    Gomes will start at catcher and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Reds.

    With Willson Contreras (ankle) landing on the injured list Tuesday, Gomes looks poised to serve as Chicago's No. 1 backstop for at least the next week. Gomes will pick up his fifth start in six games Wednesday after going 4-for-16 with a double, a stolen base and a run over the previous four contests.

    Maldonado isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Rangers.

    Maldonado was back in action over the last two games and went 1-for-5 with an RBI, a walk and a strikeout. Christian Vazquez will take over behind the dish and bat eighth Wednesday.

  • Cubs' Willson Contreras: Sent in for MRI

    Contreras is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his injured left ankle Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

    The Cubs placed Contreras on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, but the extent of his left ankle injury isn't yet known. The MRI should shed more light on the matter, and once the results are available, the Cubs will have a better idea regarding whether he'll be able to return from the IL when first eligible Sept. 13. Yan Gomes is expected to serve as the Cubs' No. 1 catcher in the interim.

    Rangers' Jonah Heim: Still not starting

    Heim isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Astros.

    Heim went 0-for-7 with an RBI and two strikeouts over his last two games and will head to the bench for a second consecutive matchup. Sam Huff is starting at catcher and batting seventh.

    Marlins' Nick Fortes: Returns to bench

    Fortes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.

    Fortes started in each of the past three games at either catcher or designated hitter, going 2-for-9 with three walks and a run. Jacob Stallings is getting the nod behind the plate Wednesday, while Avisail Garcia handles DH duties.

    Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Gets Wednesday off

    Ruiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game agains the Cardinals.

    Riley Adams checks in behind the plate while Ruiz gets a well-deserved rest after catching each of the past five games. Ruiz produced six hits and two walks over the first four of those starts before an 0-for-4 showing in Tuesday's 4-1 loss.

    McGuire isn't in the lineup Wednesday against the Rays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

    McGuire went 1-for-2 with a run and a walk Tuesday against Tampa Bay but will head to the bench for the third time in the last four games. Connor Wong is starting at catcher and batting ninth.

    Giants' Joey Bart: Not in Wednesday's lineup

    Bart isn't starting Wednesday against the Dodgers, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

    Bart returned to the lineup Tuesday and went 1-for-3 with two strikeouts. He'll head to the bench a day later while Austin Wynns starts behind the dish and bats eighth.

    Contreras isn't starting Wednesday against the Athletics.

    Contreras went 0-for-2 with a run, an RBI, two walks and a strikeout Tuesday but will head to the bench for the fourth time in the last six games. Ronald Acuna is serving as the designated hitter and leading off.

    Angels' Max Stassi: Riding pine Wednesday

    Stassi isn't starting Wednesday against the Tigers, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports.

    Stassi started the last two games and went 1-for-6 with an RBI. Matt Thaiss will take over behind the dish and bat eighth Wednesday.
