Giolito (8-8) was handed the loss by Kansas City on Wednesday as a result of allowing six runs on eight hits over four innings. He struck out two.

The Royals entered the game near the bottom of the league in both runs scored and long balls, but they got to Giolito early and often Wednesday. The right-hander surrendered a trio of homers and tossed 81 pitches before he was lifted after the fourth inning. The subpar outing was perhaps most surprising because Giolito came into the contest pitching very well, holding opponents to just five runs while posting a 27:8 K:BB over his previous four starts covering 26.1 innings. He'll look to bounce back in his next start, which is projected to take place at Minnesota early next week.

Allard (2-10) allowed two earned runs on six hits and no walks while striking out three across six innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Angels.

Allard had allowed no fewer than four runs in each of his last five outings, including surrendering a combined 13 earned runs across his last seven innings. He avoided another disastrous outing, limiting the Angels to a solo home run as the primary damage against him. Even so, Allard was charged with the loss for his eighth consecutive outing. He now owns a 5.07 ERA with a 73:18 K:BB across 81.2 frames on the campaign.

Kaprielian (shoulder) played catch before Wednesday's game and could make a start against the Rangers on Sunday, the Athletics' official site reports.

The right-hander has been in the process of overcoming an impingement in his throwing shoulder, and the fact he was able to engage in a throwing session Wednesday is certainly encouraging. If Kaprielian isn't able to take the hill Sunday, however, Daulton Jeffries is slated to slot in for his second major-league start of 2021.

Mize (6-6) allowed four runs on seven hits across five innings to take the loss Wednesday against the Red Sox. He walked one and struck out three.

Mize was sharp through four innings, with a J.D. Martinez solo shot his only blemish, but he struggled in the fifth. The 24-year-old allowed two more home runs in the frame, including a two-run shot by Enrique Hernandez. Mize has mostly done better at limiting home runs this season, as his HR/9 is down from 2.2 in 2020 to 1.5 so far in 2021, so perhaps this was just a minor hiccup against a tough lineup. Mize lines up to face a softer Baltimore lineup in his next scheduled start Tuesday. He pitched seven innings against the Orioles on Thursday without allowing an earned run.

Taillon allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings versus Baltimore on Wednesday. He did not factor in the decision.

Taillon turned in his fourth quality start in his last six appearances, although he emerged with a no-decision for the second time in that span. The right-hander missed out on the win as he exited with the game tied before the Yankees' offense rallied ahead in the bottom of the seventh inning. The 29-year-old continues to lower his ERA -- which is now 4.04 -- with a 1.22 WHIP and 108:32 K:BB through 107 innings this season. He's expected to make his next start on the road in Kansas City next week.

Montas allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out eight in six innings in a no-decision versus San Diego on Wednesday.

Despite a quality start, the right-hander left the game in position for the loss. He got off the hook when Oakland rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extras. Montas continues to be a strikeout machine, and it was encouraging to see him avoid issuing a walk for the first time since June 10. The 28-year-old owns a 4.10 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 140:33 K:BB through 125 innings. He lines up for a road start in Cleveland next week.

Gilbert (5-3) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks in five innings, striking out six and taking the loss in Wednesday's 4-3 defeat against the Rays.

The rookie required 86 pitches to get through five frames, which was pretty good considering the four free passes. Gilbert has certainly cooled down after his dominant stretch in early July, as he's allowed 10 earned runs in his last 13.1 innings. Regardless, the righty has shown tremendous promise in his debut season, posting a 4.14 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 67.1 innings. Gilbert is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday against the Rangers.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Gil will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Sunday against the Mariners, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

After throwing six shutout innings in his MLB debut Tuesday against the Orioles, Gil was optioned to Triple-A. Because he joined the roster as a replacement for a player placed on the COVID-19 injured list (Gerrit Cole), the rookie right-hander will be eligible to return to the Yankees before the usual 10-day minimum. If Gil can deliver another serviceable outing Sunday, he could have some staying power in a banged-up Yankees rotation that remains without Cole, Jordan Montgomery (COVID-19), Domingo German (shoulder), Corey Kluber (shoulder), Luis Severino (groin/elbow) and Michael King (finger).

Glasnow underwent successful Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Glasnow was initially hoping that he'd be able to return in 2021 after he suffered a partial UCL tear in mid-June, but he'll likely be sidelined until 2023 following Wednesday's procedure. Prior to his injury, the 27-year-old put up a 2.66 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 88 innings across 14 starts.

Keller (lower back) is slated to start Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

During his most recent start last weekend versus the Blue Jays, Keller gave up three runs over three innings before being pulled due to lower-back tightness. His early exit looks to have been precautionary, as he came out of his between-starts bullpen session without issue. Keller will carry a 7-10 record, 5.64 ERA and 1.68 WHIP into Saturday's outing.
