  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Sent back to Triple-A

The Yankees optioned Jones to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Friday's 5-2 win over the Twins. Jones slashed .265/.345/.469 with two home runs, five RBI and six runs scored across 55 plate appearances upon being recalled from Triple-A on June 5. Despite his strong numbers, he'll end up as the odd man out in the New York outfield after Trent Grisham (hamstring) was reinstated from the injured list prior to Friday's game. Jones will get the opportunity to play regularly at Triple-A, and he'll likely rank as the top option for a call-up if the Yankees have an opening at designated hitter or in the outfield.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Not in lineup Friday

Jones (illness) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Twins. Though Jones is out of the lineup for a second straight game, he appears to have recovered from the bout with food poisoning that kept him from starting in Wednesday's 6-2 loss to the Tigers in 11 innings. He was able to make an appearance off the bench, going 1-for-2 while playing three innings in center field. With the Yankees bringing Trent Grisham (hamstring) back from the injured list Friday, Jones could have difficulty finding regular playing time versus right-handed pitching. The rookie has slashed .233/.317/.370 with two home runs, one steal, seven RBI, six runs scored and a 9:34 BB:K across 82 plate appearances at the big-league level this season.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Out Wednesday due to food poisoning

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Jones is recovering from food poisoning and is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. A stomach bug seems to be making its way around the Yankees clubhouse, as Boone acknowledged that Ryan McMahon (throat infection) won't play in a rehab game Wednesday as planned after also coming down with the same ailment, per Hoch. The Yankees are off Thursday, so with two days to rest up and recuperate from the stomach illness, Jones could be ready to play in Friday's series opener versus the Twins.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Sitting against southpaw

Jones is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. Jones hit just .167 while striking out at a 44.4 percent clip during a 10-game stint in the majors back in May, but he's gotten off to a nice start since receiving another call-up to New York last week after Aaron Judge's (rib) placement on the injured list. In his four games (three starts) upon rejoining the Yankees, Jones has gone 6-for-12 with two extra-base hits (one home run, one double) and an 0:4 BB:K. The Yankees will hold the left-handed-hitting Jones out of the lineup Wednesday while southpaw Parker Messick takes the hill for Cleveland, but the 25-year-old rookie should be in line for an extended run as a starter versus right-handed pitching so long as he can hit for power and get on base at a steady rate.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Summoned back to big leagues

The Yankees will recall Jones from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday to take the roster spot of the injured Aaron Judge (ribs), Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Jones will likely head back to the minors once Jasson Dominguez (shoulder) or Giancarlo Stanton (calf) returns, but Jones should receive at least a week or so of regular playing time with the big club. The young outfielder struggled in his first stint in the majors earlier this year, going 4-for-24 with no home runs and a 3:12 BB:K.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Not starting against righty

Jones is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. Jones is just 3-for-20 with 11 strikeouts early on in his first stint in the big leagues, and he's now started only two of the last five contests. Ben Rice is getting a start at designated hitter Wednesday, and Paul Goldschmidt will cover first base for the Bronx Bombers.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Batting sixth in MLB debut

Jones is batting sixth as the designated hitter in his major-league debut Friday against the Brewers. The 24-year-old was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre earlier Friday and is expected to see opportunities against right-handed pitching due to Giancarlo Stanton (calf) and Jasson Dominguez (shoulder) being on the shelf. Jones has continued to showcase his power and speed at Triple-A early this year with 11 homers and seven steals in 33 games, but his 32.4 percent strikeout rate remains a red flag in his profile.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Concluding spring on high note

Jones went 2-for-2 with a pair of home runs and three total RBI in an exhibition loss to the Cubs on Monday. Jones didn't start, but he still made a big splash after entering as a defensive replacement in the fifth inning. The young slugger belted a solo homer in his first plate appearance and added a two-run shot in his second. Jones leads the Yankees with six long balls and 11 RBI during the exhibition slate, and he's posted a sensational 1.621 OPS over 12 games. He'll begin the campaign at Triple-A, but there's a good chance he'll make his regular-season big-league debut at some point in 2026.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Rejoins Triple-A lineup

Jones (back) started in right field and went 2-for-4 with a double and a run in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 7-3 loss to Nashville on Tuesday. Jones was out of action for four days due to back spasms but didn't miss a beat in his return to the lineup, contributing his 19th extra-base hit in 20 games with the Triple-A club. With a 1.399 OPS since receiving a promotion to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre from Double-A Somerset on June 27, Jones is making a compelling case for a big-league call-up, but the Yankees don't have an obvious spot for him in their crowded outfield, even while Aaron Judge (elbow) is on the injured list.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Dealing with back spasms

Jones (back) is not in the starting lineup for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday, Jack Curry of YES Network reports. Jones won't be in Friday's lineup but could be back Saturday depending on how his back feels. The 24-year-old prospect was bumped up to Triple-A in late June and has raced out to a strong start with a 1.407 OPS with six steals, 13 home runs and 25 RBI in 94 plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Belts three homers in Triple-A game

Jones went 3-for-5 with three home runs and four RBI for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday. Jones mashed homers in the first, third and fifth innings to continue a recent power surge. He's gone deep 10 times in his past 12 contests and has posted an absurd 1.407 OPS with 13 home runs, 25 RBI and six stolen bases over 19 contests since being promoted to Triple-A on June 27. Jones has also struck out 24 times during that span, but that's an improvement over the 33.7 percent K rate he posted in Double-A prior to his promotion. If Jones keeps mashing, he could get his first taste of the big leagues before the end of the campaign, though he could also draw interest in trade talks leading up to the deadline.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Goes yard in Triple-A debut

Jones went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 4-2 win over Worcester on Friday. Jones was promoted to Triple-A before Friday's contest, and it didn't take long for him to make an impact, as he smacked a solo homer to center field in his first plate appearance. He did strike out in two of his other plate appearances, and that is an area the 24-year-old prospect will need to work on as he shifts his focus toward a promotion to the majors.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Returns to minor-league action

Jones (intercostal) was activated from Double-A Somerset's 7-day injured list Thursday. Jones had been out of action since May 3 due to an intercostal injury. In his first game off the IL, the young slugger went 2-for-3 with a double, a run, an RBI and a stolen base for Somerset. Jones has flashed both power and speed in the minors so far this season, tallying nine homers and seven stolen bases over just 27 games. However, he's batting a modest .242, and strikeouts remain a problem given his 35.3 percent K rate.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Out with intercostal injury

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Jones was placed on Double-A Somerset's 7-day injured list May 6 due to an intercostal injury, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Jones produced a .228/.372/.554 slash line with nine home runs and six stolen bases across 113 plate appearances before landing on the IL earlier this month. The outfield prospect has already spent the minimum seven days on the shelf, but Boone acknowledged he was uncertain when Jones might be ready to be activated.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Reassigned to minors camp

The Yankees reassigned Jones to minor-league camp Tuesday. Jones has clubbed a pair of home runs while putting up a .996 OPS this spring but has also struck out 11 times in 25 plate appearances, showcasing both the good and the bad parts of his game. The 23-year-old will look to make strides in the plate discipline department in 2025 and could move up to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after spending the 2024 campaign at Double-A Somerset.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Continues impressive spring

Jones went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, three total runs and four total RBI in Saturday's Spring Breakout game against the Blue Jays. The inaugural Spring Breakout showcase is intended to highlight each team's best prospects, and Jones certainly made his presence known with his pair of blasts Saturday. It's been a standout spring overall for the 22-year-old, who is slashing .412/.524/.647 with a home run, four RBI, seven runs and a 3:3 BB:K over 11 contests in the regular Grapefruit League slate. Jones is slated to begin the regular season in Double-A ball, but he could reach the big leagues by the end of the campaign if he continues to impress in the minors.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Gets spring-training invitation

The Yankees have invited Jones to participate in major-league spring training, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Jones is considered one of New York's top hitting prospects after he slashed .267/.336/.444 with 16 home runs, 66 RBI and 43 stolen bases between High-A and Double-A last season. The 22-year-old was selected by the Yankees 25th overall in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft and hasn't taken long to impress members of the organization. While he'll get a chance to display his skills against big leaguers during spring training, Jones is almost certain to begin the campaign back in Double-A and may not reach the majors until 2025, though there's a chance he gets his first cup of coffee late in the upcoming campaign.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Over 20 steals at High-A

Jones is hitting .263 with a .356 OBP, three home runs, 10 steals and a 27.4 percent strikeout rate in his last 30 games for High-A Hudson Valley. Jones is having a strong statistical year, slashing .263/.330/.470 with 10 home runs and 21 steals, but given that he turned 22 in May, he's simply meeting expectations against High-A pitching. His strikeouts are down slightly and his walks are trending up over the past month, but we should learn much more about the viability of his hit tool when he is facing age-appropriate pitching at Double-A.

  • Yankees' Spencer Jones: Popping in minors

Jones has hit .352/.416/.550 with four home runs and 12 steals through 24 minor-league games, most of which have come at Single-A Tampa. The No. 25 overall pick in this year's draft, Jones has long been compared to Yankees superstar Aaron Judge, and it's hard not to see some similarities between the two 6-foot-7, power-hitting, nimble-footed Californians. (It gets even eerier when you look at their college stats.) At 21, Jones is a little on the older side for the Florida State League, but he's doing everything you could possibly ask for from a 2022 draftee. Don't sleep on him; as a college bat, he could move quickly through the organization.
