  • Giants' Brandon Crawford: Sitting again vs. left-hander

Crawford is out of the lineup for Monday's opener against the Cardinals, Danny Emerman of KNBR 680 San Francisco reports.

Crawford has been getting nights off against left-handers often in 2023 and Monday won't be an exception with Jordan Montgomery on the hill for the Cardinals. Thairo Estrada will handle shortstop duties in Crawford's absence.

  • Joey Wendle 2B | ATL

Marlins' Joey Wendle: Goes through full workout

Wendle (intercostal) went through a full workout Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Wendle looks to be game-ready at this point as he works his way back from a right intercostal strain. The veteran infielder figures to need a few rehab games before being activated.

  • Javier Baez SS | DET

Tigers' Javier Baez: In Monday's lineup

Baez (finger) will start at shortstop and bat third Monday in Milwaukee.

Baez had to depart Sunday's loss to the Orioles due to swelling in his left middle finger, but he's back out there a day later. The veteran shortstop is off to a dreadful .203/.253/.246 start at the dish this season.

  • Josh H. Smith SS | TEX

Rangers' Josh Smith: Out against lefty again

Smith is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Reds.

The lefty-hitting Smith will give way to the righty-hitting Ezequiel Duran at shortstop with southpaw Nick Lodolo on the bump for Cincinnati. Smith has now been on the bench three times in four games, with all three absences coming when Texas has opposed left-handed starting pitchers.

  • Yu Chang SS | TB

Red Sox's Yu Chang: Getting call at shortstop again

Chang is starting at shortstop and batting ninth for the Red Sox on Monday in Baltimore, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Christian Arroyo is over his hamstring issue, but once again it will be Chang and Enrique Hernandez forming Boston's double-play combo. Chang has an .840 OPS with three home runs over his last seven games and could be the team's best defensive option at short.

  • Vaughn Grissom 2B | LAA

Braves' Vaughn Grissom: Sits after lackluster run of starts

Grissom is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins.

For the first time since being called up from Triple-A Gwinnett on April 14 in the wake of top shortstop Orlando Arcia (wrist) landing on the injured list, Grissom will get a day off. Ehire Adrianza will fill in at shortstop in place of Grissom, who slashed .273/.314/.303 with one extra-base hit (a double) and no stolen bases during his nine-game run in the starting lineup.

  • Otto Lopez SS | MIA

Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Added to taxi squad

Lopez has been added to the Blue Jays' taxi squad in the event Santiago Espinal (wrist) needs to miss time, Mitch Bannon of SI.com reports.

Lopez was one of the last spring training cuts by the Blue Jays but has gotten off to a slow start at Triple-A Buffalo with just a .476 OPS. The utility player has seen brief action in the majors each of the previous two seasons.

  • Noelvi Marte RF | CIN

Reds' Noelvi Marte: Slow start at Double-A

Marte is hitting .186 with one home run, four steals and a 17:7 K:BB in 15 games with Double-A Chattanooga.

While Marte has been a high-profile prospect since 2019, this is his first exposure to Double-A pitching and his first season as a primary third baseman, although he hasn't completely moved off shortstop yet. The slugging infielder hasn't gotten to much power yet (.119 ISO) and has been a bit unlucky (.244 BABIP), but his 25.4 percent strikeout rate and 10.4 percent walk rate are reasonable marks for a 21-year-old at Double-A.

  • Ronny Mauricio 2B | NYM

Mets' Ronny Mauricio: Transitioning to utility role

Mauricio played his first game at second base for Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

With Francisco Lindor locked in as the starting shortstop at the big-league level, Mauricio's path to the majors will have to come at another position -- or positions, as the Mets are potentially viewing the 22-year-old as a future utility player. "The plan is to move him around a little bit now," manager Buck Showalter said over the weekend. "It's to increase his versatility -- something he's good at." In addition to the keystone, Mauricio could see time at both infield corners and in the outfield at Triple-A as he works on his defensive flexibility, but his bat could be major-league ready right now. Through 21 games with Syracuse to begin 2023, he's slashing .350/.395/.688 with six homers, four steals, 16 runs and 16 RBI.

  • Jon Berti 3B | CHC

    Marlins' Jon Berti: Homers Sunday

Berti went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 7-4 loss to Cleveland.

Berti opened the scoring Sunday, smacking an opposite-field homer off Logan Allen to give Miami an early lead. It's Berti's second long ball of the year after he hit four in 358 at-bats last season. The reigning stolen-base champ is slashing .224/.264/.358 with seven RBI, nine runs scored and four steals. While Berti shouldn't be relied on as a reliable power source, he'll likely wind up near the top of the league in stolen bases again.
