Jared Jones SP | PIT
Pirates' Jared Jones: Aiming for mound work this weekend
Jones (lat) is hoping to be ready to throw a bullpen session by this weekend, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Jones threw on flat ground Tuesday for the second day in a row and on Wednesday he will throw off the front slope of the mound. If that goes well, it sounds like he could be cleared to begin throwing off a mound this weekend. Jones is working his way back from a Grade 2 right lat strain, an injury he suffered in early July.

Allan Winans SP | NYY
Braves' Allan Winans: Confirmed for start Wednesday
Atlanta manager Brian Snitker confirmed Tuesday that Winans will be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Wednesday versus the Reds, David O'Brien of The Athletic reports.
Winans is taking the rotation spot vacated by the injured Max Fried (forearm). Winans was rocked for seven runs (six earned) over five innings in a spot start with Atlanta earlier this season, but he boasts a 2.74 ERA and 75:22 K:BB across 82 frames in 2024 at Gwinnett. Winans might be needed for additional starts but will need to pitch well to continue seeing opportunities.

Christian Scott SP | NYM
Mets' Christian Scott: Lands on IL with sprained elbow
The Mets placed Scott on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a UCL sprain in his right elbow.
The severity of the sprain is not known at this time, but it's an injury that can lead to Tommy John surgery. Even if an operation isn't required, the young right-hander is likely to miss significant time. Scott has not been as sharp since rejoining the Mets' rotation earlier this month, posting a 5.49 ERA and 14:6 K:BB over 19.2 innings covering four starts. Kodai Senga (shoulder) is set to rejoin the rotation later this week, so the Mets could just revert to a standard five-man setup while Scott is out.

Allan Winans SP | NYY
Braves' Allan Winans: Expected to draw start Wednesday
Winans is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to start Wednesday against the Reds, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
Atlanta has an opening in its rotation with Max Fried (forearm) out and Winans was spotted at Truist Park on Tuesday, so it's not difficult to connect the dots. The right-hander was torched for seven runs (six earned) over five innings in a spot start with the big club earlier this season, but he's pitched well in 2024 with Gwinnett, holding a 2.74 ERA and 75:22 K:BB across 82 frames. Winans could earn additional starts with Atlanta if he pitches well.

Ryan Weathers SP | NYY
Marlins' Ryan Weathers: Begins playing catch
Weathers (finger) has been cleared to play catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
It's the first time he's done any throwing since going down with a left index finger strain back in early June. Given that he was shut down for more than six weeks, it's going to take a long time for Weathers to get ramped back up, but this was the first step. He's pitched well this season for the Marlins when healthy, posting a 3.55 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 67:20 K:BB through 71 innings.

Braxton Garrett SP | MIA
Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Resumes throwing program
Garrett (forearm) has began playing catch, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Garrett will finally resume a throwing program after being placed on the injured list June 23 with a strained left forearm. The 26-year-old was deemed asymptomatic last week but spent several days focusing on strengthening his forearm before starting to throw. Garrett still has several checkpoints to complete before being activated and shouldn't be expected back for several weeks.

Sandy Alcantara SP | MIA
Marlins' Sandy Alcantara: Throwing bullpen session Wednesday
Alcantara (elbow) will throw a bullpen session Wednesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
Alcantara began a throwing program back in March, but this will be his first time throwing off a mound since his October 2023 Tommy John surgery. He won't be back this season, but the Marlins anticipate the former Cy Young winner to be ready to roll heading into 2025.

Jordan Montgomery SP | TEX
Diamondbacks' Jordan Montgomery: Back from IL, starting Tuesday
The Diamondbacks reinstated Montgomery (knee) from the 15-day injured list to start Tuesday against the Royals, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.
The veteran left-hander has been on the shelf nearly a month due to right knee inflammation and is returning to Arizona's rotation without a minor-league rehab assignment. Montgomery threw 56 pitches in a simulated game Thursday and will likely face some minor workload limitations in his first couple starts back with the Diamondbacks.

Jared Jones SP | PIT
Pirates' Jared Jones: Tuesday's session on flat ground
Jones' (lat) throwing session Tuesday was from flat ground, not from the mound as previously indicated, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Destin had reported earlier that Jones was throwing a bullpen session, but he later issued a correction, noting it was a flat-ground throwing session from the Pirates' bullpen. While it means the right-hander isn't quite as far along as previously indicated, it's still good news that he is doing any kind of throwing for the second day in a row. Jones has been sidelined for most of July with a Grade 2 right lat strain.

Jared Jones SP | PIT
Pirates' Jared Jones: Throws bullpen session
Jones (lat) threw a bullpen session at PNC Park on Tuesday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Jones did some flat-ground throwing Monday and was then spotted progressing to mound work a day later, which is certainly a good sign as he works his way back from a Grade 2 lat strain. The Pirates will certainly proceed cautiously with the prized youngster, particularly since he was going to have his workload limited somewhat down the stretch, anyway, but this is a big step in his recovery.
