Indians' Andres Gimenez: Riding pine Wednesday

Gimenez isn't starting Wednesday's game against Kansas City.

Gimenez started each of the last two games and went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBI. Owen Miller will take his place at the keystone and bat seventh.

  • Elvis Andrus 2B | ARI

Athletics' Elvis Andrus: Undergoes two procedures

Andrus (lower leg) underwent surgery Wednesday to address a fractured left fibula and to repair a sprain of the the upper ankle.

Andrus' season came to an end over the weekend when he suffered the injury against the Astros, and there wasn't much of a delay before going under the knife. The 33-year-old remains under contract with Oakland next season and is expected to be healthy in time for spring training. He slashed .243/.294/.320 with three homers, 25 doubles, 37 RBI, 60 runs and 12 stolen bases in 146 games during 2021.

  • Jahmai Jones 2B | DET

Orioles' Jahmai Jones: Not starting Wednesday

Jones isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Red Sox.

Jones has gone 0-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts across his last three appearances, and he'll be on the bench for the third time in the last five games. Pat Valaika will shift to second base while Richie Martin starts at shortstop.

  • Blue Jays' Santiago Espinal: Retains top third base job

Espinal will start at third base and bat eighth Wednesday against the Yankees.

Since being reinstated from the 10-day injured list last weekend, Espinal has started at third base in each of the past four games, going 3-for-13 with two runs. Espinal looks like he'll remain atop the depth chart to close out the regular season, even with Cavan Biggio returning from the IL on Tuesday. Biggio will be on the bench for the second game in a row.

  • Andy Ibanez 2B | NYM

Rangers' Andy Ibanez: Posts three-hit night

Ibanez went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Angels.

Ibanez ripped a single up the middle with the bases loaded in the second to score two runs and even the game at 2-2. He later would hit his second triple of the year in the seventh and eventually come around to score to give the Rangers a 5-2 lead. The 28-year-old was in a nice groove at the plate towards the end of August before suffering a strained hamstring, but he appears to have picked up right where he left off with five multi-hit performances over nine games since returning from the injured list Sept. 18. Ibanez is slashing .418/.459/.646 with three homers, 10 RBI, 11 runs scored and a 6:14 BB:K over his last 21 games while drawing at least one start at five different positions.

  • Jose Altuve 2B | HOU

Astros' Jose Altuve: Knocks 31st homer

Altuve went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Tuesday in a 4-3 win over the Rays.

The second baseman came through in the clutch in the eighth inning, swatting a solo shot to left field to tie the score 2-2. The long ball was his fourth in his past 10 games, and seven of his 10 hits overall during that stretch have gone for extra bases. Altuve's 31 homers on the campaign are tied for his single-season career high, which he established during the 2019 season.

  • Luis Arraez 2B | SF

    Twins' Luis Arraez: Resting Tuesday

Arraez is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Tigers.

The infielder will get a rest Tuesday after starting five of the last seven contests and batting .200 with two RBI over that stretch. Josh Donaldson gets the start at third base as Miguel Sano will be the designated-hitter and Willians Astudillo enters the lineup at first base, batting seventh.

  • Cavan Biggio RF | HOU

Blue Jays' Cavan Biggio: Not starting Tuesday

Biggio will be on the bench Tuesday against the Yankees.

Biggio missed almost all of August and September while battling elbow, back and neck issues, but he's ready to go for the final week of the season. It's unclear how often he'll be in the starting lineup, but the fact that it's Santiago Espinal who will get the nod at third base even with righty Jameson Taillon taking the hill for Yankees could be significant.

  • Rangers' Yonny Hernandez: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Hernandez is not starting Tuesday against the Angels.

He'll move to the bench after going 0-for-6 with a strikeout and three walks while starting the final two games of the weekend series in Baltimore. Charlie Culberson will man third base against lefty Packy Naughton on Tuesday.

  • Red Sox's Christian Arroyo: Sitting against lefty

Arroyo is not starting Tuesday against the Orioles, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports.

Arroyo appears to be behind Jose Iglesias on the depth chart, as he's out of the lineup again Tuesday despite appearing to have a favorable matchup with lefty Bruce Zimmermann taking the mound for Baltimore. With Iglesias being ineligible for the postseason roster, however, Boston will likely look to get Arroyo a start or two later this week in order to get him back into the flow of things. The infielder has had just four at-bats since returning from the COVID-19 IL last Wednesday.
