Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Dealing with sore knee

Gonzalez was taken out of Tuesday's game versus the Athletics due to left knee soreness, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

Gonzalez's knee forced him to make an early exit in the second inning, but not before he blasted a leadoff home run in the first frame and an RBI double in the second. The severity of the 29-year-old's injury remains unknown, keeping the door open for David Hamilton or Nick Sogard to pick up reps at the keystone in the near future.

  • Griffin Jax RP | TB

    Rays' Griffin Jax: Opening Wednesday

Jax will serve as the Rays' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the White Sox, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.

With Ryan Pepiot unavailable for his scheduled start Wednesday due to fatigue, the Rays will turn to Jax to lead off what's expected to be a bullpen game. The 30-year-old right-hander has given up eight earned runs in just 12 innings since being acquired from the Twins at the trade deadline and isn't expected to pitch past the first inning during what will be his second opening assignment in seven days.

Rays' Ryan Pepiot: Battling fatigue, will miss start

Pepiot was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the White Sox due to fatigue, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.

Pepiot has gone three consecutive starts (15 innings) without giving up an earned run and has conceded just two hits and six walks while striking out 15 batters in that span. He'll need at least a few days before he takes the mound again, however, and the Rays haven't specified how much extra rest he will require. Tampa Bay will instead lean on its bullpen Wednesday and send out Griffin Jax to record the first few outs.

  • Romy Gonzalez 2B | BOS

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Lifted early Tuesday

Gonzalez was removed from Tuesday's game against the Athletics with an apparent injury, Tim Healey of The Boston Globe reports.

It's unclear what kind of injury Gonzalez is dealing with that forced him to leave Tuesday's game in the second inning, but the Red Sox should provide some clarity in the near future. The 29-year-old had already had a productive evening before being pulled, going 2-for-2 with a solo homer and an RBI double. Although he started at first base Tuesday, additional absences for Gonzalez would likely result in increased playing time at second for Nick Sogard and David Hamilton.

  • Royals' Jonathan Bowlan: Opening Wednesday's contest

Bowlan will serve as the Royals' opening pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Guardians, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

The Royals are seemingly going to rely on their bullpen to get through Wednesday's contest, and they'll start by sending out Bowlan for the first handful of outs. The 28-year-old owns a 3.57 ERA and 1.13 WHIP through 35.1 innings on the season and has five appearances of at least two innings, so there's a chance he remains in Wednesday's contest past the first frame before getting the hook.

  • Orioles' Jeremiah Jackson: Exits after HBP

Jackson was removed from Tuesday's game against the Pirates after getting hit on his right elbow by a pitch, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.

Jackson took a 95.5-mph pitch off his elbow in the eighth inning and was immediately taken out of the game in favor of a pinch runner. The severity of the outfielder's injury will come into focus once Baltimore's trainers examine him further, but it's possible he sits out a game or two at the very least as a precaution.

  • Jo Adell RF | LAA

Angels' Jo Adell: Late scratch Tuesday

Adell (illness) was scratched from the lineup ahead of Tuesday's game versus Minnesota, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Adell was pulled from Sunday's contest after experiencing a bout of vertigo, and he'll now miss a second consecutive start while he continues to recover. Chris Taylor will step in as the Angels' starting right fielder and bat fifth.

  • Luis Garcia SP | NYY

Astros' Luis Garcia: Exits with elbow trouble Tuesday

Garcia was removed from his start Tuesday against the Blue Jays with right elbow discomfort, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Garcia made it through just 1.2 innings before calling for a trainer to come take a look at him, and he was removed after a very brief discussion with the Astros' staff. More details regarding his injury won't be known until the team takes a closer look at him, though it's worth noting that the right-hander's velocity was down for the duration of his start.

  • Jo Adell RF | LAA

Angels' Jo Adell: Good to go Tuesday

Adell (illness) is starting in right field and batting fifth Tuesday against the Twins, Erica Weston of Bally Sports West reports.

The 26-year-old was scratched from Monday's starting nine due to an illness but is back in action for Tuesday's contest. Adell has carried a hot bat to begin September, as he's batting .407 (11-for-27) with five homers and 12 RBI through seven games.

  • Connelly Early SP | BOS

Red Sox's Connelly Early: Contract selected

The Red Sox selected Early's contract from Triple-A Worcester ahead of his start Tuesday versus the Athletics.

After posting a 2.60 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 100.1 innings between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, Early will be thrust into the MLB rotation as the replacement for Dustin May (elbow). Early, 23, most recently pitched six innings of one-run ball while punching out 10 batters at Worcester, but he'll be challenged in his MLB debut Tuesday while facing an Athletics lineup that's posted an .823 OPS since the beginning of the month.
