  • Cardinals' Jake Woodford: Removed from roster

The Cardinals deactivated Woodford from their 28-man roster Wednesday ahead of the team's wild-card series with the Padres, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

St. Louis swapped out Woodford and Seth Elledge from the roster in exchange for Daniel Ponce de Leon and Andrew Knizner. Woodford made 12 appearances (one start) for the Cardinals during the regular season, posting a 5.57 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and a 16:5 K:BB in 21 innings.

  • Alex Wood RP | ATH

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Left off wild-card roster

Wood isn't included on the Dodgers' 28-man roster for their wild-card series with the Brewers that begins Wednesday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

After returning from a month-long absence due to a shoulder injury that he sustained in his season debut July 25, Wood moved into a relief role and struggled with the transition. Over his eight relief appearances, Wood posted a 5.59 ERA, 1.76 WHIP and 11:3 K:BB in 9.2 innings. He'll remain on standby with the Dodgers as a member of the taxi squad, but unless the team loses another pitcher to injury, Wood may not be added to the roster at any point during the postseason.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Out for wild-card round

The Padres excluded Clevinger (elbow) from their 28-man roster for the team's wild-card series with the Cardinals that begins Wednesday.

Clevinger's elbow apparently still proved bothersome during his most recent throwing session, so he'll remain sidelined for the three-game series along with fellow rotation member Dinelson Lamet (biceps). Both pitchers retain spots in the Padres' 40-man postseason roster pool, so Clevinger and Lamet could have the chance to pitch as soon as the divisional round if both make progress in their respective rehab programs.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Makes wild-card roster

Garrett made the roster for the NL Wild Card Series against the Cubs.

Garrett made his first two MLB starts this year. He gave up one run and struck out six in five innings to pick up the win in his first outing and gave up four earned runs in 2.2 innings in his second outing. The main takeaway is that Garrett's fastball could be a problem for him, as he averaged just 89.7 mph on that pitch. His curveball was as advertised, a plus hammer, but he will really need to locate his four-pitch mix to get by on that fastball velocity. He could be used as a long reliever or situational lefty in this series.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Return not imminent

Clevinger (elbow) is unlikely to pitch in the NL Wild Card Series, and perhaps the rest of the playoffs, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.

A Tuesday bullpen session didn't resolve questions about his short- and long-term health and significant concerns persist, per Passan. At this point, nobody should expect Clevinger to pitch in the playoffs this year, and it's possible this injury and potential treatment options could affect his availability for the 2021 season.

  • Reds' Anthony DeSclafani: Misses wild-card roster

DeSclafani did not make the Reds' roster for the NL Wild Card Series.

If he had made the roster, he would have only been used as a mop-up man out of the bullpen. DeSclafani has a 10.72 ERA and 2.25 WHIP over his last 22.2 innings.

  • Brewers' Brandon Woodruff: Starting Game 2 in LA

Woodruff will start Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Dodgers on Thursday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander delivered eight scoreless innings Saturday against the Cardinals, and he'll remain on schedule and pitch a pivotal Game 2 versus the Dodgers. Woodruff had a strong 2020 season with a 3.05 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 91:18 K:BB across 73.2 innings, and he'll look to carry that level of play into the postseason.

  • Chris Paddack RP | TEX

Padres' Chris Paddack: Starting playoff opener

Paddack will start Wednesday in Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Cardinals, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The 24-year-old previously wasn't guaranteed to be included on the roster since it's only a three-game series, but he'll end up starting the postseason opener with Dinelson Lamet (biceps) and Mike Clevinger (elbow) banged up. Paddack had his share of troubles this season with a 4.73 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 58:12 K:BB over 59 innings, and he surrendered five runs on three homers during his final regular-season start last week.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Throws bullpen Tuesday

Clevinger (elbow) threw a 23-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

After throwing an extended catch session Monday, Clevinger took the mound Tuesday and mixed all of his pitches during his bullpen session. His status for the postseason still hasn't been determined, but the Padres are "cautiously optimistic" that he could be available to pitch Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series if necessary.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

Padres' Mike Clevinger: Could pitch Game 3

Clevinger (elbow) could pitch Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

Clevinger is dealing with an elbow posterior impingement and received a cortisone shot Friday. The right-hander also threw an extended catch session Monday, and the Padres remain optimistic that he could pitch in the third game of the NL Wild Card Series if necessary.
