  • Luis Gil SP | NYY

Yankees' Luis Gil: Starting rehab assignment

Gil (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Low-A Tampa on Friday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.

It will be his first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery last May. While it's possible the Yankees could activate Gil later this month, the most important thing at this point is getting him built back up so he has a chance to contribute as a starter next season. The righty would seem to be a prime candidate for the Arizona Fall League and/or winter ball.

  • Yankees' Randy Vasquez: Summoned to majors

Vasquez was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.

Vasquez is part of the Yankees' roster expansion as the calendar flips to September. He looks to be ticketed primarily for relief work but is a candidate for some spot starts down the stretch.

  • Nathan Eovaldi SP | TEX

Rangers' Nathan Eovaldi: Throws light session

Eovaldi (forearm) threw a light bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Eovaldi was potentially on track to return from his forearm strain when rosters expanded, but he experienced tightness in his side following a bullpen session last week, delaying his activation from the IL. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday's session went well, and Eovaldi is scheduled to throw a "much heavier" session Friday.

  • Louie Varland RP | TOR

Twins' Louie Varland: Moves to bullpen at Triple-A

Varland has moved to the bullpen at Triple-A St. Paul as the Twins may consider him for a relief role in the majors in September, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

He gave up one run over four innings working out of the bullpen Thursday. It sounds like he'd be used as a long reliever if called up in September.

  • Clarke Schmidt SP | NYY

Yankees' Clarke Schmidt: Falls apart in fifth frame

Schmidt tossed 4.2 innings in a no-decision against Detroit on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven batters.

Schmidt was solid through four frames, holding the Tigers scoreless while yielding just two hits. The right-hander couldn't keep it going in the fifth, as Zack Short led off the inning with a solo shot and Detroit scored twice more before Schmidt was lifted with two outs. This was just the second time in his past nine starts that Schmidt has failed to complete five innings, and he now has a 4.56 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 133:38 K:BB over 134.1 frames on the season.

  • Matt Manning SP | PHI

Tigers' Matt Manning: Quiets Yankees in no-decision

Manning pitched six scoreless innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on Thursday, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Manning cruised through the six frames on 81 pitches, preventing New York from putting on more than one runner in any inning. He departed with a 3-0 lead but was deprived of a victory when Alex Lange gave up three runs in the ninth. Manning has been on quite a roll lately, tossing three straight quality starts and yielding one or zero earned runs in four straight outings. Over that stretch, he's posted a minuscule 0.38 ERA and 0.68 WHIP despite a weak 10:6 K:BB over 23.2 frames.

  • John Means SP | KC

Orioles' John Means: Looks ready to return

Means (elbow) threw five scoreless innings while allowing only one hit and two walks to go along with six strikeouts in a rehab outing with Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday, MILB.com reports.

Means was excellent in his fifth rehab outing and turned in his longest outing. He hasn't pitched in a big-league game since early April of 2022, so the Orioles have rightfully been hesitant to commit to him in a starting role upon his return. Regardless of his usage, Means looks poised to help the big-league club across the final month of the season.

  • Guardians' Peyton Battenfield: Pushed off 40-man roster

Battenfield was designated for assignment by the Guardians on Thursday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

Eric Haase has also been DFA'd as the Guardians clear out 40-man roster space following their waiver claims of Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Matt Moore. Battenfield, 26, carries a 5.19 ERA in 34.2 innings this season at the MLB level and a 5.66 ERA in 47.2 innings at Triple-A.

  • Mike Clevinger RP | PIT

White Sox's Mike Clevinger: Clears waivers

Clevinger cleared waivers and will remain with the White Sox, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.

Clevinger has pitched pretty well since returning from a biceps injury a month ago, but contenders still didn't view him as enough of an upgrade to justify adding his salary. The right-hander remains on track to start this weekend against the Tigers.

  • Wilmer Flores SP | DET

Tigers' Wilmer Flores: Kicks off rehab assignment

Flores (hamstring) began a rehab assignment with High-A West Michigan on Tuesday, striking out one over two scoreless innings while giving up two hits and no walks.

Flores' appearance for West Michigan was his first at any level since July 20 after he had been sidelined with a right hamstring strain. He remains on Double-A Erie's 7-day injured list but should be activated at some point in early September.
