Shuster (1-1) took the loss Thursday against Cleveland, allowing two runs on four hits and no walks across two innings. He struck out two.

Shuster drew his first start of the season Thursday. Considering he'd thrown three innings four times this season and had thrown only one-third of an inning since June 27, there was optimism he'd be able to go deeper into Thursday's game, but he made it only two innings before being yanked. It's unclear if he was on a pitch count or if his removal was due to a lackluster performance. Regardless, the 25-year-old should be expected to head back to the bullpen, especially with Mike Clevinger (elbow/neck) likely to return next week.

Doval allowed a hit and struck out two in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Thursday's 4-2 win over Atlanta.

Doval has converted his first two save chances in July after a tumultuous June that saw him produce two four-run blowups. He's allowed one run over his last seven innings, converting four of his five save chances in that span. Overall, he's 16-for-19 in saves with a 4.15 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 46:22 K:BB through 34.2 innings, though his status as the Giants' closer hasn't been threatened.

Neris tossed a scoreless inning of relief in Thursday's 10-2 win over the Phillies. He allowed one hit and struck out two.

After a rough patch in the middle of June, Neris has now strung together four straight scoreless appearances. That's allowed the veteran reliever to lower his season ERA to a more respectable 4.11. Neris logged a stellar 1.71 ERA across 68.1 innings last year for the Astros, so there is potential for continued improvement in 2024. The better play has also likely kept him locked into the closer role for the time being.

Baker (1-1) allowed three runs on a hit and two walks while striking out two over two-thirds of an inning, taking the loss Thursday versus the Mariners.

Baker loaded the bases in the seventh inning, and Keegan Akin couldn't prevent J.P. Crawford from unloading them with a three-run double. The Orioles didn't recover from that, sending Baker to his first loss of the season. The right-hander posted a five-inning scoreless streak upon his promotion from Triple-A Norfolk, but he's since given up seven runs over his last 5.2 innings. He's added three holds and an 8:3 K:BB this season, but he's unlikely to fill anything more than a middle-relief role.

Suarez allowed a walk during a scoreless inning of relief Thursday to pick up the save against the Rangers. He struck out one.

Suarez picked up the save for the second consecutive day, giving him 22 in 23 opportunities on the season. Suarez has not allowed a run in 32 of his 35 appearances, posting a season-long ERA of 1.02 with a 0.76 WHIP and 33 strikeouts over 35.1 innings.

Castro (shoulder) threw 17 pitches in an appearance with Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Castro will make another appearance Saturday, with the goal of throwing between 25 and 35 pitches. If that outing goes well, he could be activated for the start of Arizona's series against Atlanta on Monday.

Contreras (1-1) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while striking out one across 2.2 innings to take the loss versus the Athletics on Thursday.

Contreras lasted three frames in his previous start, also against Oakland, but he ran into trouble in the third frame Thursday. The right-hander has pitched to a 3.72 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 19.1 innings across 11 appearances with the Angels, though none of those outings have been longer than three innings. He's started his last two games since the Angels lack few in-house options for their rotation. Overall, he's at a 4.04 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 32:18 K:BB through 35.2 innings between the Angels and the Pirates this year. If he receives another start, it's projected to be at home versus the Rangers early next week.

Manager Pat Murphy said Thursday that Wilson will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Following the acquisition of Aaron Civale from Tampa Bay, Wilson will end up as the odd man out of Milwaukee's rotation. The 26-year-old owns a 4.27 ERA and 1.28 WHIP through 78 innings on the season, though his numbers drop to a 3.72 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in his 11 appearances as a reliever. He'll likely be asked to handle a multi-inning role as he moves to the Brewers' bullpen, and he could return to the rotation if another one of Milwaukee's starters gets injured.

The Diamondbacks recalled Jacques from Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

Since being claimed off waivers from Boston in April, Jacuqes has recorded a 4.58 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 17.2 innings with Reno. He'll now join the big-league roster to add some depth to Arizona's bullpen, and Cristian Mena will head back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Hoeing (hamstring) will be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Friday versus the White Sox, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Hoeing has been used as a starter plenty in the past but has been deployed exclusively in relief in 2024 aside from a one-inning "start" on his rehab assignment. The 27-year-old threw 49 pitches over 2.2 frames in his most recent rehab appearance, so the Miami bullpen will be needed Friday. It's unclear whether the Marlins intend to have Hoeing gradually build up his pitch count in his ensuing starts, or if he'll just be making a spot start Friday before moving to the bullpen.
