Yankees' Chris Gittens: Takes part in fielding drills

Gittens (ankle) was spotted performing fielding drills at first base Thursday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.

The workout marks the first known baseball activity Gittens has performed on the field since he was placed on the 10-day injured list July 25 with a sprained left ankle. Gittens is without a clear timeline for a return, but once activated, he'll most likely be optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees acquired Anthony Rizzo from the Cubs last week to take over as their everyday first baseman, while the player Gittens had been replacing, Luke Voit (knee), is on the track to beat him back from the IL.

  • Kole Calhoun 1B | CLE

Diamondbacks' Kole Calhoun: Not starting Thursday

Calhoun is on the bench for Thursday's game against the Giants.

Sporting a .190 average and .547 OPS against left-handed pitching this season, Calhoun takes a seat with southpaw Alex Wood starting for the Giants. Pavin Smith is playing right field and batting fifth.

  • Diamondbacks' Asdrubal Cabrera: On bench Thursday

Cabrera is not starting Thursday's game against the Giants.

Cabrera has been a steady contributor of late, hitting .313 with five extra-base hits, nine RBI and seven walks in his last 10 games. Drew Ellis plays third base and bats sixth Thursday.

  • C.J. Cron 1B | BOS

Rockies' C.J. Cron: Day off Thursday

Cron isn't starting Thursday's game against the Cubs, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain reports.

Cron was productive across the first two games of the series against the Cubs, as he went 4-for-8 with three RBI, a run and a walk. He'll get a breather for the series finale while Connor Joe starts at first base and bats fifth.

  • Donovan Solano 1B | TEX

Giants' Donovan Solano: Clubs fifth homer

Solano went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and a two-RBI single in Thursday's 7-1 win over Arizona.

The 33-year-old started the scoring in the fourth inning with his second homer in the last five games. He knocked in another pair of runs with his sixth-inning single. Solano's playing time could be in decline soon, but he's doing everything possible to make that a tough decision for manager Gabe Kapler. In his last seven games, Solano is 12-for-28 (.429) with two homers, three doubles, six RBI and four runs scored. Tommy La Stella, who returned from the injured list Wednesday, will likely compete with Solano for playing time at second base going forward, which could see the latter drop into a short-side platoon role.

  • Andrew Vaughn 1B | MIL

White Sox's Andrew Vaughn: Logs multiple hits in loss

Vaughn started in left field and went 2-for-2 with a walk in Wednesday's 9-1 loss to the Royals.

Vaughn has been playing left field while Eloy Jimenez, who returned from a groin injury Tuesday, works his way back from the injury. This was the 20th multi-hit game this season for Vaughn, who is slashing .343/.389/.588 with six home runs, 16 RBI and 18 runs scored over the last 30 contests.

  • Drew Ellis 1B | PHI

Diamondbacks' Drew Ellis: Gets chance at third base

Ellis started at third base Wednesday and went 0-for-4 in a 7-1 loss to the Giants.

The Eduardo Escobar trade created an opportunity for Ellis, who has started three of the last four games at the hot corner. The 25-year-old had a hit in his first major league at-bat -- a pinch-hit single -- but he's gone hitless over the next 13 plate appearances.

  • Rhys Hoskins 1B | CLE

Phillies' Rhys Hoskins: Socks 24th homer

Hoskins went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBI in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the Nationals.

He took Paolo Espino deep in the fifth inning for a two-run shot and what proved to be the game-winning hit. Hoskins has been productive since the All-Star break despite a minor groin injury, slashing .271/.426/.646 through 16 games with four of his 24 homers on the year.

  • Ryan O'Hearn RF | PIT

Royals' Ryan O'Hearn: Belts homer, drives in three

O'Hearn went 1-for-2 with a home run, a walk and three RBI in a victory over the White Sox on Wednesday.

Serving as the Royals' designated hitter, O'Hearn drove in the first run of the game with a sac fly in the first inning. He then went deep to center field in the seventh to extend the team's lead to 8-1. The three RBI tied a season high for the 28-year-old. He is hitting .226 on the season while carrying a problematic 32.9 percent strikeout rate over 155 at-bats.

  • Jose Abreu 1B | HOU

White Sox's Jose Abreu: Goes deep in loss

Abreu went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's loss to the Royals.

The White Sox fell into an early 6-0 deficit behind starter Lucas Giolito before Abreu provided a small glimmer of hope with a fourth-inning solo shot to center field. The long ball was his first since he went deep in back-to-back games July 19 and 20. Since that time, Abreu is slashing just .122/.280/.195 with one extra-base hit and 11 strikeouts over 12 games.
