The Rays optioned Kuhnel to Triple-A Durham on Wednesday.

Kuhnel tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Cardinals and was unlikely to be available for another day or two, so he was an easy choice for the Rays to move off the active roster to clear room for right-hander Drew Rasmussen (elbow), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old right-hander will head back to Durham after making a pair of two-inning appearances in relief following his July 30 promotion.

Jimenez (oblique) fired a scoreless inning in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over Sacramento on Tuesday, allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts.

Jimenez got through his one frame on a tidy 12 pitches, eight of which he located for strikes. The right-hander may only need to make a couple more rehab appearances before being deemed ready for activation, especially if they go as smoothly as Tuesday's did.

Hoeing (2-2) earned the win over the Pirates on Tuesday, allowing one hit and issuing one walk while striking out three batters over 3.2 scoreless innings.

A lengthy rain delay resulted in Padres starter Dylan Cease being shut down after only one inning, and Hoeing was asked to step in to cover the bulk of the innings in Cease's place. The righty reliever performed well, giving up just a single and a walk while throwing 27 of 45 pitches for strikes over 3.2 scoreless frames. His performance earned him the victory as Pittsburgh was shut out by a combination of six Padres pitchers. Hoeing had a rough final outing of the first half, but he's bounced back with nine scoreless frames since the All-Star break. He's not used often in high-leverage situations but has been a versatile members of San Diego's pitching staff, making two starts and tossing three or more innings on six occasions overall. He's also had eight appearances of one inning or less and has recorded a 2.34 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB overall across 34.2 frames on the campaign.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell said Wednesday that Alzolay will undergo Tommy John surgery on his injured right elbow, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Prior reports had suggested that Alzolay would need some type of procedure on his pitching arm, and Counsell revealed that the right-hander would need a full UCL reconstruction. While no timetable for Alzolay's return has been established, there's a good chance he won't be ready to pitch in the majors again until 2026.

The Athletics designated Reyes for assignment Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Reyes was up with the big club for a week, allowing three runs (two earned) over four innings covering three relief appearances. The 31-year-old is likely to clear waivers and stick around in the organization as bullpen depth at Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Athletics activated Miller (finger) from the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Miller is back after a minimum 15-day absence as a result of a fractured left pinkie finger. He did not make a rehab appearance but completed a live batting practice session Monday to convince the Athletics he was ready to go. Miller should immediately regain his closer role for Oakland.

The Cubs reinstated Thompson (rib) from the 15-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Iowa, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Thompson had been on the shelf since late June with a right rib fracture but is back to full health after making four rehab appearances. The Cubs don't have a spot in the bullpen available for Thompson at the moment, but the right-hander should rank near the top of the list for a call-up if the club needs a fresh relief arm at any point.

The Diamondbacks recalled Castellanos from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, Alex Weiner of ArizonaSports.com reports.

Castellanos was just optioned to Reno on Tuesday but is back to serve as the 27th man during Wednesday's doubleheader in Cleveland. He will likely be sent back down again following Wednesday's twin bill.

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Tuesday that Holmes will remain in the rotation as the club's No. 5 starter in the wake of Reynaldo Lopez (forearm) landing on the injured list, Lindsay Crosby of AthlonSports.com reports.

Though Lopez hadn't pitched since July 28, Atlanta had been holding out hope for a little over a week that the right-hander would avoid a stint on the IL before he was finally deactivated Monday. Holmes had already made starts in his last two appearances while Max Fried (forearm) was on the shelf, and though Fried has since been activated, Lopez's absence will extend Holmes' run in the rotation. Since receiving his first MLB call-up in mid-June, Holmes has compiled a 3.00 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 33:6 K:BB in 33 innings over 12 appearances. Despite his quality numbers between the bullpen and rotation, Holmes doesn't profile as an appealing streaming option for his next start, which is expected to fall this weekend against the Rockies at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

Urena is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Astros at Globe Life Field.

He'll be making his second straight turn through the rotation, despite being tagged for seven earned runs in four innings in a loss to the Red Sox his last time out Friday. Texas will have a spot in the rotation available for as long as both Jon Gray (groin) and Max Scherzer (shoulder) are on the shelf, but another poor showing Wednesday could nonetheless put Urena at risk of being moved to the bullpen, if not cast off the roster. Long relievers Cody Bradford and Dane Dunning loom as alternatives for the No. 5 spot if Urena can't get the job done.
