Kay was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday against the Orioles due to back pain, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports.

It's unclear when Kay picked up the issue; he tested it out prior to Tuesday's game but the Blue Jays decided to play it safe with the 24-year-old lefty. With less than a week left in the season, it's not yet known whether Kay will appear again. In a trio of outings since being called up from the minors, Kay posted a 5.79 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 13:5 K:BB in 14 innings. The Blue Jays have yet to announce who will start in his place Tuesday.

Pagan was credited with his seventh hold in a win over the Red Sox on Monday, opening the ninth inning but retiring just one hitter and allowing two hits before being pulled.

Pagan was in line for his 21st save when he entered the game with the Rays holding a 7-4 lead. However, the right-hander allowed singles to Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts to open the frame, and although he was able to get J.D. Martinez to foul out, manager Kevin Cash opted to bring in Colin Poche to slam the door. Except for a hiccup against the Red Sox in the opener of the four-game series last Friday, Pagan has been solid in September, collecting four saves, one win and Monday's hold while generating a 2.61 ERA across 10.1 innings.

Pruitt (3-0) was credited with the victory in a win over the Red Sox on Monday despite allowing two earned runs on three hits and two walks over one inning. He struck out one.

Pruitt was far from sharp, painting himself into a corner after retiring the first two batters in the fourth inning. The right-hander ultimately allowed five consecutive hitters to reach safely and surrendered RBI singles to Rafael Devers and J.D. Martinez, but he became the pitcher of record when the Rays popped off for six runs in the home half of the frame and then hung on the rest of the way. Pruitt has allowed a total of 10 earned runs across his last six appearances overall, though six of those came in one game back on Aug. 24.

Poche struck out two with no walks through a scoreless and hitless two-thirds of an inning to record his second save against the Red Sox on Monday.

Poche was called upon with one out in the ninth inning with two inherited runners and a three-run lead. Poche made quick work of the Red Sox, striking out the next two hitters to nail down his second save. Emilio Pagan was used to start the ninth inning, but he was pulled after allowing two singles. The 25-year-old has a 4.96 ERA with 69 strikeouts through 49 innings this season.

Jurado will follow an opener (Edinson Volquez) Tuesday against Boston.

Jurado has worked both as a true starter and as a primary relief pitcher this season, but he hasn't had much success overall. In 119.1 innings, he's recorded a 5.73 ERA while striking out just 15.2 percent of opposing batters.

Manager Bob Melvin confirmed Sunday that Puk will remain in the bullpen for the final week of the regular season, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The towering southpaw has gotten his big-league career off to a strong start in a relief capacity, generating a 3.48 ERA and 10:4 K:BB across 10.1 innings over nine appearances. Although he profiles as a starter in terms of his future in the majors, for the time being, Puk offers Melvin a valued left-handed power option that can work multiple innings out of the bullpen as necessary.

Adams, who is scheduled to undergo surgery in the near future to address a torn ACL and meniscus damage in his left knee, isn't expected to be ready to pitch for the Mariners until June at the earliest, Shannon Drayer of 710 ESPN Seattle reports.

Adams is expected to face a 6-to-8-month rehab and recovery period once the surgery is performed, but the Mariners are apparently planning to proceed cautiously with the right-handed reliever and keep him on the shelf beyond that projected timeline. Though Adams finished his first season with the Mariners with a 3.77 ERA in 29 appearances, his 15.1 K/9 rate was the fourth-best mark in baseball among all pitchers who covered at least 30 innings. He'll likely be ticketed for a high-leverage role out of the bullpen next summer once he's healthy again.

Thornton didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's 8-3 loss to the Yankees after working five innings and giving up four runs on five hits while striking out three.

Working as the Blue Jays' primary pitcher, Thornton entered the contest in the bottom of the second and was taken the hook for the loss with opener Wilmer Font put Toronto in a 4-0 hole after one inning. Thornton had previously shined in his previous two turns as a primary pitcher with a 11:2 K:BB and one run allowed in 10 innings, but the two-run homer he allowed to DJ LeMahieu prevented the right-hander from maintaining momentum. He'll look to end the season on the high note while likely making his final turn through the rotation next weekend versus Tampa Bay.

Santiago is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Indians.

With Dylan Covey (shoulder) recently getting shut down, Santiago will slot back into the rotation for the final week of the season and pick up his first start since Aug. 17. Santiago covered 3.2 innings and 90 pitches in his most recent relief appearance Sept. 15, so he should be decently stretched out as he transitions back to starting duty. The veteran southpaw will tentatively line up for two starts this week, with his second turn set to come in the season finale Sunday versus the Tigers.

Lopez (4-9) allowed seven runs on eight hits with one walk and zero strikeouts across 2.1 innings while taking a loss against the Twins on Sunday.

The 26-year-old took a loss in a quality start during his last outing, but there wasn't much quality in his appearance Sunday. Lopez tied a season high with eight hits allowed and didn't record a strikeout for the first time since throwing only one-third of an inning on July 29. He is 4-9 with a 6.35 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 106 strikeouts in 117.2 innings this season. Lopez will end the season with another appearance against the Twins at home Sunday.
