  San Diego acquired Mize and infielder Gage Workman from Detroit on Monday in exchange for left-handers Kash Mayfield and Jackson Wolf, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Mize is the second addition of the day to the Padres' starting rotation, after the team acquired Robbie Ray from the Giants earlier Monday. The 29-year-old Mize has posted career-best numbers this season, registering a 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 85:19 K:BB in 86.2 innings. Mize is on an expiring deal and will look to aid the Padres' playoff push and finish the season on a high note with the hope of securing a lucrative payday in free agency.

The right-hander left the mound with Detroit nursing a 2-1 lead, but his bullpen couldn't get the job done. The quality start was still Mize's eighth of the season and third in his last five outings, a stretch in which he's produced a 2.20 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 27:5 K:BB over 28.2 innings. If the Tigers do decide to sell at the trade deadline, Mize could be in high demand as a rental, as he becomes a free agent this coming offseason. If he doesn't get shipped out before then, his next start is set to come on the road next weekend against the A's.

  Mize is dealing with groin tightness and a wrist injury following his early departure from Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Angels, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Mize left the game in the fourth inning after being struck in the left hand/wrist by a ground ball off the bat of Jo Adell, and he is also dealing with an apparent groin issue. The 29-year-old is expected to undergo additional testing on the groin, but Mize described his removal from Sunday's contest as precautionary. The right-handed pitcher is tentatively set to toe the rubber next at home against the Royals on Friday, and it's unclear if he's in danger of missing that outing.

  Mize exited Sunday's start against the Angels in fourth inning after being struck in the left hand by a comebacker, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Mize entered the bottom of the fourth inning having tossed three innings of one-run ball before he took a 108.8 mph ground ball from Jo Adell off his glove hand to open the frame. The right-hander was able to finish the play, throwing out Adell at first base, but Mize was then forced to exit the game. He was already up to 74 pitches on the day, and it's possible that his removal was simply precautionary. More information on the status of Mize moving forward will likely come in the near future.
