Some players record fast 40-yard dash times but don't necessarily show that speed on tape. Watkins was not one of those players. He tied Jalen Royals for the most (nine) career touchdowns of 50+ yards. His 4.37 speed definitely showed up. Watkins had 254 yards and five touchdowns vs. Arkansas and another 180 yards and two touchdowns vs. Duke. Almost more impressive is that he somehow only totaled 906 yards and nine touchdowns with those two games included. A fifth-year breakout with overall underwhelming data, Watkins feels clearly outclassed by San Francisco's already-existing speedster: a Round 4 pick from the 2024 draft, Jacob Cowing. Watkins is not worth drafting outside of the deepest leagues.

49ers' Jordan Watkins: Has high-ankle sprain
Rotowire
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Watkins is nursing a high-ankle sprain and will be out roughly one month, Vic Tafur of The Athletic reports.
Watkins suffered the injury during the 49ers' 30-9 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com, in which he corralled three of six targets for 56 yards. The timing of the rookie fourth-round pick's injury is discouraging, as he appeared to be putting together real momentum early in training camp and injuries elsewhere in San Francisco's wide receiver corps had opened up real opportunities. His status now looks uncertain for Week 1 against the Seahawks on Sunday, Sept. 7.

49ers' Jordan Watkins: Paces pass catchers in defeat
Rotowire
Watkins brought in three of six targets for 56 yards in the 49ers' 30-9 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
The rookie fifth-round pick took advantage of his first game-based opportunity to make his case for a roster spot, recording teams highs in receptions, receiving yards and targets. His numbers were primarily the result of a 50-yard grab on the 49ers' third play from scrimmage, an impressive contested catch down the left side of the field against Ja'Quan McMillian. Watkins, who finished his college career at Mississippi with a 49-906-9 line across 12 games in 2024, is currently slotted fairly deep down the depth chart, but he'll give the coaching staff something to think about if he can continue thriving in San Francisco's second preseason game next Saturday afternoon on the road against the Raiders.

49ers' Jordan Watkins: Could be third or fourth WR?
Rotowire
Watkins is in the mix to be third or fourth on San Francisco's WR depth chart to start the season, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.
The fourth-round pick reportedly carried his momentum from a strong offseason program into the first week of training camp, although Watkins and 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan both said the rookie has made his fair share of mistakes. There's an opportunity for first-team reps this summer, with Brandon Aiyuk (ACL), Jauan Jennings (calf) and Jacob Cowing (hamstring) all missing practice time. Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) also has missed practices, but he was activated from the active/PUP list Sunday.
