  • Nationals' Julian Fernandez: Summoned to big leagues

The Nationals recalled Fernandez from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.

Fernandez was claimed off waivers in August and will now receive his first major-league opportunity since joining the Nationals organization. The 29-year-old has spent most of the season at the Triple-A level, where he's held a 4.17 ERA and 67:18 K:BB over 54 frames.

  • Mason Thompson RP | TEX

Nationals' Mason Thompson: Shelved with biceps tendinitis

The Nationals placed Thompson on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right biceps tendinitis.

The injury will end Thompson's season, though he should have a normal offseason, barring any setbacks. Thompson struggled mightily in 10.2 innings out of the Nationals' bullpen in 2025, finishing with an 11.81 ERA and 11:21 K:BB.

  • MacKenzie Gore SP | TEX

Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Ankle injury ends season

The Nationals placed Gore on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right ankle impingement.

Gore suffered an ankle injury earlier this season, although it's not clear whether this is an aggravation of that injury. Either way, his season is now over. The left-hander had an up-and-down 2025 campaign, finishing with a 4.17 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 185:64 K:BB over 159.2 innings covering 30 starts.

  • Kyle Tucker RF | LAD

Cubs' Kyle Tucker: Does some running Monday

Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said Tuesday that Tucker (calf) did some running Monday and has returned to Chicago after rehabbing in Florida, 670 The Score reports.

Hoyer added that Tucker is "moving in the right direction" and he hopes the outfielder can return to the active roster "for a few games" before the end of the regular season. Tucker has been out for most of September with a left calf strain and has struggled to make positive strides with his recovery. His return doesn't appear imminent, and if Tucker does make it back later this week, it will likely be in a limited capacity.

  • Shohei Ohtani DH | LAD

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Pegged for rotation in postseason

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said that Ohtani will be used as a starting pitcher in the playoffs, in addition to his designated-hitter duties, Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com reports.

The Dodgers discussed the possibility of using Ohtani as a reliever in the postseason and have even mulled deploying him some in the outfield so he could stay in the game as a hitter after he was done pitching in relief. However, they've ultimately decided Ohtani will be a member of their playoff rotation. Ohtani could even start Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series, as he'll be tentatively lined up for it after making his final regular-season start Tuesday in Arizona. The two-way superstar holds a 3.29 ERA and 54:9 K:BB over 41 innings covering 13 starts this season and went five hitless frames versus the Phillies in his last outing.

  • Ronny Simon 2B | PIT

Pirates' Ronny Simon: Moved to 60-day IL

The Pirates transferred Simon (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Tuesday.

The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Hunter Barco. It was announced previously that Simon will undergo surgery in October to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

  • Evan Sisk RP | PIT

Pirates' Evan Sisk: Sent back to minors

The Pirates optioned Sisk to Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

He's being replaced on the roster by Hunter Barco. Sisk has made 19 relief appearances in the majors this season between the Royals and Pirates, posting a 3.57 ERA and 25:10 K:BB over 17.2 frames.

  • Hunter Barco P | PIT

Pirates' Hunter Barco: Called up to majors

The Pirates selected Barco's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday.

Barco has had an excellent season between Double-A Altoona and Indianapolis, collecting a 2.81 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 116:49 K:BB across 99.1 innings. The left-hander had been pitching mostly in relief lately with Indianapolis, and the Pirates are likely to break him in as a reliever at the big-league level.

  • Giants' Rafael Devers: Cracks homer in defeat

Devers went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Monday's 6-5 loss to the Cardinals.

Devers launched his 33rd homer of the season to left-center field in the fifth inning, scoring the final run of the game. The 28-year-old has been slumping in September and hasn't delivered a multi-hit performance since Sept. 5. Over his last 16 games, Devers is batting .138 with nine runs scored, seven RBI and two long balls across 69 plate appearances. Overall, he's slashing .252/.371/.473 with 106 RBI, 95 runs scored, 31 doubles and a stolen base in 706 plate appearances over 158 games between San Francisco and Boston this season.

  • Giants' Carson Whisenhunt: Fans two in rehab game

Whisenhunt (back) allowed one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out two across three innings in Triple-A Sacramento's 4-2 loss to Round Rock on Sunday.

Whisenhunt was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 31 due to a back strain but appears to be nearing a return to the big leagues. He made his first rehab appearance against Round Rock last Tuesday, giving up three runs (two earned) over 1.2 innings while tossing 25 of his 39 pitches for strikes. The left-hander stretched out slightly Sunday, throwing 46 pitches (30 strikes). If the 24-year-old returns to the majors ahead of the regular-season finale Sunday, he'll likely replace Trevor McDonald or Kai-Wei Teng in the rotation.
