The Cardinals will select Prieto's contract from Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

He slashed .241/.289/.364 in 273 plate appearances this season before the injury. Maximo Acosta was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move.

Vargas exited Thursday's game against the Yankees due to left wrist contusion.

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado: Getting shoulder checked out
Manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday that Arenado will return to St. Louis in the coming days to have his injured right shoulder examined by team doctors so that the Cardinals can map out a potential rehab assignment for him, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Ryan McMahon 3B | NYY
Yankees' Ryan McMahon: Hits first home homer as Yankee
McMahon went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run against Washington in an 11-2 win Wednesday.
On a day when New York hit six long balls as a team, McMahon got in on the action with a three-run blast in the third inning. It was just the second homer McMahon has hit across 28 contests since being dealt to the Yankees on July 25, and this was his first one at home. The veteran third baseman hasn't done much with the bat since the trade, as he's posted a .649 OPS with a 32.0 percent strikeout rate during that 28-game stretch, though he's walked at a healthy 12.0 percent rate.

Josh Jung 3B | TEX
Rangers' Josh Jung: Extends hit streak to five
Jung went 3-for-6 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 20-3 win over the Angels.
Jung was about fifth on the list of offensive stars in the game, but the Rangers understand how important it is for the third baseman to get his groove back. A wrist injury that derailed him in 2024 has been followed by a season-long slump in 2025, when he was demoted to the minors for a stretch in July. Wednesday was his sixth straight start after getting a four-game breather last week to reset. The three-hit performance extended a hit streak to five games, during which Jung has gone 9-for-23 (.391) with a home run, a double and four RBI.

Matt Chapman 3B | SF
Giants' Matt Chapman: Tallies three hits, two RBI in win
Chapman went 3-for-4 with a home run, two total runs and two total RBI in Wednesday's 12-3 rout of the Cubs.
Chapman and Rafael Devers combined for seven of San Francisco's 13 hits, with the former collecting three of those knocks. Among the third baseman's hits was a run-scoring single in the fifth inning and a solo homer to left field in the seventh. Chapman is still batting a poor 11-for-51 (.216 average) through 15 games in August, but he may be starting to perk up at the plate -- over his past three games, he's gone 5-for-11 with three extra-base hits (two home runs and a double).
