  • Giants' Dereck Rodriguez: Dealing with Grade 1 hamstring strain

Rodriguez was diagnosed with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain following an MRI on Friday afternoon. Manager Bruce Bochy said that he won't resume running until next week, Jeff Wallner of MLB.com reports.

This will likely sideline Rodriguez for a few weeks, ruling him out for the rest of August at the very least. It's unclear when Rodriguez suffered this injury, as his latest start against Pittsburgh on Sunday was another in a string of impressive performances. Across five starts since the All-Star break, he's logged five quality starts, a 1.35 ERA and a 0.66 WHIP with 28 strikeouts in 33.1 innings. He was officially placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday.

  • Trey Wingenter RP | CHC

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Plays catch Friday

Wingenter (back) was able to play catch Friday after getting hit by a line drive during Thursday's game, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

There has yet to be word as to whether Wingenter will be available out of the bullpen, but it's likely that manager Andy Green would've tried to refrain from using him anyways after the right-hander recorded four outs Thursday. Consider him day-to-day moving forward.

  • Kenley Jansen RP | DET

Dodgers' Kenley Jansen: Throws off mound

Jansen (irregular heartbeat) threw off the mound Friday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

Jansen was expected to be out for a month when he was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 10. The fact that he's resumed throwing indicates that he could be ahead of that timeline, but his timetable won't become clear until after Monday's cardiologist visit.

  • Phillies' Seranthony Dominguez: Shuts door for 14th save

Dominguez picked up his 14th save of the year in the nightcap of Thursday's doubleheader against the Mets, recording the final two outs on a pair of strikeouts while allowing one hit.

Dominguez was called upon with one out in the ninth inning and the tying run on deck in a four-run game. He allowed that tying run to come up to bat after giving up a single to Wilmer Flores, but he struck out Austin Jackson and Jose Bautista to close the game. It was a significant moment for the young reliever, who was able to shut the door after throwing 1.1 innings the day before despite struggling in similar situations for much of the year.

  • Trey Wingenter RP | CHC

Padres' Trey Wingenter: Exits after getting hit with liner

Wingenter was removed from Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks after being struck in the back by a liner in the top of the sixth inning, the Associated Press reports.

With Padres starting pitcher Jacob Nix failing to escape the first inning after surrendering five runs, the team needed five relievers to finish out the game. One of those summoned from the bullpen was Wingenter, who struck out the side in the fifth before coming back out for another inning. He retired the first batter of the frame before A.J. Pollock sent one back up the middle off the pitcher's back. The right-hander is considered day-to-day and will presumably be re-evaluated prior to Friday's game.

  • Hector Neris RP | HOU

Phillies' Hector Neris: Strikes out side

Neris struck out the side in a perfect sixth inning during the Phillies' 24-4 loss to the Mets in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader.

Neris was brought back to Philadelphia on Tuesday and has had a pair of strong outings, facing a combined five batters and retiring them all, with four strikeouts and a flyout. He had posted an ugly 6.90 ERA in 30 innings earlier in the season with the Phillies but recorded a strong 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, so he may well have corrected whatever flaw was causing his earlier struggles. He has the pedigree of a former closer, with 38 career saves, and it's not impossible that he could work his way back into a high-leverage role should he continue to impress.

  • John Brebbia RP | COL

Cardinals' John Brebbia: Rehab assignment on tap

Brebbia (forearm) was "super pleased" with a Wednesday bullpen session and expects to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Memphis over the weekend, Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com reports.

The right-handed reliever was just placed on the disabled list last Friday with his forearm issue, but it appears he's headed for a quick recovery. Brebbia may only need one minor-league rehab appearance before being deemed ready for activation.

  • Mark Leiter RP | ATH

Phillies' Mark Leiter: Sent back to Triple-A

Leiter was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Thursday.

After coming up for Thursday's twin bill against the Mets, Leiter will head back to the minors. Leiter had an odd stat line in his lone inning of work Thursday, getting tagged for seven runs but none of them were earned. He now owns a 5.40 ERA at the big league level this season and will likely be back with the Phillies once rosters expand.

  • Giants' Dereck Rodriguez: Lands on DL with hamstring strain

Rodriguez (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day disabled list Thursday, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The timing of this injury is particularly unfortunate as Rodriguez had truly begun to find his groove on the mound, notching 18 strikeouts over 21 innings in his last three starts while allowing just two earned runs (0.86 ERA) and 12 baserunners (0.57 WHIP) in that span. Rodriguez was due to start Friday, but now Casey Kelly will make the spot start. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, Rodriguez suffered the injury during the Giants' recent kerfuffle with the Dodgers.

  • Carl Edwards RP | DET

Cubs' Carl Edwards Jr.: Tosses clean inning for 17th hold

Edwards pitched a perfect eighth inning in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Pirates to record his 17th hold of the season.

Edwards followed strong performances by Jon Lester and Steve Cishek with an effective inning of his own, as he got three Pittsburgh hitters to ground out on just 13 pitches. The 26-year-old righty now has a 2.50 ERA this season to go along with the 17 holds and 56 strikeouts in 39.2 innings.
