances for the Chargers as a rookie in 2022, carrying four times for eight yards and adding five receptions for eight yards and two touchdowns.

  • Elijah Dotson RB | ATL

Chargers' Elijah Dotson: Stays on 53-man roster

Dotson made Los Angeles' 53-man roster Tuesday, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.

The multi-positional athlete tallied 146 yards on 18 carries across three preseason games, but it's likely his utility as a special teams asset that ultimately helped the undrafted rookie land a spot on active roster. The Chargers opted to keep four running backs at this juncture with Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley and Isaiah Spiller all figuring to see more offensive snaps if the roster remains unchanged entering Week 1.

  • Xazavian Valladay: Jumps to Jets' practice squad

Valladay signed with the Jets' practice squad Wednesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Valladay was waived by the Steelers on Wednesday but it looks like the Jets had their eye on the Arizona State product as a developmental prospect. He's unlikely to suit up for Gang Green in 2023 considering New York already has Breece Hall (knee), Dalvin Cook, Michael Carter and Israel Abanikanda (thigh) on the roster.

  • Breece Hall RB | NYJ

Jets' Breece Hall: May be limited early in year

The Jets plan to make Hall (knee) active Week 1 against Buffalo but may be cautious with his workloads early in the season, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Hall returned to practice in mid-August and has been taking full reps for two weeks, putting him on track to play when the Jets host the Bills on Sept. 11. It isn't entirely clear he'll start or even lead the team in Week 1 carries, as the Jets recently signed Dalvin Cook and still have Michael Carter on hand to handle some passing situations. Hall will eventually be the lead runner but may first be part of a committee as he returns from last year's ACL tear.

  • Dalvin Cook RB | DAL

Jets' Dalvin Cook: Healthy heading into Week 1

Cook (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Tuesday and declared himself healthy ahead of the Jets' Sept. 11 regular-season opener against the Bills, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

Cook's ongoing recovery from February shoulder surgery coupled with a trip to Florida for the birth of his child delayed his practice debut with the Jets, but he told the media after Tuesday's practice that he did "everything" and is fully healthy heading into the season. Breece Hall (knee) has also been making progress in his recovery, but Cook is expected to get more touches than Hall in the season opener while the Jets ease the second-year back into game action as he returns from a torn ACL. Both running backs are expected to be key contributors for the team's new-look offense in 2023.

  • Travis Dye RB | NYJ

    Travis Dye: Waived by Jets

The Jets waived Dye on Tuesday, Randy Lange of the Jets' official site reports.

Dye joined the Jets as an undrafted free agent in early May but was unable to carve out a spot on the 53-man roster. It's possible he lands on a practice squad in 2023.

  • Myles Gaskin RB | SEA

Vikings' Myles Gaskin: Links up with Minnesota

Gaskin agreed to a contact with the Vikings on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Cut by Miami a day earlier, Gaskin lands on his feet with a team that has minimal experience in the backfield behind Alexander Mattison. The Vikings also kept Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu (undisclosed) on their initial 53-man roster, but the latter's presence may be about his special teams prowess than what he can contribute as a running back. Gaskin started 17 of his 27 games for Miami between 2020 and 2021, averaging a 158-598-3 rushing line (3.8 yards per carry) and 45-311-3 receiving line (5.7 yards per target) over that two-season stretch.
