Garrett Cooper 1B | ATL
Padres' Garrett Cooper: On bench Tuesday
Cooper is absent from the lineup Tuesday versus the Phillies.
Matt Carpenter will start at first base and bat seventh for the Padres as they take on right-hander Michael Lorenzen. Acquired from the Marlins just before the Aug. 1 trade deadline, Cooper is slashing .271/.333/.429 with two homers and 10 RBI in 24 games (78 plate appearances) so far with San Diego.

Michael Toglia 1B | COL
Rockies' Michael Toglia: Optioned to Triple-A
Colorado optioned Toglia to Triple-A Albuquerque on Tuesday.
Toglia showed some promising flashes down the stretch in 2022, but the 25-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder has slashed just .163/.224/.284 in 45 games (152 plate appearances) this season at the major-league level. Cole Tucker is being summoned from Albuquerque in a corresponding move.

Anthony Rizzo 1B | NYY
Yankees' Anthony Rizzo: Won't return in 2023
Manager Aaron Boone said Tuesday that Rizzo (concussion) will be shut down for the rest of the 2023 season, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
The veteran first baseman continues to make cognitive improvements but won't be rushed back to game action this year with the Yankees eight games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League. Rizzo faced live pitching in late August for the first time since he landed on the injured list Aug. 3 with post-concussion syndrome, and he should continue working through his rehab program even though he won't be back in the lineup in 2023. The 34-year-old is under contract for 2024 at $17 million and will have around six more months to prepare for the start of spring training.

Dominic Smith 1B | ATL
Nationals' Dominic Smith: On bench against lefty
Smith is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Mets.
Joey Meneses will start at first base and Riley Adams is serving as the Nationals' designated hitter with left-hander Jose Quintana taking the mound for New York. Smith had a productive weekend series against the Marlins but carries a rough .579 OPS in 160 plate appearances versus lefties this year.

Matt Beaty 1B | KC
Royals' Matt Beaty: Sits against righty
Beaty is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the White Sox.
The lefty-hitting Beaty is on the bench for the third straight game, with two of those absences having come against right-handed starting pitchers. Beaty had a brief run as a strong-side platoon player at first base to close out August, but the Royals appear to have instead opted for a committee approach to the position.

Ty France 1B | SD
Mariners' Ty France: Singles, scores in return to action
France (elbow) went 1-for-4 with a run in a loss to the Reds on Monday.
France was able to draw the start at first base after a day off Sunday to rest his sore elbow following a hit-by-pitch Saturday. The veteran didn't appear any worse for wear from his MLB-high 29th plunking of the season, but his extra-base-hit drought continued -- France last reached safely with anything more than a single 12 games ago via a double Aug. 21 against the White Sox.

Alec Bohm 3B | PHI
Phillies' Alec Bohm: Knocks in three runs Monday
Bohm went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI in a 9-7 win over San Diego on Monday.
Bohm gave the Phillies an early lead with his three-run double in the first inning. He finished with three base knocks, more than he had tallied over his previous four games combined. Bohm has already reached career-best marks this season with 86 RBI and 16 homers while putting up a .282/.338/.442 slash line, 67 runs and four steals over 515 plate appearances.

Triston Casas 1B | BOS
Red Sox's Triston Casas: Drives in four runs
Casas went 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored in Monday's win over Tampa Bay.
Casas put the Red Sox on top with his three-run shot in the sixth inning and later added an RBI single. After a bit of a cold spell for most of August, his bat is getting hot again. Over his last 10 games, Casas has gone 15-for-34 (.441) with three homers, 10 RBI and a 6:7 BB:K. For the season, his slash line is up to .268/.368/.503 with 45 extra-base hits and 59 RBI through 123 games.
-
Ryan O'Hearn 1B | PIT
Orioles' Ryan O'Hearn: Sits against lefty
O'Hearn is not in Monday's lineup against the Angels.
O'Hearn is hitting .316 with one home run, five runs and nine RBI over his last 10 games. As is typically the case, he'll hit the bench with lefty Kenny Rosenberg starting for the Angels.

Rowdy Tellez 1B | ATL
Brewers' Rowdy Tellez: Sitting against righty
Tellez is not in Monday's lineup against the Pirates.
Tellez typically sits against lefties, as he did Sunday against Ranger Suarez and the Phillies, but now he's taking a seat for the second game in a row against a righty (Luis Ortiz) -- he also sat Saturday against Aaron Nola. Carlos Santana will start at first base while William Contreras starts at designated hitter.
