  • Austin Pruitt RP | TEX

Rays' Austin Pruitt: Suffers second loss Wednesday

Pruitt (1-2) allowed two earned runs on four hits over one inning in a 2-1 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday. He also recorded a strikeout.

The right-hander was charged with preserving a 1-0 lead to open the bottom of the eighth, but he couldn't seal the deal after starting the inning with a swinging strikeout of Avisail Garcia. After allowing a Jose Abreu single, Pruitt then surrendered a 419-foot two-run shot to Matt Davidson that ended up representing the winning runs. The 28-year-old has had quite a rollercoaster of a start to his season, allowing eight runs (seven earned) over two appearances while generating scoreless efforts in his other pair of trips to the mound.

  • Jose Alvarado RP | PHI

Rays' Jose Alvarado: Grabs third hold Wednesday

Alvarado notched his third hold by firing a scoreless inning in a 2-1 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing a walk while recording two strikeouts.

Alvarado threw 20 pitches overall in a rather laborious inning, but he still managed to grab his third hold of the season with his fifth straight scoreless outing. The 22-year-old southpaw has already proven to be an effective setup option in the early going, and both his handedness and high-90s fastball should continue to afford him plenty of work over the course of the season.

  • Athletics' Daniel Mengden: Gets first win Wednesday

Mengden (1-2) picked up the win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five-plus innings while striking out five.

The right-hander got pulled from the game after the first two batters reached base in the sixth inning, but by that point the A's had a 9-2 lead and were on their way to a 16-6 rout, so Mengden's first win of the year was never in serious jeopardy. His 6.19 ERA through three starts looks ugly, but it's a product of an elevated BABIP -- he's allowed only one homer through 16 innings -- and his 12:2 K:BB is solid. Mengden will next take the mound Monday at home against the White Sox.

  • Matt Moore RP | BOS

Rangers' Matt Moore: Takes loss Wednesday

Moore (0-3) took the loss against the Angels on Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings while striking out two.

The left-hander threw 57 of 96 pitches for strikes, and Wednesday's outing was actually his longest so far on the season. Moore's 8.76 ERA and 9:7 K:BB in 12.1 innings were not what the Rangers were hoping for when they acquired him, but he'll get a chance to turn things around Tuesday on the road against the Rays.

  • Brian Johnson RP | BOS

Red Sox's Brian Johnson: Strikes out three in relief Wednesday

Johnson tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief in Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Yankees, allowing one hit and striking out three.

David Price pitched only one inning Wednesday before leaving due to a "sensation" in his left hand, forcing the Red Sox to use six relievers on the night. Johnson was the most successful of the bunch, throwing 19 of 28 pitches for strikes, and while Price may not miss his next start, Johnson would be the likely candidate to replace him for Monday's home start against the Orioles should Boston decide to exercise further caution.

  • Joe Kelly RP | LAD

Red Sox's Joe Kelly: Ejected from Wednesday's loss

Kelly was ejected in the seventh inning of Wednesday's 10-7 loss to the Yankees after hitting Tyler Austin with a pitch that precipitated a bench-cleaning brawl.

Austin slid into second base spikes high on Brock Holt back in the third inning, and Kelly took it upon himself to send the Yankee a message in response, just missing him with an 0-1 pitch before drilling him in the hip with a 98 mph fastball two pitches later. Expect Kelly to face additional league discipline after the incident.

  • Tommy Kahnle RP | BOS

Yankees' Tommy Kahnle: Gets ejected Wednesday

Kahnle was ejected from Wednesday's 10-7 win over the Red Sox after getting involved in a bench-clearing brawl in the seventh inning.

The right-hander never pitched in the game but was still one of two Yankees tossed as a result of the scrum, along with primary instigator Tyler Austin. Kahnle's been struggling to begin the year, posting a 7.11 ERA and 7:7 K:BB in 6.1 innings, so some frustration may have boiled over for him. It remains to be seen whether he'll face any additional discipline from the league.

  • Edwin Diaz RP | LAD

Mariners' Edwin Diaz: Picks up fourth save Wednesday

Diaz notched his fourth save of the season after striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday against the Royals.

It took Diaz 17 pitches -- 12 of which were strikes -- to slam the door on the Royals. The electric 24-year-old continues to shine early in 2018; he's now a perfect 4-for-4 in save opportunities while keeping a shiny 12:0 K:BB through five scoreless innings.

  • Jaime Barria RP | CLE

Angels' Jaime Barria: Back to minors after win

Barria was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake following Wednesday's win over the Rangers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

Barria was solid in his big-league debut, allowing just one run on one hit and three walks through five innings en route to picking up the victory. He struck out three batters while the only run he allowed was a solo homer from Ryan Rua in the third inning. Still, he'll head back to the minors to clear a roster spot for Nick Tropeano, who is expected to be recalled from Triple-A to start Thursday's series opener against the Royals. Barria's strong showing should assure he's one of the team's top candidates for future spot starts.

  • Daniel Norris RP | CLE

Tigers' Daniel Norris: Takes loss in relief Wednesday

Norris (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against the Indians after giving up four earned runs on seven hits and a walk across three innings of work. He struck out three.

Norris came on in the first inning after Detroit starter Jordan Zimmermann took a comebacker to the face and had to leave the game. The lefty looked good in his first outing of the season but he was very hittable in this one. If Zimmermann misses any starts, Norris would be a likely candidate to take his place in the rotation. He's a risk to the ratios in either role.
