  • Kyle Hendricks SP | LAA

Cubs' Kyle Hendricks: Lights-out in win

Hendricks (6-4) earned the win Friday after holding the Twins scoreless with 10 strikeouts across eight innings. He allowed three hits and one walk.

Hendricks whiffed a season-high 10 batters to help the Cubs win their fifth straight game. After tossing 104 pitches -- including 73 for strikes -- the right-hander fell just shy of recording his fifth career shutout and second of the season. Hendricks now sports a 1.21 ERA in September and a 2.93 ERA overall across 11 starts. The 30-year-old will look to continue his success with a favorable matchup Wednesday at Pittsburgh.

  • Jacob deGrom SP | TEX

Mets' Jacob deGrom: Throws side session Friday

DeGrom (hamstring) threw a side session prior to Friday's game, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

The team received positive feedback about deGrom's latest throwing session. The right-hander left Wednesday's start with a right hamstring spasm, but it appears as though he's in line to be available for his next turn through the rotation Monday as long as he doesn't experience any setbacks.

  • Sixto Sanchez SP | MIA

Marlins' Sixto Sanchez: Struggles during matinee

Sanchez (3-2) allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over four innings as he was charged with the loss in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader against the Nationals.

Sanchez was incredibly efficient in his last start as he needed only 90 pitches to toss seven innings in another appearance during a doubleheader. He fared considerably worse Friday as he allowed two runs in the second inning and three runs in the fourth. As a result, he picked up his second loss of the season. The right-hander now carries a 2.75 ERA and 31:7 K:BB over 36 innings during his first six major-league starts. He'll attempt to turn things around on the road Wednesday against Atlanta.

  • Jose Quintana SP | COL

    Cubs' Jose Quintana: Nearing return

Quintana (lat) will throw a simulated game Saturday and could return to game action soon, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

Quintana threw bullpen sessions Monday and Wednesday, and Saturday's simulated game could be one of his final hurdles prior to returning to the active roster. Manager David Ross said Friday that Quintana is "extremely close" to rejoining the team. The southpaw will likely work out of the bullpen upon his return.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Starting likely bullpen game

Wood will start what appears to be a bullpen game Friday against the Rockies, Eric Stephen of SBNation.com reports.

Wood is a starter by trade, though he's filled that role in just one of his six appearances so far this season. He's pitched out of the bullpen in all five of his outings since returning from a shoulder injury at the start of September and hasn't recorded more than four outs in any of them, so it would be a surprise to see him throw more than two innings in this one.

  • Aaron Nola SP | PHI

Phillies' Aaron Nola: Survives with no-decision

Nola did not factor in the decision against the Mets on Thursday, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing five runs on five hits and five walks while striking out seven.

Nola got off to a rough start in the outing, allowing three runs on a pair of walks and two hits in the first inning. He settled down until the sixth frame, when he surrendered a Pete Alonso solo home run and was tagged with another earned run after departing the contest. Due to an even less effective performance by opposing starter Seth Lugo, Nola managed to escape with a no-decision, though the five earned runs he allowed were his most this season. Despite the less-than-stellar outing, Nola stills holds a 2.92 ERA on the campaign, which he'll look to improve upon in his next scheduled start at Washington on Tuesday.

  • Seth Lugo SP | KC

Mets' Seth Lugo: Knocked around in short start

Lugo allowed six runs on eight hits and no walks in 1.2 innings against Philadelphia on Thursday, striking out three. He did not factor in the decision.

Lugo entered the contest having posted a laudable 2.65 ERA over 17 innings since joining the starting rotation Aug. 25, but he was unable to tame the Phillies' bats Thursday. The right-hander surrendered four home runs in the brutal outing, two of which came off the bat of Bryce Harper. In only 1.2 innings of work, Lugo yielded a season-worst eight hits and saw his season ERA balloon to 4.34. He'll try to rebound at home against Tampa Bay on Tuesday.

  • Austin Gomber SP | TEX

Cardinals' Austin Gomber: Takes loss Thursday

Gomber (0-1) was charged with the loss against Pittsburgh on Thursday, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.

Gomber was called upon when starter Dakota Hudson was forced to exit with elbow soreness after two innings. The unexpected early entry may have contributed to Gomber's first rough outing of the campaign; prior to yielding four runs Thursday, he had allowed only one earned run over 17.1 innings in 2020. It bears mentioning, however, that the southpaw has been flirting with danger all season, entering the game with a less-impressive 3.07 FIP due largely to a 15.1 percent walk rate. Indeed, the Pirates cashed in a pair of walks Thursday when Gregory Polanco torched Gomber for a three-run homer in the fourth inning. There has been some thought that Gomber could pick up a spot start down the stretch due to the Cardinals' remaining doubleheaders.

  • Julio Urias SP | LAD

    Dodgers' Julio Urias: Posts no-decision

Urias did not factor into the decision during Thursday's win over the Rockies, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out two across 5.1 innings.

Overall it was a solid performance for Urias at Coors Field. After giving up a pair of runs in the first inning, the southpaw settled into a steady groove, quieting Colorado's bats the rest of the way. Urias left the game with the score tied, 2-2, so he was not credited with the win. The 24-year-old will bring a 3.49 ERA and 1.20 WHIP into Wednesday's contest against Oakland.

  • Kyle Freeland SP | COL

Rockies' Kyle Freeland: Takes second loss

Freeland (2-2) was charged with the loss Thursday against the Dodgers after surrendering four runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out five across 6.1 innings.

Freeland turned in a decent outing against a volatile Dodgers lineup at Coors Field. The 27-year-old blanked Los Angeles until a difficult fourth inning, when he gave up a solo home run to Corey Seager and allowed another run to score after hitting Enrique Hernandez with a pitch. He was pulled with one out during a tied game in the seventh frame after serving up a double and a walk. Unfortunately, the bullpen allowed both of his baserunners to score, giving the Dodgers the lead for good. Freeland, who was coming off back-to-back quality starts, pitched into the seventh inning for the third time this season and threw 61 of 96 pitches for strikes. The southpaw will take a 3.75 ERA and 1.32 WHIP into Tuesday's matchup at San Francisco.
