Garrett (9-7) took the loss in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks over four innings as the Marlins were routed 11-2. He struck out two.

Originally schedule to pitch Tuesday, the extra day of rest just seemed to throw Garrett off as he got tagged for more than three runs for the first time since July 21, on the backs of two-run homers by Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor. The southpaw got lifted after 77 pitches (46 strikes), perhaps with the intention of being available in some capacity for the final game of the season Oct. 1 should a wild-card spot still be on the line. Heading into Thursday, the Marlins are tied with the Cubs for the final playoff berth in the NL. Since the beginning of August, Garrett has a 2.85 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 39:12 K:BB through 53.2 innings and has been Miami's most consistent pitcher.

Corbin (10-15) took the loss Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks over 4.2 innings against the Orioles while striking out two.

Corbin was victimized by a two-run shot off the bat of Adley Rutschman in the bottom of the third, after the lefty walked Austin Hays to open the frame. The 34-year-old veteran's troubles would continue in the fifth inning, where he was once again charged with two runs, marking his second consecutive start with at least four runs allowed. Corbin has failed to make it through five innings in each of his last two outings and in three of his last five. He's also given up six home runs this month and has now lost four of his last five starts.

Smith-Shawver was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday.

Smith-Shawver will get a start Thursday against the Cubs as Atlanta goes for the sweep. The 20-year-old right-hander holds a 4.57 ERA and 1.25 WHIP through 21.2 innings in the big leagues. He could be sent back to the minors immediately after Thursday's outing.

Abbott (8-6) took the loss Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits over 2.1 innings against Cleveland. He struck out one and did not walk a batter.

Abbot ran into trouble early on after surrendering a leadoff double to Ramon Laureano to open the second. The lefty allowed five consecutive hits to start the frame and then gave up hits to two of the first three batters he faced in the third before being relieved by Daniel Duarte. Abbot has now failed to make it through five innings in four consecutive starts while his one strikeout Wednesday marked a season low. He's also lost his last three decisions and now holds a 6.10 ERA in September.

Davis (0-4) took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four batters over 4.1 innings.

Davis made it through two scoreless frames before giving up a solo homer to James Outman in the third. The right-hander entered the fifth inning in a tight 1-1 contest, but he allowed six of the seven batters he faced in that frame to reach base, with his only out coming on a sacrifice fly. All of that traffic led to three Los Angeles runs and the fourth defeat of the campaign for Davis. This was presumably his last appearance of the campaign, as he threw 86 pitches. If that's the case, Davis will finish with an 8.70 ERA, 1.93 WHIP and 26:15 K:BB over 30 innings in his first extended look in the majors.

Sheehan (4-1) earned the win over Colorado on Wednesday, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks while striking out 10 batters over six innings.

Sheehan induced 20 swinging strikes in the outing, taming the Coors Field disadvantage by keeping the Rockies from making consistent contact. The rookie hurler did serve up two home runs, but they were both of the solo variety and accounted for the only runs of the game against him. Sheehan turned heads with 102 punchouts over 63 frames in the minors this season, but he struck out just 30 batters over his initial 38.1 frames in the big leagues. He appears to have turned a corner in that regard, fanning 34 batters over his past 22 innings with Los Angeles, including 19 in 10.2 frames across his past two starts. Sheehan's late-season improvement has made him a consideration for the Dodgers' postseason roster -- if he makes it, he could function either as a fourth starter or as a piggyback or long-relief option.

Miley allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out two batters over five innings in a no-decision against St. Louis on Wednesday.

Miley yielded a run in the second frame but otherwise kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard in another strong outing. The left-hander has given up one or zero runs in three of his past four starts, posting a 2.21 ERA over 20.1 innings during that stretch. Miley's 14:8 K:BB during that period isn't very impressive, but he's pitching well enough to be a solid option should the Brewers need a fourth starter in the playoffs. The veteran hurler finished the regular season with a strong 3.14 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 79:38 K:BB over 120.1 frames.

Waldron allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Wednesday.

Waldron's six innings were a season high in the majors for the 27-year-old righty in what was likely his last outing of the year. He allowed two or fewer runs in five of his eight appearances (six starts). Waldron is at a 4.35 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB through 41.1 innings in the majors after posting a 7.31 ERA in 92.1 minor-league innings this season.

Oviedo did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings in a 7-6 loss to the Phillies. He struck out six.

Oviedo got off to a good start Wednesday, delivering three shutout innings before the Phillies tagged him for six runs across the fourth and fifth frames. Oviedo had allowed just one run over 11 innings in his previous two starts despite walking 10 in that span. The 25-year-old right-hander flashed some potential this season, though control issues have led to inconsistent results. Oviedo will finish the year 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 158:83 K:BB across 32 starts covering 177.2 innings.

Suarez did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out four.

The Pirates got off to a fast start against Suarez, scoring three runs in the first inning. The left-hander has allowed 10 runs over 11.1 innings in his final two outings, a rough finish to an otherwise solid campaign. Suarez will end the regular season with a 4-6 record, 4.18 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 119 strikeouts across 22 starts (125 innings).
