  • Will Smith RP | KC

Braves' Will Smith: Notches first save in matinee

Smith allowed one run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout during the seventh inning to earn the save during Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader at Washington.

The left-hander struggled with his command and threw only 11 of 21 pitches for strikes as he gave up a run in his second straight appearance. Smith has surrendered two runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks across two innings through his first two outings of the season.

  • Brent Suter RP | LAA

Brewers' Brent Suter: Tosses three scoreless frames

Suter threw three scoreless innings of relief in Tuesday's victory over the Cubs.

Suter gave up three hits and an earned run in his first appearance of the season, but he did not allow even one base knock Tuesday and issued only one walk. Suter is not in a particularly fantasy-friendly role, but he does generally go more than one inning at a time, which boosts his chances of picking up wins in relief.

  • Will Smith RP | KC

Braves' Will Smith: Takes loss Tuesday

Smith (0-1) failed to record an out and took the loss Tuesday, giving up one run on two hits and a hit by pitch in the ninth inning as Atlanta fell 6-5 to the Nationals.

Entering a tie game in the bottom of the ninth, Smith gave up a leadoff single to Victor Robles on his first pitch and plunked Trea Turner with his fourth, setting the stage for a Juan Soto walkoff single. The Atlanta closer looked very good in his first outing this season, however, and Smith's high-leverage role is in no jeopardy after only one shaky appearance, especially with Chris Martin dealing with numbness in his fingers.

  • Jacob Webb RP | CHC

Braves' Jacob Webb: Joins big club for twin bill

Atlanta recalled Webb from its taxi squad ahead of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Nationals.

He'll be designated as the 27th man for the twin bill, meaning he'll likely be removed from the active roster following the pair of games. Though Webb failed to win a spot on Atlanta's Opening Day roster, he's been effective through parts of two seasons in the big leagues, posting a 1.06 ERA across 42.1 career innings.

  • Mark Melancon RP | ARI

Padres' Mark Melancon: Picks up third save

Melancon secured his third save of the season Tuesday against the Giants, pitching a scoreless ninth while striking out one.

Melancon continued his dominant start to the 2021 season by picking up his third save in six games. The 36-year-old righty has solidified his spot as the team's closer by pitching three shutout innings while striking out two and allowing just one hit.

  • Chris Devenski RP | PIT

Diamondbacks' Chris Devenski: Blows save Tuesday

Devenski was called upon to convert a save chance Tuesday against the Rockies but instead gave up a game-tying homer to Sam Hilliard.

Devenski was able to retire the first two batters before the homer, and he might still get the next chance with Joakim Soria going on the IL. Yoan Lopez also blew a lead in the 10th inning, Stefan Crichton was used in the seventh inning, and Kevin Ginkel was unavailable due to an illness.

  • Kevin Ginkel RP | ARI

Diamondbacks' Kevin Ginkel: Unavailable due to illness

Manager Torey Lovullo said after Tuesday's 13-inning win over the Rockies that Ginkel was "feeling under the weather" and wasn't available out of the bullpen, Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports.

Both Chris Devenski and Yoan Lopez blew save opportunities Tuesday night, leading to rookie Matt Peacock making his debut and pitching three innings to finish the game. We still don't have an official closer for the Diamondbacks and might not for a while with Joakim Soria on the IL.

  • Dinelson Lamet RP | LAD

Padres' Dinelson Lamet: Ramping up at alternate site

Lamet (elbow) threw 36 pitches in a game at the Padres' alternate site Saturday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Lamet continues to build up slowly after getting into a pair of contests late in spring training. The right-hander's 36 pitches and three innings Saturday were each his most since being shut down near the end of last season, but he likely still has some time to go before he's ready to pitch in a big-league game. Per Cassavell, Lamet could make his return to the big club in early May.

  • Austin Adams RP | BOS

Padres' Austin Adams: Working way back at alternate site

Adams (elbow) has been pitching at the Padres' alternate training site, but his return date remains undetermined, AJ Cassvell of MLB.com reports.

Adams was shut down with what has been described as a minor elbow issue in early March and was placed on the 10-day injured list near the end of spring training. He's eligible to come off the IL this Thursday, but there's no guarantee that he'll be activated immediately despite the fact that he has been throwing at the team's alternate site. "We don't [want] to send somebody back before they're ready -- either health or to their standards of being able to get Major League hitters out," manager Jayce Tingler stated when discussing Adams and fellow recovering reliever Pierce Johnson (groin).

  • Pierce Johnson RP | CIN

Padres' Pierce Johnson: Pitching at alternate site

Johnson (groin) has pitched in games at the Padres' alternate training site, but it's unclear if he'll come off the injured list for this weekend's series in Texas, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Johnson was diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain in mid-March and has been working his way back since. Though he's now participating in games at the alternate site, he may not be ready to return when eligible this Thursday. "We don't [want] to send somebody back before they're ready -- either health or to their standards of being able to get Major League hitters out," manager Jayce Tingler stated when discussing Johnson and fellow injured reliever Austin Adams (elbow).
