Phillies' Cody Asche: Could start season on DL

Asche (oblique) could start the season on the DL, Ryan Lawrence of The Philly Voice reports.

An MRI Wednesday revealed a Grade 1 right oblique strain, forcing him to take a step back from his rehab work. Manager Pete Mackanin said it was a day-to-day thing, but acknowledged that Asche is not able to participate in any hitting activities. Following an injury to Aaron Altherr that will keep him out four-to-six months, Asche has a chance to earn some playing time in the outfield, although while he deals with this injury Tyler Goeddel appears to be the favorite to earn those at-bats in the early going.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

Diamondbacks' Jean Segura: Scratched due to knee soreness

Segura was scratched from Wednesday's lineup due to knee soreness and is expected to miss Thursday's game as well, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

Manager David Hale said the issue is not serious, as the young shortstop apparently just slid on some hard dirt Tuesday and is still sore from it. He'll take a couple days off to heal, but should be good going forward as long as he doesn't aggravate the injury down the road.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

    Diamondbacks' Jean Segura: Scratched Wednesday

Segura was scratched from Wednesday's lineup, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

The team has not yet provided a reason for the move, but an update figures to come in short order. Consider Segura day-to-day until the D-Backs say otherwise.

  • Cody Asche 3B | NYM

Phillies' Cody Asche: Opportunity for increased playing time

Asche (oblique) has a chance to earn more playing time with Aaron Altherr set to miss 4-to-6 months with a wrist injury, the PhillyVoice reports.

Asche will need to get healthy first. He has been sidelined with an oblique injury since the start of camp. He hit .245/.294/.395 with 12 home runs in 425 at-bats last season. He could produce similar numbers this year if he comes away with a significant share of the playing time in left field. He is competing with Tyler Goeddel, Darnell Sweeney, David Lough and Cedric Hunter for at-bats.

  • Yadiel Rivera 3B | MIL

Brewers' Yadiel Rivera: Has three extra-base hits in four games

Rivera is 4-for-9 with three extra-base hits through the Brewers' first four spring games.

Rivera has gotten off to an excellent start to spring training between his two home runs and positional versatility around the infield. He's competing for a spot on the Brewers bench as a utility infielder, and he'll have a good chance of garnering that spot if he can keep this torrid pace going throughout spring training.

  • Carlos Asuaje 3B | LAD

Padres' Carlos Asuaje: Reassigned to minor league camp

Asuaje was reassigned to the Padres' minor league camp Monday, Bill Center of Padres.com reports.

Asuaje was acquired from Boston as part of the Craig Kimbrel trade and hit .251/.334/.374 with eight home runs and 61 RBI in Double-A last season. He will likely spend 2016 in the minor leagues.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

Diamondbacks' Jean Segura: Homers out of leadoff spot

Segura connected for a solo home run on Friday and is 5-for-6 this spring, the Arizona Republic reports.

Segura batted leadoff again and said he feels "comfortable" in that spot. Obviously its early, but Segura could be valuable if he returns to form in Arizona's potent lineup. Segura batted just .257 and .246 the last two years, with 11 combined home runs and 44 total stolen bases. But he batted .294 with 12 home runs and 44 steals in 2013, a year he made the All-Star Game.

  • Cody Asche 3B | NYM

Phillies' Cody Asche: Hopes to return to action next week

Asche (oblique) said he hopes to be playing in games by the middle of next week, CSN Philadelphia reports.

Asche did also say a return next week is not a certainty. He's been sidelined with an oblique strain since the start of camp. If this injury lingers into the season it could create an opportunity for Darnell Sweeney or David Lough to open the season on the Phillies' active roster.

  • Cody Asche 3B | NYM

Phillies' Cody Asche: Still sidelined with oblique injury

Asche (oblique) participated in running drills and took dry swings with a bat Thursday, the PhillyVoice reports.

Manager Pete Mackanin said Asche is "coming along slowly" in his recovery from an oblique strain. He has yet to play in a spring training game because of the injury.

  • Jean Segura 3B | CLE

Diamondbacks' Jean Segura: Could play every day if he can handle second base

Segura could play "almost every day" if he can handle playing second base per Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale, Jack Magruder of Fanragsports.com reports.

With Nick Ahmed flashing gold glove level defensive ability last year, Segura's best chance at playing time will be at second base. Segura certainly has the arm and range for the position, as he has been a solid shortstop, but sometimes the differences in double play turns and other second base specific plays can trip up an otherwise talented middle infielder. Segura will get his first game action at the position for the Diamondbacks on Friday.
