  • Blake Snell SP | LAD

Giants' Blake Snell: Career-high 15 Ks in no-decision

Snell recorded a career-high 15 strikeouts while giving up two hits two walks over six scoreless innings in a no-decision Saturday in the Giants' 4-1 win over the Rockies in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

The 15 strikeouts were one shy of the franchise record, and it was the most in a single game by a Giants pitcher since Tim Lincecum in 2009. In spite of the incredible performance, Snell was still denied his first win of the season, as he departed the game with a 1-0 lead before reliever Ryan Walker gave up the tying run to the Rockies in the top of the seventh inning. After a rough start to his tenure with the Giants, Snell has started to resemble the Cy Young Award-winning pitcher he was with the Padres in 2023. Over his four July starts, Snell has posted an 0.75 ERA, 0.63 WHIP and 30:7 K:BB in 24 innings. He's the first Giants pitcher since 1911 to record at least 30 strikeouts while allowing fewer than 10 hits in a four-game stretch.

  • Shota Imanaga RP | CHC

Cubs' Shota Imanaga: Falls just shy of quality start

Imanaga allowed three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on Saturday.

Imanaga yielded a solo homer to Hunter Renfroe in the second inning but entered the sixth with a three-run lead. However, he couldn't get out of that frame, as the Royals got to him for three hits, including a Bobby Witt run-scoring double. Another run crossed the plate after Imanaga's departure, and he had a streak of four straight quality starts snapped. The rookie right-hander carries a 2.95 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 111:17 K:BB along with an 8-2 record through 19 appearances covering 109.2 innings on the campaign.

  • Michael King SP | SD

Padres' Michael King: Strikes out nine in win

King (9-6) earned the win against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over 6.1 innings.

King cruised through six innings and was pulled at 101 pitches after allowing two baserunners in seventh. Both inherited runners came around to score, but the righty logged his third straight quality start and has yielded two or fewer earned runs in nine of his past 10 outings. On the season, he owns a 3.26 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 144:45 K:BB across 124.1 innings and lines up for a favorable home matchup with the Rockies next week.

  • Jared Jones SP | PIT

    Pirates' Jared Jones: Completes bullpen

Jones (lat) threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session Saturday and used all four of his pitches, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Jones threw off a mound for the first time since being placed on the injured list July 4 and was able to mix in all four of his pitches while his fastball sat between 93-95 miles per hour -- his usual bullpen velocity. Hiles notes that the right-hander will throw another bullpen during the Pirates' three-game series in Houston that starts Monday and face hitters after the road trip ends Thursday. It's unclear if Jones will require a rehab assignment.

  • Max Meyer SP | MIA

Marlins' Max Meyer: Officially called up

The Marlins recalled Meyer from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Saturday's game against the Brewers.

As expected, Meyer will make his fourth start of the 2024 season Saturday, and his first since April. While the Marlins have been keeping an eye on the 25-year-old's workload, there haven't been any confirmed restrictions placed on Meyer for Saturday's appearance. He's generated a 2.12 ERA in 17 innings with Miami this season.

  • Joe Musgrove SP | SD

Padres' Joe Musgrove: Could begin rehab stint next week

Musgrove (elbow) incorporated his full arsenal of breaking pitches in his most recent bullpen session and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week, per MLB.com.

Musgrove's bullpen Wednesday was significant not only because he brought breaking pitches into the mix, but also because he stepped up the intensity of his throwing. The right-hander has reported having no issues with his injured right elbow during his three bullpens to date, and the next step in his rehab could be a rehab stint with a minor-league squad. Should Musgrove continue to progress without setbacks, he could return to the Padres' rotation in early August.

  • Ty Blach SP | CHC

Rockies' Ty Blach: Departs 40-man roster

Colorado designated Blach for assignment Saturday, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports.

After moving back into the rotation and giving up six earned runs over 2.1 innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday, Blach shifted to the bullpen for the Rockies' series in San Francisco this weekend. He came on in relief in Friday's 11-4 loss, surrendering three more runs over two innings to bring his ERA to 6.36 over 63.2 frames on the season. He'll cede his spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster to right-hander John Curtiss, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Albuquerque. If Blach goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll likely remain in the Rockies organization as pitching depth at Albuquerque.

  • Rockies' Tanner Gordon: Serving as 27th man

The Rockies named Gordon as their 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Giants. He'll start Game 2 of the twin bill.

Gordon will temporarily join the Rockies' active roster to start the second game of a twin bill against the Giants, but he will likely be sent back down to Triple-A following the outing. Gordon has started two games for the Rockies this season, pitching to an 0-2 record with a 10.61 ERA across 9.1 innings.

  • Giants' Hayden Birdsong: Named 27th man

Birdsong has been appointed the Giants' 27th man for Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies. He'll start Game 2.

Birdsong will temporarily join the Giants' active roster to make his sixth big-league start of the year. Birdsong has a 2-0 record with a 3.55 ERA and 30:12 K:BB in 25.1 innings with San Francisco and will likely return to the minors after Saturday's start.

  • Adam Mazur P | MIA

Padres' Adam Mazur: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Mazur to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.

Mazur only lasted 2.2 innings during his start Friday against Baltimore, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks in the process. The Padres won't need to use a fifth starter for another two weeks, so they'll send down the struggling right-hander in favor of Alek Jacob, who will provide the bullpen with another fresh arm.
