  • Rangers' Nick Martinez: Undergoes sports hernia surgery

Martinez underwent surgery Monday to repair a sports hernia, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.

At this point in time, it's expected that Martinez will be in full health once spring training arrives. During the 2017 season, Martinez posted an unimpressive 5.66 ERA and 1.37 WHIP over 23 games (111.1 innings). He's expected to be in the mix for one of the final spots in the Texas rotation to begin 2018.

  • Tigers' Mark Montgomery: Inks minor-league deal with Tigers

Montgomery has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Tigers that includes an invitation to spring training, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Montgomery spent all of 2017 with Triple-A Memphis, compiling a 2.43 ERA and 73:15 K:BB across 66.2 innings. Shoulder injuries halted his progress a few years ago, but the now-healthy 27-year-old is looking to prove he has what it takes to be a big-league reliever. He owns a career 2.35 ERA with 449 strikeouts across seven minor-league seasons (352.1 innings).

  • Adam Kolarek RP | LAA

Rays' Adam Kolarek: Re-signs with Rays

Kolarek agreed to a minor-league deal with Tampa Bay on Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Kolarek appeared in 12 big-league games for the Rays this past season, allowing six earned runs off nine hits and four walks while striking out four in 8.1 innings of relief work. The 28-year-old spent most of the season in Triple-A Durham, where he posted a 1.65 ERA and 46:16 K:BB in 41 games, and will likely begin the 2018 season back with the Bulls.

  • Luis Santos RP | TOR

Blue Jays' Luis Santos: Outrighted from 40-man roster

Santos was outrighted from the 40-man roster Monday, Mike Wilner of Sportsnet 590 The Fan reports.

For the first time in his career, the 26-year-old Santos threw in the majors during the 2017 season. He pitched 16.2 innings over 10 games and posted a 2.70 ERA to go with a 1.14 WHIP. However, it's entirely justified to wonder whether or not such a performance is sustainable for Santos. Between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo in 2017, Santos appeared in 28 games (114.2 innings) and owned a collective ERA and WHIP of 4.16 and 1.26, respectively.

  • Nick Rumbelow RP | SEA

Yankees' Nick Rumbelow: Added to 40-man roster

Rumbelow was added to the 40-man roster Monday, Brendan Kuty of NJ.com reports.

Rumbelow split the 2017 season between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He threw 29 innings across 17 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Over said games he posted a shining 0.62 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. After missing almost the entire 2016 campaign due to Tommy John surgery, Rumbelow will aim to build upon his recent performance during the upcoming season and reappear in the majors for the first time since 2015.

  • Zach Putnam RP | BOS

White Sox's Zach Putnam: Reinstated from disabled list Thursday

Putnam (elbow) was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list Thursday.

This is strictly a housekeeping move for the White Sox, as Putnam will likely miss most, if not all, of the 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in late June. Prior to his injury, the reliever posted a 1.04 ERA and 0.35 WHIP in 8.2 innings with the big-league team this past year.

  • Jeff Ferrell RP | DET

Tigers' Jeff Ferrell: Outrighted to Triple-A

Ferrell was removed from the major-league roster Thursday.

Ferrell was outrighted by the Tigers after spending the last two months of the 2017 season with the club. During that time, he appeared in 11 games out of the bullpen, accumulating a 6.75 ERA and 2.36 WHIP in 9.1 innings.

  • Williams Jerez RP | BOS

Red Sox's Williams Jerez: Joins major-league roster

Jerez was added to the club's 40-man roster Thursday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Jerez finished the 2017 season in Triple-A Pawtucket after spending most of the year with Double-A Portland. During his brief time at the highest minor-league level, he accumulated a 3.75 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over 12 innings. Looking ahead, Jerez will try to break into the big leagues for the first time in his career come spring.

  • Red Sox's Craig Kimbrel: Boston exercises 2018 option

Kimbrel will stay with the Red Sox in 2018 after the club picked up his $13 million option Thursday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

The closer will remain in Boston for at least another year after posting a 1.43 ERA and 0.68 WHIP over 69 innings in the 2017 regular season. Chris Sale's option was also picked up by the team Thursday, as the Red Sox begin preparing for the 2018 campaign.

  • Cesar Valdez RP | LAA

Blue Jays' Cesar Valdez: Outrighted off 40-man

Valdez (shoulder) was outrighted off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster Wednesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports.

Valdez -- who hadn't pitched in the majors since 2010 prior to this season -- struggled in his return to the bigs, compiling an unsightly 7.63 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 30.2 innings split between the A's and Blue Jays. His success has never really translated to the major-league level, so there's a good chance he starts out in the minors next season.
